The Role Of Corruption In The Great Gatsby

The two classic parties in The Great Gatsby may differ physically, but are driven by the same motive. The Great Gatsby took place in the 1920’s, when the American Dream was at its peak. The main characters are Nick, Gatsby, and Daisy, who live in a city where the American dream was big – essentially another city the American Dream corrupted. The American Dream transitioned from being all about hope, to a dream filled with money, or that money was everything, which ended up corrupting many people’s lives. The Great Gatsby clearly shows the corruption the American Dream caused, especially with the two parties. In Gatsby’s party, there was a lot of moral corruption, which can be seen from what a party guest says about Gatsby, during the party. “Somebody once told me they thought he killed a man once,” (46) was a clear action of moral corruption. This is an action of moral corruption since killing a man is moral corruption. In Tom’s party, moral corruption was huge and played a major role. “Making a short deft movement Tom Buchanan broke her nose with his open hand,” (39) is a major example of moral corruption since it is domestic abuse. Between these two examples, the only similarity is that both examples involved hurting somebody, whether it’s murder or domestic abuse. The people are still physically different, but based on the American dream make the same choices. There also was another example of moral corruption at Gatsby’s party, and is said by Nick, when he was describing the party. “Champagne was served in glasses bigger than fingerbowls,” (49) is also an example of moral corruption, as Champagne was served and consumed in huge quantities, when it is supposed to be drank in small quantities, as it is somewhat bad for you. Another example could be seen at Tom’s party as well, when a guest explains Myrtle’s and George’s situation. “It’s really his wife keeping them apart. She’s a Catholic and they don’t believe in divorce,” (35) is an example of moral corruption because it is infidelity. While infidelity and extreme alcohol consumption are two different things, they are still linked to moral corruption as they both are abnormal things to do. Between the two parties, moral corruption was shown differently, as in Gatsby’s party there was murder and excessive alcohol consumption, and in Tom’s party there was domestic abuse and infidelity.
