The Salem Witch Trials

In this essay I will talk about two main central ideas. First, some people accuse innocent people for witchery. Secondly, there is a lot of hatred in the town of Salem.

Abigail was being accused repeatedly of lying and making up all of the accusations which were of false nature. The many people who were hung because of her testimony was what would now hang over her head. When she was brought before Mary Warren her false tears and outcries of pain were all an act, but in her mind she was the only one who was correct in her dealings. Abigail was for unfathomable reasons a port of knowledge through which the judges and lawyers convicted and sent to death those who were accused. The awful girl was but of one mind. She wanted revenge and to be back to her “love”, John Proctor. Abigail tried and tried repeatedly to get her hands on John, she tried to get his wife hanged, and when she couldn’t have him she decided that no one else could. Abigail soon began to accuse John Proctor of the precise thing she was known for, witchcraft. Abigail had been in the woods when the young Mary Warren went mute from the shock of seeing Abigail drink chickens blood and curse Goody Proctor, all of these happenings had to do with Abigail Williams, and now she would have to suffer through her own crucible, to figure out how she was going to get out. And though Abigail did narrowly escape the major shackles of her crimes, the guilt and foreboding of being a treacherous liar found her rumored to be a young prostitute in Boston. She is sent into a spiral of confusion for her lust of John Proctor and is sent by her beast to do irrational thinking and send out a spell asked of by Abigail to Tituba who's is the creator of the demons within herself and others. The actions to come from Abigail will not only get her sent out of the Proctor house but only swirl like a hurricane and suck others into the eye to grab there attention and escalate the true happenings of false accusations to behold the uncertainty of others in the village. Although Abigail did go to face her demon John himself but had failed to overcome her most desired need of him to be with her she did not have the strength inside her to overcome the fear of rejection in the end which lead her to think irrationally when this demon walks in her body like a devils play ground to do as he pleases so she may have her most desired possession. No matter what the demon wants what it wants so she lies and proclaims false hoods on her fellow citizens and obtains followers to fall to her own cult which these demon uses to its advantage to cause the deaths of many citizens to gets it way. Although Abigail is still within the demon has taken control her worst fear has happened proctor no longer wants her so the demons reign has ended. She runs from the false hoods that

     Abigail William’s aggressive personality easily persuades the other girls to follow her footsteps, and back up anything and everything she says. This personality also frightens people in the courtroom to question her truthfulness, or her relation with John Proctor. Due to her forceful behavior, the girls support Abigail, and therefore become entangled in her web of lies, sins, and murders.

Abigail is one of the main characters in the book, The Crucible. She is an evil character who is rather selfish and is inconsiderate of other people. And because of her personality, she has conflicts with many characters in the book. Best example, she has conflicts with John and Elizabeth Proctor. She is a wicked child who would do anything to get what she wants and knows how to manipulate people and the situation to get to where she wants to be. Her conflicts began with a little desire to take John Proctor away from his wife, Elizabeth Proctor, and own him to herself and only herself.

The many differing interpretations surrounding the cause of the Salem Witch Trials 1692 makes the topic captivating as many historian perspectives offer explanations for the causation of the trials, yet the personal context of each historian has determined its historic reliability. This questions the level of objectivity each historian has in their responses to the Trials. The aims and purposes of a historian, as well as their differing methodologies may alter the approach the have towards the investigation of the Trials. Many interpretations offered for the causation of the trials include psychological illness within the victims, the supposed victims of witchcraft were fraudulent, or that social conflicts were to blame. This reveals the difficulty in simply identifying one cause of the trials due to the controversy in conflicting perspectives and the ambiguous circumstances of this event, which opens its ability to be debated and appeals to the curiosity of historians and the audience.

Their actions break the cohesion in Salem’s tight knit community. Reverend Hale sees this and warns the officials that they are courting rebellion. As a result of the trials, “cows are wandering loose, crops are rotting in the fields, and orphans are wandering without supervision”. Many homes have fallen into neglect because their owners were in jail or had to attend the proceedings. Everyone lives in fear of being accused of witchcraft.

By being selfish Abigail is portrayed to be aggressive and manipulative so she can save her reputation and life. Abigail and the girls in the community are scared because they were dancing and Abigail was going to drink a “charm” to lead to the death of Goody Proctor. One of the girls that was with them, Betty Parris is being unresponsive and has her father Reverend Parris very scared. Abigail is with the girls and she wants to get them intimidated so they will not tell the truth to the other people of the town. “All of you.

Abigail interferes with the courts’ divine ability to accuse witches because her lustful intentions which allows her to put on masterful acts to convince the audience that she is telling the truth. During the second act of The Crucible, Abigail’s relationship with John Proctor is revealed. Whenever

Introduced in the first act, Abigail, in tears, is begging John Proctor to accept her as his lover once more. They are watching over Betty Parris, the Salem minister’s daughter and Abigail's cousin, as she is locked in a state of unknown hysteria. The pair have confirmed Parris’ suspicions and are arguing about their affair. Abigail begins with separating the John Proctor of the past to the present one. She is hysterical, as if this “past” Proctor has died or disappeared. It is unreasonably dramatic and shows the audience Abigail’s lack of maturity. Abigail then goes on to mention her sleeplessness, alluding to their sexual endeavours. However, the audience is introduced to to a new layer of their past relationship when Abigail mentions knowledge. One is reminded of the biblical allusion when the Devil, disguised as a serpent, gives Eve the apple of knowledge, leading to humanity’s demise. This could be an act of foreshadowing as we can assume the oncoming witch hunt will lead to many deaths.

All the girls ended up acting all crazy because of what Tituba had put in the drink that abigail has made her make so that John Proctor would fall in love with her. Later on Betty ends up sick and doesn’t wake up and call in Reverend Hale for signs of witchcraft. The girls later on confess about seeing the devil and start making up rumors about who is involved with witchcraft. Her persistence and her obsessive love for Proctor leads her to take appalling actions such as accusing Elizabeth of witchery and getting others involved in the process. Wanting to take the place of Elizabeth, Abigail does everything she can to get her out of the picture. The dancing in the woods and the drinking of the charm was all driven by Abigail’s desire to get rid Elizabeth and take her place as Proctor’s wife.
