I received a copy of The Secrets Between You and Me by Shana Norris through Net Galley, this has in no way influenced my opinion on the book. I read this on a whim, I was going through Net Galley and The Secrets Between You and Me. I did not realise that it was a companion to another novel but it in no way hindered my thoughts or confused me in any way. Hannah is the protagonist of The Secrets Between You and Me and sometimes in contemporary novels I don’t have a nice relationship with the female protagonist but Hannah, my heart broke for her. She puts on this façade that protects her, but she doesn’t always want to be this ‘perfect’ human that everyone makes her out to me. She holds a devastating family secret that is haunting her. All …show more content…
Hannah never thought that she would make real friends and I think that is in most teen girl’s heads. They think that the will ‘fit in’ but like Hannah finds out that is not always the case. It’s nice sometimes to read contemporary, because it’s real. Even though I liked the plot of The Secrets Between You and Me I didn’t love Shana Norris writing. It was good don’t get me wrong, but I was just waiting for more. Kate and Ashton are two spontaneous and quite enjoyable characters that befriend Hannah on her summer journey. They added something to the story that put a big, fat smile on my face. Then there is Jude and let me tell you, I want this man in my life, he is incredible. He has this tuff exterior that masks his hurt, and that he does need someone to help him. His and Hannah’s relationship is adorable and cute and heartbreaking, it’s real. The Secrets Between You and Me is not just about love and friendship but about family and that sometimes families are not perfect like they are in movies, most are broken and Hannah’s is no different. They all old their secrets and it’s tearing the family into tiny specks of

In an age where the United States has been colored many different colors over the course of many years, younger Americans tend to be more ignorant when it comes to their family's heritage. Journalist, Christine Granados makes an effort to remind readers of their heritage in order to help the readers learn to cherish and appreciate their family's culture. While questioning her readers' own acknowledgment of their heritage, Granados utilizes a reflective tone when reminiscing about her adolescent life in the United States as a Mexican American and describing the impact of her adolescent years on her life as an adult in her article, "True Colors." Granados appeals to the sense of empathy by immediately leading off her essay by recalling her

There seems to be a clear and concise message that Hellen Zenna Smith tries to get across in her novel Not So Quiet. That message implies no matter the war, it is a grizzly and destructive force and it can shake free even the deepest-rooted forms of social norms and values. Smith emphasizes this idea straight from the first part of the novel when Tosh shaved off all of her hair (14). She described how necessity took over in these women’s lives. This necessity caused most of the women to look at their roles in society differently. Some of the values and norms that are questioned in the text are, nationalism, femininity, sexual morality and social standing.
It was great to see they weren’t all one dimensional people in the background. They all had a purpose or another. With these characters came their problems. Most involved heavy topics, varying from overcoming the trauma of rape to accepting their sexuality or coming out to their loved ones. Every one of these situations were well depicted per character as they faced their struggle and it made mare care for them more.
There are many valuable aspects in life that may mean a lot to a person. In this case, friendship is one of the most important relationships a person can have. Human interaction is something necessary to survive, having a friend is essential to the well being of everyone. However, not all relationships with people can be considered a friendship because some may take advantage of others to gain something for themselves. Whereas, other friendships may last years and remain strong between the two people, but if there is no trust then there is a possibility of losing a friend. On the other hand, positive friendships still exist and are the ones to cherish and appreciate the most. The novel Speak written by Laurie Halse Anderson is based on a fourteen year-old girl named Melinda, who was sexually assaulted at a summer party. Six and a half billion dollars. Ladies and gentlemen, that is the approximate cost of a border that would stretch from San Diego to Texas. A chain-linked, steel, and barbed-wire border that would block hard work, dreams, and an inevitable fate. Through the brutal deserts, dehydration, and pain, only about a fourth of the immigrants trying to get to America make it. That means so much because of how many people try to accomplish this feat, considering still around nine-hundred thousand immigrants still make it. In all reality, borders are truly just an imaginary line some important people with wigs created. We, as a whole, decide how important things are. Money's just paper, an MLB star is just a normal human. However, something that always gets us, something that is made such a big fuss about, is a two-thousand mile long border, also known as The Mexican-American Border. Think about this. If we have such a powerful military and border patrol, why would we need such an intimidating wall? Or even why do we disown and hate these immigrants? Better yet, why would we spend all this money when we are trillions
A favorite aspect of mine is the way in which Leanne speaks so openly and honest about failed relationships and how one can work up from failure to success in the near future. Another reason why I was so keen on choosing to write about this book was that it is complex and the reader is able to grasp the reader’s thoughts and place themselves in the author’s shoes. We’re given the opportunity as readers to connect the book and our style of living and experiences to momentarily digest the meaning behind the authors writing and view the relation and whether it can be tied down to one.
