As you know the Civil War was fought in several different places. The Civil War that took place in our country revealed a great deal of things about our, at the time, young and growing nation. We had seen a country divided by ethics as well a catastrophic loss of life in war that had not been seen previously. Over 620,000 soldiers died from combat, accidents, starvation, and disease. However, one thing that stood out was the role that women played during this period of time. Around then, a lady’s part was not to be an officer. They were relied upon to be educators, cooks, young overseers, and cooks. Outside of serving as nurses and relief workers, women would don male disguises in order to make it to the frontlines as soldiers. Another outlying result in women doing this is the disruption in the gender roles that people, at the time, had seemed to be accustomed to. With this and other things in mind, women played a very notable and crucial role during the time that the Civil War took place. The American Civil War started in 1861 and took place for a few days shy of four years. At this point in time, the men and young men of age took to the battlefield while women and children sat at home. However, the initial question arises: why weren’t women allowed to fight in the first place? More than anything it was just simply the signs of the times. Women were not perceived as equals in any way, shape, or stretch of imagination during this period of time. Women were mostly
Rather it be experiencing extreme passion to discover the world, patriotism and determinism to fight for their beliefs, or simply a desire to help, many women joined the Civil War. As an amazing step of progress in history, these heroes effectively challenged traditional values
During reconstruction, leading women’s rights organizations saw an unprecedented opportunity for disenfranchised groups-north and south—to seize political rights. Like most wars, death of male soldiers forced women to take and active role in the workforce as well as war efforts. The never before seen death toll shocked Americans in both regions, and furthered the idea that human bodies, alive or dead, were inherently deserving of proper care and respect. Before the Civil War, federalism wasn't comprehensively adopted and many saw a limitation to federal power as a benefit, the war
The Civil War was the first time that women had ever had a major role in combat. They signed up for volunteer brigades, and many went to work as nurses for the soldiers. More than 400 adventurous women actually put on disguises
When bringing up the Civil War, many people connect it to the amount of deaths that had taken place or the idea that this war had put a stop to slavery. During this time in history, however, women played a significant role in the Civil War. Although it may have seemed that way, women in fact did not just sit idly and let the men go through war alone. In reality, women had multiple jobs to perform during this four year conflict. Women were highly influential throughout the war by the different tasks and jobs they would perform in place of or for the men. With all that new gained independence and responsibilities, women also began to realize their worth. At this point in time, it was one step taken towards respecting women at the same level as
One of the social aspects during the time 1861-1865 revolved around the new roles given to women. While the hundreds of thousands of men went to war, women were left to manage their new roles as head of the household. What this means is that they now had to undertake the jobs the men would usually do. Some of these new roles included running farms and stores, and working in government, factories, and offices while managing their own households, as well. The war also permitted women to enter former male-orientated professions such as teaching, civil service, and nursing, due to the shortage of men (Keene, 392). The nursing profession practically became completely female-orientated after around 30 years, despite the disapproval of many male doctors
This shows the rights many women in the North and South did or did not have. In the Northern states women were allowed to speak publicly but in the South women were always criticized or or worse if they spoke publicly(SOU 3/24). The difference of women's roles played a small effect in the war but the main number one cause was
When the American Civil War began on April 12th, 1861, over 3 million Union and Confederate soldiers prepared for battle. Men from all over America were called upon to support their side in the confrontation. While their battles are well documented and historically analyzed for over a hundred years, there is one aspect, one dark spot missing in the picture: the role of women in the American Civil War. From staying at home to take care of the children to disguising themselves as men to fight on the battlefield, women contributed in many ways to the war effort on both sides. Though very few women are recognized for their vital contributions, even fewer are
Southern Women and the Civil War: The Burdens of Patriotism and Womanhood in the Confederacy
Women were considered frail, unintelligent, and unable to make decisions in eighteen-hundredths America. It was traditional wisdom that a woman’s place was in the home. The Civil War marked a turning point for women and their role in society. Through my research consisting of books, letters, speeches, and articles, I will tell the story of a time in America when women rose to satisfy the needs of the country when most men were away fighting the war. This essay will analyze the roles of women in eighteen-hundredths America, by evaluating how women’s roles had changed; they now were nurses, soldiers/spies, and public workers/activists.
Some women served as nurses in the armies helping wounded soldiers who got shot a lot and got bombed during the battles so the soldiers can recover and go back in the battle. Women work very hard to help their family a lot , like the sons and their fathers. During the civil war the kids who were 18 and older have to join the war. A crazy fact is the 30 million people live in the united states at the time and 21 million were in the north and 9 million in the south. During the battle of gettysburg 50 thousand people has found dead it was one of the bloodiest battles in the civil war during that time. The winner of the battle during the civil war in gettysburg was the confederacy and they were 12 bloodiest battle of the civil war it was bigger then the ball run and franklin combined. Each day of the battle it has killed more and more people at least more than 50 thousand. The main reason the north one because general robert e lee march his way to virginia to Pennsylvania in late June 1863, and the south was tired and they didn't have stuff to eat and the north was healthy read to fight the battle.the Confederacy lost the American civil war not because it fought badly but because the union had more men and guns indeed more everything, so the union lost most of his
Women during the Civil War Women during the Civil War had a lot of different responsibilities. They also played a huge role in the Civil War. Men had to go serve in the war while the women had to take care of the children. While the women were at home they were thinking, “Why can’t we serve in the war.” They thought of themselves as useless people who had to stay home and do nothing.
The role of women in the Civil War has often been overlooked in history. In the mid-1800s, stereotypes about women flourished. Women were viewed as the weaker sex. They were thought to be fragile and dependent. Gender roles were strictly divided with the woman placed firmly in the home, in charge of domestic tasks and childcare. However, when their husbands, sons, fathers and brothers joined the military during the Civil War, many women assumed new roles. Much has been written about the American Civil War but comparatively little could used to be found about the role that women played serving in the war either on the Confederate side or in the Union. However, in recent years more research has brought their stories to the forefront. Women across the
The civil war was a tragic war, Many people fought and lost their lives to give us freedom. The civil war was not supposed to happen, Abraham wanted freedom and wanted everyone to be friends and get along but some people didn’t like what he wanted so they went to war to fight for it. The civil war happened in the year 1861-1865, During the war 620,000 people lost their lives fighting for the country. This passage is not only about the civil war but it is about women’s rights and It tells the reader about how the sneaky they were during the civil war.
The Civil War, fought in 1861, is known for its audacious men and their hard work towards the four-year-long war. Many would have never known that among the soldiers who fought were more than four-hundred women. During the 1800s, men believed that “true women” should not receive equal rights as they do and were expected to do housework and raise a family. When the war broke out, men were sent to fight in the war, leaving a gateway to a new lifestyle for women. The Civil War was an opportunity for women, allowing them to face new duties and responsibilities as a way to change perception between men and women, such as fighting in the war, nursing for the sick and wounded, and providing resources to the soldiers.
Both the Union and Confederate armies did not allow the enlistment of women. The women soldiers assumed the role of the man. By disguising themselves as a man, they took up arms and charged into battle (Blanton, 1993, p. 1). It is estimated that about four hundred women disguised their selves to be men and fight in the war (Righthand, 2011). Each of these women had their own reasons to fight, some did it for the salary to support their families, others for the loyalty to the cause, and some just for the excitement.
