You could think of possibly anything and Walter Mitty would dream of it and make it seem special. The short story is called “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty”by James Thurber, it is an interesting story about a guy named Walter Mitty, who has a nagging wife constantly on him, but he goes through his boring life imagining about all the cool stuff he could do. A dominant theme in James Thurber’s “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” is Imagery. He shows imagery in his short story by making his character, Walter Mitty, imagine he's in these obstacles, which he pretends he's something he's not. Throughout the story, “The Secret Life of Walter …show more content…
Mitty. The protagonist in this story is Walter Mitty and the antagonist is Mrs Mitty. As we see throughout the story, Walter Mitty is a round character because we see him change as time goes on. The Proof which is in the text states, “He took one last drag on his cigarette and snapped it away. Then, with that faint, fleeting smile playing about his lips, he faced the firing squad; erect and motionless, proud and disdainful, Walter Mitty the Undefeated, inscrutable to the last.” This quote has a big impact because it shows that Walter Mitty at the end changed. We see that he changed because he has some of that bad sass attitude towards his wife Mrs. Mitty at the end by the store. Walter Mitty’s appearance is really odd, it states in the text from the outside source, “Who lives in dreams has become an archetypal figure of the ineffectual, weak-willed, bumbling male in american culture.” the impact of this quote states that Walter Mitty is not really a people person but he's just a person who goes through life trying to find epic missions to keep his life interesting. We can tell Walter Mitty is a weak willed person because he is not really determined to go through his boring life that's why we see him make up awesome adventures to satisfy his boring life. We can tell that he is an ineffectual person because he cannot cope with real life roles and situations, that's …show more content…
My question is who was the dynamic or static character? Walter Mitty or Mrs. Mitty. I think Walter Mitty was a dynamic character because of the way he develops throughout the story. We can see how he stands up for himself in the text, “What’s in that box?” “Overshoes,” said Mitty. “Couldn’t you have put them on in the store?” “I was thinking,” said Walter Mitty. “Does it ever occur to you that I am sometimes thinking?” She looked at him. “I’m going to take your temperature when I get you home,” she said. This quote has a big impact because It shows that Walter Mitty had enough of his wife nagging him to do stuff and basically acting like his mother instead of a wife. Mrs. Mitty is confused because she has never seen Walter Mitty take a stand for himself, but he would always listen to her and respect her, until this time when he finally snapped and took a stand, for in his mind, was the right thing to do. On the other hand, Mrs. Mitty is a static character because throughout the story she stays the same old person and doesn't really develop into a new person. It states from the outside source, “Mrs. Mitty is Walter’s dominating wife. She nags him to buy galoshes, to put on his gloves, and to drive more slowly.” Another quote from an outside source that helps is, “Walter’s failures in life and his successes in dreams are closely connected with gender roles.
Mitty. He then begins to daydream about standing in front of a firing squadron. The audience expects Walter to run away in this situation. However, in the story, the author explains, “Then, with a faint, fleeting smile playing about his lips, he faced the firing squad; erect and motionless, proud and disdainful” (1409). This also makes Walter’s thoughts about his relationship with Mrs. Mitty very clear; to Walter, it is preferable to stand in front of a firing squadron than deal with Mrs. Mitty. Through this fantasy and example of situational irony, it can be seen that relationships can become unbearable and thus, instead of fulfilling their purpose by helping both people in the relationship, they will instead hurt
In the movie and short story ¨The Secret LIfe of Walter Mitty¨ there was very different external conflicts, themes, and ways Walter acted. For example on the short story, walter's wife is always nagging at him for different things, but in the movie it is walter's boss and co-workers that are making his life difficult. In the short story, Walter is dull and not a very entertaining character 9 and has a very boring life, but in the movie he starts out that way but he gradually becomes a more adventurous, entertaining character with confidence. The theme of the short story was escaping reality, while one of the themes of the movie was beautiful things do not ask for attention. The differences in external conflict, ways Walter acts, and the themes between the movie and short story.
