The Role Of Technology In American Culture

In a world where the functions of cellphones, robotics, and such technology are rising, humans are becoming more and more dependent on them on a day to day basis. People are seen using a cell phone all the time and pretty much all jobs use some sort of technology in order to aid the workers. In the article “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” Nicholas Carr believes that the internet is altering the way that his mind works when he is reading and Sherry Turkle’s article “No Need to Call” depicts several instances of people’s lives and how they are affected by their phones and computers.

Technology and music have always been interlinked. As technology improves ways of recording and distributing music improves. Over history we have gone from scratchy records to clear and portable MP3s. New and innovative technology have helped to shape America’s culture as a nation.

American citizens today are so obsessed with being the future that they forget to live in the present. Wendell Berry, a writer that appreciates simplicity, asserts that Modern America has put education, the economy, and technology over religion, family bonding, happiness, and health. He disapprove the use of electronics because he feels that it does not significantly outclass the usage of a pen and a paper. While electronics did make life simplistic, Berry is correct in disapprove technology in that it alters one’s priorities, causes us to lose our abilities to concentrate, and causes citizens to miss out on the real world around them because it makes humans unable to fully live their life independently.

I feel some suffer more do to cultural or age demographics. Some cultures are more focused on literacy rather than technology. This can also be seen in the older generation compared to the youth of today who can’t wait for the next greatest IPhone or IPad. Fear of great intimidating factor as well, people are just more comfortable with doing what they know correctly rather than taking the chance and getting it wrong. So unless it’s an absolute must most will either avoid or delay the use of advanced technological equipment.

Technology has been a large part of American culture for the last 200 years and continues to grow more each year. This has made a large impact on our everyday lives and how we interact with one another. The U.S. alone sends over 6 billion texts each day! (Textrequest). This takes away quality time engaging with friends and family. Phones and other devices have taken over our way of communicating, thus affecting our relationships with others.

In today's society, the way in which information is spread drastically differs from that of yesterday, especially in different parts of the world - more specifically, the Commonwealth of Nations.

Throughout United States history, technological developments have played an important role in transforming American society. These developments have had both positive and negative effects on the United States and on American society. Two of these significant developments includes railroads and elevators, which were invented in 1890 and is still in use to this day. Both of the invention are important as the way they change American’s way of life living through that time period and to now. Elevators were a technological tool that aided transportation between floors for tall skyscrapers and buildings.

Since the rise of the digital age, technology has revolutionized transportation, education, and communication all around the globe. Third world countries now have the ability to treat diseases and educate their students using the internet. Technology allows us to better use our food, knowledge, and transportation. But not all of this development increases our ability to grow. In the colonial times of America, before technology became so prevalent, people knew the value of hard work and determination. Even when situations provided difficult outcomes, the settlers knew that they had to work in order to survive. Nowadays, we can cook food in a microwave, receive information instantly, and travel halfway across the globe in a few hours. If people from the twenty-first century switched places with the early American settlers, very few of today’s technological giants would survive.

In general everything has its positive and negative sides, but has anyone thought how technology could have a negative influence? With the new technology everyday that maks life simple, lets people forget the negative side to it. Life is somewhat becoming easier and the world is getting smaller, but everything has consequences. People being further apart, being on the phone for hours, day after day people loses deep concentration. Technology will have negative influence on American culture.

People in the world today depend on technology to help them succeed through life. However, the rate of its use among young kids and teen customers is increasing at a rapid pace. The reason being is that they would rather text a class friend and use social media rather than meeting up with them. In Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury, the scenario is similar to the world today, because nobody communicates or connects with people personally, leaving them isolated and alone. Also, in the article called “Tasking Multitasking To Task”, by Mark Harris, he explains that technology is affecting the human mind to lack interest in social skills and hobbies. Harris’ claim that technology is corrupting our lives is correct because many people have lost their attention span for anything beyond a simple phrase.

Technology is moving forward today because people are developing new machines which have advanced technology. Technology will help human beings to create or get closer to the future, and it can help in so many ways. Also, technology is making people smarter than before because technology has brought today new programs, new creations, and different ways to think due to the new advanced technology. Technology will always help the people because that is the way the world moves forward to the future. However, there are people who do not know how to use technology, so the question remains: is technology a negative influence in America culture? Today people should learn how to use technology because is not a negative influence in America culture. Technology has become a great benefit to us but many people have taken it too far. According to researcher and surveys taken all over the world shows that a large number of people may have become addicted to their technological devices and are not able to make it through a day without their cell phones or other technological devices. Many have concerns that people would rather use these devices than to have a face to face conversation. The addictions of technological devices are on the rise. Today, the world is much different than it was fifteen years ago, much less fifty years ago. The progression of technology has been even more significant than ever before in the last several years, but has ultimately lead us astray from our core character. The production of cell phones, social media updates, websites, and technological tools is constant, but these new and improved technologies have left the world with very few longstanding advancements. Though the internet has brought the world innumerable innovative opportunities, life before technology was much more efficient, filled with many more promising benefits: responsibility, socialization skills, and controversy.

Before the time of technology, people have to accomplish ways to search for information quickly and available. Today, every time when I relax at my grandparent’s house doing homework or looking at my phone. Within two seconds my grandparents will always remind myself that when they were younger there were not these items like iPhones or MacBook. No, if they needed research they had no choice but to journey down to the library and gaze at every book. They were not able to call or text their friends considering they were not as “advanced” as society is today. Looking and comparing at the different times in which ourselves live, shows how people are taking advantage of the technology, which could have a negative impact on your social skills

Just as students grow up around the world have everyday, technology also finds a way to grow and become better and better. It was only 20 years ago when we didn’t even have advance computers or even the thought of creating smart phone. Around 20 years ago, there was hardly any information on the Internet because it had just gotten started. Also it was a lot more expensive because there was very few people who owned anything like a computer or especially a mobile phone. This goes to say that all our information and research all came from books, also our way of communication was way more social than just texting or call someone. Due to how well this century is doing, technology is very much replacing the way we communicate and within this paper, I will be pointing towards the way these changes affect our social status.
