In Hindu, Maya represents the world that we perceive with our senses (Molloy, 2009). The literal translation has two meanings, that of illusion or magic and material or matter. The interpretation of Maya leads to an interesting duality for the term in the Hindu religion. It both represents the physical world that we can perceive with our five senses, but also the hidden divine reality that lies hidden underneath. Maya can mean illusion or magic, which is sometimes taken as a negative connotation as it implies that the reality that we see and live is an illusion (Kinsley, 2005).
