As an online learner aiming to be a professional in the field of Social Science (Psychology), I have learned the following:
a) The skills and attributes I need in order to be successful are a strong curiosity about the how’s and why’s of human behaviour since psychology is the science of the mind and behaviour (Medical News Today, 2015). Communicating clearly in order to describe findings and observations made as a student or as a practicing professional would be one of the most important skills to develop.
Improving my research and writing skills would be one of the ways I succeed. A high level of interpersonal skills in order to build a rapport with diverse groups of people would also be critical in the field of psychology and successfully studying online. I would need a strong desire to help people, and establishing trust is one of the ways that would be necessary to effectively help people in this role. Having compassion and patience, and being able to cope with high pressure situations would help me assist in establishing a healthy relationship with my fellow students and/or clients.
b) Learning online is different because there is no direct physical contact with either fellow students or teachers. This could prove a challenge for those who lack motivation to regularly attend to readings and activities. Even setting aside the time to read the materials required and complete assignments is not the most effective or engaging learning technique as is discussed in the

Pick two to three competencies from the listing for which you feel you are currently strong, and describe why you feel that way.
Everyone has a different employability and transferable skill but I possess the following employability skills;
In today’s society, so many people are continuing their education beyond high school. We realize that in order to make a decent living, a degree is most likely a requirement. In some cases even a bachelor’s degree is not enough to qualify for many positions. Nevertheless, thanks to technology, we now have the option to learn online or in a traditional classroom setting. There are very few differences between the two, and students need to understand that as much time and energy will need to be devoted to the online courses as on a campus. “A 2010 meta-analysis and review of online-learning studies concluded that online learning was as good as or slightly more effective than traditional face-to-face instruction” (Mendenhall, 2011).
The Internet has dramatically changed the world today as much as the Industrial Revolution changed the world two centuries ago. It revolutionized many fields such as education. Many educational institutions offer online courses providing time, distance, and place advantages for learners who work full time or live miles away from their schools. Rachel Farhi, an editor of The Daily Cougar, in her article “Online education innovators should be wary,” states that distance learning classes give students from disadvantaged areas opportunities to learn knowledge through reducing the cost. On the other hand, online courses bring some disadvantages, such as no social interaction, academic dishonesty, and procrastination. David Smith, an editor of The Daily Nebraskan, in his article “Reliance on online materials hinders learning potential for students,” claims that web-based learning cannot be a substitute for on-campus classes because e-learning decreases students’ learning pressure and motivation. Once students have less pressure to study, their academic performance may be negatively influenced. It is more likely that online education decreases students’ learning effectiveness and quality, even though it provides convenience and cost efficiency for them. After reading the two articles, I do not think that online education is as good as traditional education. Smith is absolutely right that online education is not as effective as regular classroom
There are no facts supporting the statement that “you cannot learn as much online as in a classroom”. Everyone has their own needs for learning some people do better online in the privacy of their home where there are not any distractions, and some people need have face to face interaction in order to learn. Some people who are in online classes may learn more than those who are in a classroom. No matter what you choose the learning part is up to you and how committed you are to furthering your education.
My two best success profilr skills are self-esteem, and interpersonal awareness. From the time of November 5th to May the 16th my self-esteem increased twenty-two points. A way I improved my self-esteem was just by not letting people’s words bother me. From November the 5th to May the 16th my interpersonal-awareness increased by ten points. I have the ability to take into account of others' reactions to adjust tactics and
Communication skills – you must be able to listen and then report back your finding and conclusions to your audience
Upon embarking on new pathways of understanding and learning, it is very important that I maintain the strength of faith and trust that this is exactly what and where God has designed for me to be. Perspective and experience play a big part of this because as an online student there are certain areas of uncomfortability and uncertainty that are faced such as the total dependence on technology and being completely in control of the speed at which the information is absorbed. While I have confidence and determination to put forth my best effort to succeed and achieve the ultimate goal of acquiring my academic aspirations, I realize that I still have personal distractions to discipline and manage.
The topic I have chosen to focus on for my final project is Online Learning vs Traditional Learning
Applying the knowledge I have learned throughout my coursework will allow me to continue to grow and advance in my career. Continuing to keep up with current research and scientific journals will allow me to stay current and reliable. Just as Chapter 1 of “Writing for the Behavioral and Social Sciences” states “The scientific journal is the repository of the accumulated knowledge of a field” (APA Manual, 6th edition). Using such resources will be beneficial in helping to find answers to questions or even to gain more knowledge about the world of psychology. Becoming a practitioner-scholar in the field of psychology will allow me to face difficult circumstances head on and search for productive solutions. It is important as a psychology major and soon a BCBA to be able to recognize problems and understand how to handle unexpected
According to Barbara Means, the study’s lead author and an educational psychologist at SRI International, online education ultimate goal, is to provide learning experiences that are more tailored to individual students than is possible in classrooms. That enables more “learning by doing,” which many students find more engaging and useful.
Education has undergone significant changes because of the development of information and communication technology over the 21st century (Lin & Jou, 2012:2). As a convenient and inexpensive way to gain knowledge while pursuing higher education, online learning, a form of training or teaching that takes place over the Internet, has been considered as an alternative to traditional classroom learning (Zhang et al, 2004). This essay will argue that even though online learning has benefit such as flexibility which could outweigh traditional learning, traditional classroom learning might still not be entirely replaced. This essay will discuss positive and negative aspects of online and traditional learning in terms of four criteria:
Learning is more than just receiving information. Traditionally learning was to be in campus, where students would interact with one a another, there were no other ways for learners to get educated beside going to the classroom and listening to the instructor. Nowadays the Internet has brought different ways for people to receive information, such as getting education and degrees online. A few years ago online education was never thinkable, and yet it has become to reality and it is widely expanding with popularity. Online education is a type of educational instruction that delivers learning to individuals to their own homes, and it is getting very popular among nontraditional student and others. Individuals prefer online education
Psychology is always changing. We use it in our everyday life, even if we don’t think or mean to, and ever since I started studying it I notice that I use it too. Instead of passively doing something without thinking I would step back and use the theories I learned about and apply them to real life. Of course you don’t just suddenly learn Psychology and become this perfect person who makes no mistakes. You take those mistakes and over time learn from them. For example, I was struggling last semester toward finals week and my Psychology professor taught us a unit on stress. She gave us helpful tips on how to juggle our stress that not only helped during finals but whenever I had a big assignment or even some big life event.