In the movie the movie of Walter Mitty they had more places for the setting, while in the short story the setting only takes place in a city named Waterbury where all they do is run errands. It had basically explained how they were in Waterbury but different places within the city. Due to this the short story didn't have many characters. However in the movie Walter was in the office and traveled many places. He was trying to track down Sean O’Connell to set negative 25 which was the cover photo. Some of the places Walter traveled included Greenland, Iceland, and Afghanistan, while he did these things it showed him that he is an important person. Every time Walter traveled he would always have some type of daydream, an example is when he was on the way to the volcano and he fell due to a daydream he had. Therefore the daydreams that Walter has affects what he gets done and i say that the movie adds much more detail than the short story.
Characterization is great to have in a short story such as "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty". Thurber shows characterization right from the beginning of the short story. The start of the story takes place in Walter's first day dream where he is flying an aircraft in the war but his wife ends up coming into the daydream and telling him he needs to slow down. Walter Mitty is a dynamic character because he is always changing and becoming more and more out of his wife's control. In the story, Walter is faced with a lot of hardship with his wife ruining his daydreams. His daydreams are a way for him to get away from reality and for him to be whoever he wants to be. "We only live
Life is about finding yourself, each other, and being true to one’s self. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is an extremely original and creative story written by James Thurber. The movie, The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty, starring Ben Stiller, conveys a daydreamer escaping his typical life by disappearing into a realm of fantasies filled with heroism, romance and action. In both the movie and the book, the title character retreats into fantasy as an escape from his mundane reality because in the real world, he is ordinary, insecure, and passive. In the short story, Walter
Second, a lot of character traits are shown for each person in the film. Walter Mitty is very shy and quiet at first but then changes throughout the movie. “To see the world, things dangerous come to, to see behind walls, draw closer, to find each other, and to feel. That is the purpose of life.” This quote can relate to Walter Mitty having a very shy, quiet, and awkward life. After going through all the action, danger, and experiencing all sorts of obstacles to find Sean, he became a person that stood up to everything he didn’t like. He was not afraid to speak up and make a move. Also, he was a braver person. Cheryl was also very quiet and turned out to be a very helpful and supportive person. She helped him
Because of this Walter has lost his self esteem and will to do anything to make his life better. This is important because it shows that Walter does not have a firm grasp on his own identity.
Walter Mitty’s personality is very timid. He is very absent-minded and has difficulties remembering things because of his on-going daydreams. When it comes to others he is very mindful but not with his wife. He respects her and all but doesn’t pay attention to what she says sometimes. How he is very absent-minded is by an example in the story is when his wife told him to slow because he was driving too fast. Then a second example of his character trait is he is a daydreamer like from the story he daydreams about being a world famous doctor.
Regardless the person Walter currently is, through the small hints and flashback we get a sense that he is very passionate and energetic through his pursue for skateboarding and aspiration to travel. In addition to this, he also suffered the loss of his father at a young age, this turned out to be truly life changing. Due to this he had to take on financial responsibilities to support his family, so he took a job at Papa-John. It was not long before his amusing and entertaining lifestyle cease to exist, as his repetitive life began. He is a very humble and modest person so, he does not complain about lost opportunities; however, once he is given a task he is forced to take risks and his ability to problem solve and to make quick decisions really shows in his personality, Through the difficulties he has experienced in order to find the missing negative reveals his long lost passion for adventure and experience.

However, with the conflict in the short story, Walter and his wife Mrs. Mitty clearly have issues that cannot be resolved.

Everything he is not in reality. Many of us experience a feeling of not having control in our lives at one point or another, and Thurber uses this to manipulate us into sympathizing with Walter. We all have a Mrs. Mitty in our

The title of the story suggests that not only does Walter Mitty isolate himself from reality by fantasizing, but that his dreams are a secret from the world. While Mrs. Mitty plays the antagonist, Walter Mitty takes part in being the protagonist with his primary personal figure. Mittys life does not contain drastic changes, “In a way he hates these weekly trips to town" (Thurber 35). Walter Mitty has fantasies due to avoidance in ordinary life.
It was not until Walter talked back to his wife at the end (5) that readers see the only concern she presents is of worry whenever Mitty does not act in his usual and expected behavior.
