With only three actors, a chair each and a room of space, Brisbane based theatre company Zen Zen Zo has redefined what we know to be a classical Shakespeare tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, and has created a modern interpretation of this tale through dynamic physicality, specific actions, the elements of drama and both classic and modern texts. The physicality used in this performance manipulates the most common viewpoints of society, to draw in the younger audience and to relate and combine the youth of modern times to that of hundreds of years ago. Throughout the performance, multiple elements of drama including movement, action, language and physicality were used to explore the topic of the strength of love and the rejection of authority, to refer to relatable topics for a younger modern audience. …show more content…
The couple marry in secret and lie to their families, hoping to avoid a domestic conflict, but through this simple act their destiny was determined, resulting in both of their deaths. This tale has been displayed throughout the performance using physical theatre; a specific genre of theatrical performance and drama that expresses a story through usage of physical means, such as dance or miming. Movement, physicality of the body and the use of the elements of drama play a predominant part in expressing the narrative of a piece through physical theatre, clearly shown in Zen Zen Zo’s performance. This theatre presentation explores and represents the physical aspects of the Shakespearean tale, referring to specifically key scenes to display the roles and relationships through physical
In William Shakespeare’s play “Romeo and Juliet”, Shakespeare presents characters in difficult situations in Romeo and Juliet through various language techniques and structure. Romeo and Juliet were star-crossed lovers. Both Romeo and Juliet were from feuding families that would not approve of their marriage. In the play they are presented with many difficult circumstances. The play was set in the Elizabethan era; there was a significant change in religion, family and politics. Attitudes and key scenes highlight the theme of love in difficult circumstances and prepare the audience for Romeo and Juliet’s suicides at the end of the play. In this essay I will be exploring the ways Shakespeare presents characters in difficult situations.
How long does the spotlight last? Like almost always time is not kind. Many people argue that a work of literature before 1900 is outdated and has nothing to contribute to modern society. Other argue that classic works are timeless in what they say about human nature. Should we respect the classic pieces of literature that is the foundation for society today, or should we evolve and find a new foundation? One would think that most literature pieces written before 1900 are irrelevant because society has changed and although human nature has not changed it is presented in a different way. Romeo and Juliet is a non relevant work due to its outdated stance on marriage, equality, and definition of love.
Just like in the story of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, there are actual true events very simaler to some of the parts in the story. In 2005, 2 families by the name of Soliz and Ortiz had a violent breakout including guns, injuring 6 people. You will find that the story of Romeo are relateable to the article, “Six Wounded in Fla. ‘Romeo and Juliet’ Firefight”.
One might think that masculinity is only a mental and ethical issue, yet throughout the tragic play of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, masculinity proves to be a two headed beast that not only is a mental but also physical problem. All the way from the beginning in scene 1.1 to the final scene of act 5, there was constant conflict occurring with short breaks of love and triumph collapsed by more ensuing conflict. Furthermore, a majority of this clash between the two families, Capulets and Montagues, was indirectly or directly evoked by the masculine behavior exerted by the men in the story. All things considered, the tragedy where two lovers upon many others meet their ultimate fate of death would have never been a tragedy without all of the masculinity that all of the men characters seem to exude. All throughout this essay, it will become more apparent that the idea of the internal and external need for masculinity in the men has consequently kindled the fire of conflict between the Montagues and Capulets in the tragedy because of the status quo, disrespect for women, and mindset of a masculine man.
The human condition is a topic that William Shakespeare used widely. Almost every work of his explores the depths of the human mind like no other. This term refers to the darkest parts of the human psyche; we are full of dark morals and flaws, no matter how enlightened one may seem. One of his most notable plays, Romeo and Juliet, includes star-crossed lovers, murder, grief, and hatred. Every character Shakespeare wrote in had a specific role in shaping and accelerating the story with their flaws and motivations.
I can connect the Capulets to the world because when the Capulets do not listen to Juliet when she doesn't want to marry Paris. This is similar to Warm Bodies because in the movie Julie tells her dad that the zombies are changing. This is shown when the Capulets say “I'll give you to a friend. And you not be, hang, beg, die in the streets.(act 3.5 line 201-202 Shakespeare)”. Here in the story it shows how he does not care what Juliet has to stay and marry Paris no matter what. He doesn't care Juliet has no power in this discussion. This is also shown in warm bodies when Julie tries to show that the zombies are changing. She even shows her a zombie that has changed. In both situation the father has become oblivious because of their madness.
