Frontline followed the guideline of identifying their sources throughout “The Silence.” Frontline identifies the main narrator who is also the reporter on the story at the beginning of the documentary as Mark Trahant. Mark gives background information about him like how he is a journalist, and he wrote about Native Americans for most of his career. Another example of how Frontline identified their sources is the victims would recount their pasts as children being abused while their name would appear on the screen. They identified the priests by showing an old picture of them on-screen, and the narrator introduced them verbally. Frontline also stated background information on the priests. For example, Father Endal was a pioneer priest and traveled
"Older men declare war. But it is the youth that must fight and die"- Herbert Hoover. The leaders who decide to start the war do not have to fight, but the people who do not want to fight, like nineteen year old Paul and his friends, are the ones who are killed and injured. In the book All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque, Paul changes physically and emotionally through war. Set in Germany during World War I, Paul and his friends must do the unthinkable to survive the war and it causes them to slowly lose their identity. Paul is changed by the harsh effects of the war through his dehumanization, rapid personal growth, and alienation from the rest of the world.
numerous examples of symbolism and literary devices are expressed. Remarque uses symbolism and literary devices to show that the horrors of World War I turned its soldiers into animals, forced them to stand face to face against death, and led their fates to be determined by chance.
In All Quiet on the Western Front Paul witness all the horrors of war. He sees death crawling towards the wounded soldiers in the wood, hospital, and on the front. When a soldier was wounded it killed them, they lost a limb or they got sent back to the front. Another awful part of war is soldiers would get shot and stranded out in the woods. They would yell for help, but were never found. Mental wounds were another injury of war. Paul would see people go insane on the front and some soldiers got shellshock. The worst part of the war for Paul was watching all of his comrades die, and his connection with the ones he loved at home fade away. The horrors of war is clearly represented in both Battle Scars and All Quiet on the Western Front with physical wounds, mental wounds, and loss of loved ones.
The horrors of the war is by far the most horrifying event that the world has to go through. The soldiers that take part in war suffer irreversible damage because of the tragedies they have seen and beared. The worst things about war is the severity of deaths that are bestowed on mankind, the majority of soldiers that have nothing to go home to after the war, and the physical and mental harm that can occur after war. During the war people are victims and witnesses of broken limbs, blood oozing mouths, and lifeless bodies. All Quiet on the Western Front portrays the war as it was experienced, replacing the fantasy of glory, and heroism with a picture of fear and massacre. For example, in chapter one Paul reflects on the story of Joseph Behm,
The violent nature of war destroys everything about humanity, both physically and psychologically. There is no escape anywhere. By the light of the shells, I try to get a view of the fields. They are a surging sea, daggers of flame from the explosions reach up like fountains. It is impossible for anyone to break through it" (66).
Remarque is successfully creating an anti-war argument in the book, All Quiet on the Western Front.
‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ by Erich Maria Remarque follows the voyage of the protagonist and narrator, Paul Baumer, who is a nineteen year old man fighting for the German army in the front lines in World War I. Baumer joins the war voluntarily with a group of friends after repeatedly listening to the patriotic speeches from their teacher. When the men first join they are innocent and young, but as the novel progresses they become old men in a young man’s body. Throughout the novel each character dramatically changes and loses their identity in different ways
In today's society, people of color have been conditioned to suppress and deny any form of racism. This sort of silence perpetuates oppression and racism by letting it happen over and over again. People of color are not always aware of this oppression because they are not informed about it; it is not as obvious or evident to them. From the moment they are born, they are both advertently and inadvertently told to ignore and deny any forms of racist acts they or their people may endure by those in positions of power. Men and women of color are being taught to be silent and disregard these actions in many institutions, including schools.
The rain poured heavily and the guys and I were trembling with fright. As I sat down in the tanks, listening to the harsh noises being produced by the enemies. Mud floors, foggy conditions and the horrid smell filled the place. How can I possibly avoid all of these? The commander and the rest of the ground forces were still behind, getting ready for war.
In Clint Smith’s article, “The Danger of Silence,” the speaker is the author himself. He is speaking on the subject of silence in 2014 in New York City. Clint explains, “Every day, all around us, we see the consequences of silence manifest themselves in the form of discrimination, violence, genocide and war.” From this sentence, we can infer that he believes that silence is a reason why discrimination, violence, genocide and war are still a thing in today’s society. Clint believes that silence is one of the reasons why crimes such as discrimination and violence is a thing which is why he is directing this article to those who do not use their voice.
“Silence is violence” is a common phrase used by people nowadays which references people who lack initiative when it comes to speaking out against oppression. The same phrase could be applied to the ideas within Shusaku Endo’s novel, Silence. Endo was clever to name his novel Silence, because the word is a very prominent symbol within the story. In fact, it plays a crucial role to the development of the main character. Although some readers may argue that the role of silence in the book is neutral, I claim that silence plays a negative role for the characters because it is what causes protagonist Rodrigues to renounce his faith. In the story, it represents the silence of God, which induces Rodrigues to question his religion through the torture of innocent Japanese Christians.
In the speech “ Beyond Vietnam- A Time to Break Silence”, Dr. King speaks out on the issues brought upon by the Vietnam War and how it has a negative impact on African Americans. He displays a frustrated and irritated tone to shed light on this problem in order to entice anger within the African American community of Harlem and call them to fight against social injustice and fight for their civil rights.
According to research, more than 1 in 3 individuals of the American population have some form of cardiovascular disease. Hypertension is at the forefront for being the most widespread circulatory problem in adults. This condition is distinguished by a person having consistent elevated blood pressure. Although the ranges for healthy blood pressure is different for everyone, medicine tells us that the ideal pressure should remain near 120/80 mmHg. These numbers are a representation of the force being exerted into our arterial system. The first number (Systolic) displays the amount of force upon the arterial walls while the heart beats. Whereas, the second reading (Diastolic) is a measurement of pressure while the heart is relaxed. One notably
In “A Silence that Kills” Lyndon Haviland expresses the idea that the public must confront the social inequities of tobacco use. Haviland believes the communities must communitcate a sence of urgency and engage all Americans in the battle against tobacco use. The author expresses her ideas thoroughly by concentrating on certain fact of tobacco use or second hand smoke affect, the epidemic in out current communities, the silence of the government, and the concern for public health. With the constant repetition of unity and a well-organized, concentrated article, the author easily captures the attention of the reader and the intended American audience. However, the author lacks information on
Many people have no idea that a song can be a wonderful poetry which is called lyrical poetry, but all songs are not poems. In this amazing poetry “the sound of silence”, both the authors Paul Frederic Simon and Arthur Ira Garfunkel ironically implied their frustration on the modern world and how it’s changing. In 60’s this lyrical poetry has left an indelible mark on pop culture. This poem’s lyrics has a disturbing picture of a society which work with materialism and self-absorption. The poem uses the imagery of light and darkness to show how people's ignorance and enthusiasm to destroys their ability to communicate even on simple levels. Day by day people are becoming more secretive about their life and forgetting being social on some level. Moreover, the narrators strongly felt these changes and transformation could lead us to a robotic life. The Sound of Silence" contains numerous poetic elements, including figurative language devices, rhyme scheme and tone. Throughout this poem, narrator is addressing the dark site of the society, people and how its leading them in to a false dilemma.
