Today the world in which we live in can be seen as a vastly media integrated way of life. Whether it is film, television or advertising, these forms of media constantly surround us, influencing and changing the way we live. But what about radio? Some say that radio is dying, that its use has become useless, that it was only an aid of assistance during the early and mid 1900’s. But the way I see it, I think that radio is more relevant and significant today than it ever was, especially for the diverse Australian youth cultures. Their lifestyle, education, political views and social aspects come under a large role due to what they listen to over the radio. So how do radio stations maintain and attract their listeners? Australian youths of different ethnicities are searching for more innovative and creative ways of sourcing and utilizing information in order to exchange their culture and way of life with the wider community so that they are able to gain a sense of belonging. By broadcasting the news and issues of a local community and the country of their origin – in their own language, it builds and strengthens new communities as well as establishing confidence and providing the essential atmosphere for the growing Australian youth.

For many people, community radio broadcasting plays a significant role in their lives especially for those who come from country or rural areas. As highlighted before, community broadcasting develops a sense of Australian identity, character and cultural diversity. Statistics show that the 9.5 million people that tune in to community radio each month state that they value their local content and diverse local music that their community radio produces for them. With regards to the Australian youth, community radio is of great importance as youths in rural areas are able to keep up to date with current news as well as their local news as opposed to more urbanised youths where their news is constantly provided with other forms of media during their everyday lives.