The Zeffirelli production shows Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet in a unique way. The Zeffirelli production puts the play relevant to new contexts
The famous Shakespearian play “Romeo and Juliet” features multiple forms of conflict. Conflict is defined as a fight, battle, struggle or argument and can occur in the form of group, inner, physical or verbal. To gain a better understanding of the conflict that occurs in Romeo and Juliet, one must analyse the scene and discover the dramatic language technique used by characters. Techniques such as metaphor and personification are used to add depth and are found throughout the text in order to communicate conflict
In the book Romeo and Juliet, two young people fall in love and end up getting married in the first week they meet, and eventually end up killing themselves over each other. The problem with this is that they have only known eachother for barely a week which means that they don’t know a whole lot about eachother so they are just basing their love life on their physical appearance. In this little time together having to avoid their parents seeing them together because their family hates each others guts, Romeo and Juliet do not have a lot of time together to get to know the real them. The difference between physical attraction and dating is that dating is where you know each other well and don’t just date them because of their looks. Physical Attraction is where you just met someone and you think that they look good and you think that you would date the person.
Romeo and Juliet, a tragic love story between two-star crossed lovers, portrays themes that tend to revolve around young love. As the play introduces it’s two main characters, you soon see the challenge that the young lovers would have to face which lead them to the fate of death. The use of imagery and metaphoric language allows us to visualize the theme that is being set throughout the play. Shakespeare gave us several opportunities with his delicate word choice to understand the themes such as “love” and “duality of light and dark”. To help convey these themes to the given audience, Shakespeare carefully words the dialogue of each character to give us different views on each scene.
Baz Lurhmann’s creation of the film Romeo and Juliet has shown that today’s audience can still understand and appreciate William Shakespeare. Typically, when a modern audience think of Shakespeare, they immediately think it will be boring, yet Lurhmann successfully rejuvenates Romeo and Juliet. In his film production he uses a number of different cinematic techniques, costumes and a formidably enjoyable soundtrack; yet changes not one word from Shakespeare’s original play, thus making it appeal to a modern audience.
If we are to believe that the prologue in Romeo and Juliet gives away the story of the play, what does it say about human nature that it takes such grief and sacrifice to reach common ground? I think this is saying that human nature is stuck to beliefs or traditions that they had been taught as kids. This can be seen in the play of Romeo and Juliet because the families of each lover are sworn enemies. The play says, “Two households, both alike in dignity, In fair Verona, where we lay our scene, From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,”. This means that they all have honour, and are respected, but are involved in an old feud that goes back years, and yet none are able to forget the past, or even forgive it.
Shakespeare’s classic Romeo and Juliet has been reimagined many times across different mediums. One interpretation that stands out among the rest is Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 film of the same name. The most shocking and powerful difference between Luhrmann’s work and other films or stage productions of this piece, is the movie’s setting. Luhrmann’s Romeo and Juliet is set in the modern city of Verona Beach, New York, ruled by two powerful business families, the Montagues and the Capulets. Themes, language, and ideas remain the same, while places, props, and wardrobes are updated to the twentieth century. This compelling change helps emphasize the violent, fast-paced, and chaotic society of the play, which comes to precipitate the tragic demise of the two main characters.
Despite the fact Shakespeare having written two plays from two unmistakably distinctive genres; I have been able to investigate the ways in which the plays are homogenous, which indeed suggest that they are both unique inside their own particular rights. Love, apprehension and extreme emotion are all present throughout the story of 'Romeo and Juliet' similarly included in the Merchants of Venice. In the play Romeo &Juliet written by William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet's fates are interlaced from the moment of their birth. Shakespeare's use of dramatic structure in the play including the switching between comedy and tragedy intensifies tension in scenes and brings the audience closer to the two youthful partners as we witness their relationship
The word love can mean many things. Love can be an object, emotion, and a life. However, love could lead to a loss of power, prosperity, and status. In the literary work “Romeo and Juliet” written by William Shakespeare, the readers are introduced to a tragic love story. In this play, readers are also shown the different perspectives of love and the many downfalls it could lead to. The central theme of this work is the recklessness of love. The theme is significant because it is shown throughout the whole story and it’s a strong force that takes place of all the other emotions and values. In this play, Shakespeare uses characters to present different aspects of love. In addition, Nurse, Mercutio, and Romeo completely show what actual love is and what it is like to lose it due to their experiences.
