The third and final component of the Flavian dynasty is Caesar Domitianus Augustus, the self-proclaimed “God” and ruthless dictator who reigned from AD 81 to 96. Domitian is the youngest son of the emperor Vespasian and Flavia Domitilla. He was the less favored son of Vespasian, his father valued his heir to the thrown and Domitian’s older brother, Titus. Domitian’s youth was largely spent living in the shadows of Titus. As a child Domitian lived on rural land that his father acquired, spending most of his time in his home on Pomegranate Street, which was later turned into a temple of the Flavian family. Domitian spent a degraded childhood consisting of struggles with poverty and infamy. He became accustomed to rural life as a child and when he fled from Rome whenever possible in order to sulk in isolation and stab fireflies. After the death of Vitellius when he was fighting a war up against Vespasian, Domitian gained the title as Ceaser. However, Domitian only held the name as Ceaser, he appointed a colleague to handle all Judicial decisions. In order for Domitian to gain a military reputation that would outshine his brother Titus, he devised a pointless expedition from Gaul to Germany, which was dismissed by his father 's friends. As a result, Domitian was reprimanded and failed at gaining a good military reputation. Domitian constantly turned to the idea of competition in order to gain power. Gaius Octavius Thurinus is a adopted son of Julius Caesar, He is the first true emperor of the Roman Empire, he was believed to be one of the most important emperor of Roma. In 43 EBC, Octavian gathered his army to kill the senate who planned the assassinate targeting Julius Caesar, his adoptive father. Then, he defeat Mark Antony and Cleopatra who was his allies but later betrayed him. Thus , he ended the war continued for decades and brought the great peace to Rome, In 29 EBC Octavian declared the pax romana, also know as the Roman peace. In 27 BCE, he was bestowed the title of Augustus by the Roman senate which was actually reestablished by Augustus himself. In order to remind the Romans the emperor’s power, Augustus ordered sculptor to sculpt the idealized form of him and send those sculptures to every provinces (Module 5 Session 6). The Augustus of Prima Porta is a great example of them.
Claudius was the third emperor of the Julio-Claudian Dynasty. He was born on 1 August 10 BC at Lagdunnum in Gaul. He was the son of Drusus Cladius Nero and Augustus’s wife Livia. But, he was then adopted by his uncle Tiberius. Claudius was born with defects that led him to limping, drooling, stuttering, and always being ill. His family members kept him out of the public so, there was no embarrassment. His whole childhood and teenage years was spent indoors, hidden away from everyone. He spent every day reading, which led him to learning liberal arts and history which helped him when he had more power.
Augustus was one of the main leaders during Pax Romana. His Rule was from 27 BC to 28 AD. He was one of the most important rulers in history because he helped to expand border and make peace for Rome. The Roman Empire was described as an autocratic government.
Octavian, the heir to Rome’s previous leader Julius Caesar, was given the title of Augustus, meaning “Revered One” in 27 B.C. He took power of Rome in 43 B.C and formed the Second Triumvirate which consisted of Marc Antony, Lepidus, and himself. Octavian and Marc Antony quickly shut Lepidus out of power and then later had a civil war over control of Rome which Octavian won. Octavian was humble and generous to the Roman citizens, he kept peace, and restored damages in Rome. Due to his effective leadership qualities, Octavian earned his new title of Augustus.
Augustus, who was once named C. Octavius, was the grand-nephew of Julius Caesar. Due to Caesar’s death from the uprising in 44 B.C., it was stated from his will, that Octavian was to be adopted as Caesar’s son. So his name was changed to C. Julius Caesar Octavianus (Porter, 2010). Later throughout his political and military career, he controlled Rome under the title Augustus (Brand, 2013). This begins a story of a young man to an emperor of the Roman world.
Trajan is considered by many historians as one of the greatest Roman emperors. He conquered Parthia and Dacia, expanding Rome’s borders. He was also the first non-Roman emperor in Rome’s history. Trajan was born in Italica, Baetica (modern-day Spain) on September 15th, 53 CE, and he died on either August 8th or August 9th, 117 CE in Selinus, Cilicia (modern-day Turkey). Trajan started his career as a legionary staff tribune in Syria, where his father was governor. After that, he became a praetor, which qualified him for command of a legion in Spain in 89 CE. In short stories like, “Where have you been, where are you going,” and, “Love in LA,” a though provoking antagonist was used by the authors to really give the stories some depth. The antagonist of, “Where have you been…”Arnold Friend takes on the persona of temptation to the protagonist Connie and really emphasizes the theme of be careful what you wish for. Connie was a young girl who repeatedly met up with older more mature boys; but one day Arnold Friend arrives at her house and coerces her to leave with him. Nero’s rise to power was a “long road full of treachery.” (T.V.) It was also full of change such as his name he was not always know as Nero his name was Lucius Domitius Ahenobarbus until his dad had died and his mom married her widowed uncle, who was the emperor of the time, and they changed it to Nero Claudius Divi Claudius Filius Caesar Agustus Germanicus. Later she convinced him to name Nero heir to the throne and allow him take his daughter Octavia as his wife. His adopted brother was reaching age to take the throne but he mysteriously died, “Many suspect that Nero poisoned him.” (biograpy.com, 2017) So, as one can see Nero was a very shady character who would stop at nothing to seize and hold the throne.
Emperor Nero, infamously known as one of the most malevolent, oppressive, and tyrannical leader throughout history, was the last ruler of the Julio-Claudian Dynasty. He was born outside Rome in Antium and his mother married his great uncle, Emperor Claudius, in order for her son to be the next Emperor of Rome. It wasn’t apparent that her son was to become one of the most feared and cruel leaders in Roman history from 54 CE to 68 CE. By examining his achievements and failures as an emperor, his influences and changes over the entire economic, political and social spectrum are revealed.

In his seventy sixth year Julius Caesar was assassinated by several senators on August 19, 14 CE. (Mellor 1). After Julius Caesar’s death, Antony (one of Caesar’s closest advisors) was expected to rule after him, but little did anyone know that Caesar was very fond of his nephew who voyaged with him on several missions and secretly adopted this fellow who went by the name of Gaius Octavius. (Mellor 6) Octavius would soon go by the name Augustus and become one of the greatest leaders to have ruled ancient Rome. Augustus ruler of Rome formulates a monarchical government in spite of Romans’ dislike of a monarchy without being assassinated like his grandpa Julius Caesar by maintaining a strong military system, gradually changing the constitution, and spending his money and time wisely.
