The Rocking-Horse Winner Analysis

“The Lottery” and “The Rocking-Horse Winner” may have a few similarities, but when it comes to their conflict, plot, and structure, they differ for the majority.

For every decision and action a person makes, he/she always has an intention and motivation to do so. Nora Helmer and Hester in the works A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen and “The Rocking-Horse Winner” by D. H. Lawrence face choices related to finances. Due to the differences in severity and inspiration for money between the two, Nora can be used as a lens to better fathom the selfishness and greed of Hester’s actions in relation to riches. Moreover, the theme of money in A Doll’s House sheds light on this same theme in “The Rocking-Horse Winner,” especially as it pertains to these characters. While both Nora and Hester adore wealth, Nora’s attitude toward money is selfless, whereas Hester’s outlook is self-indulgent; this is seen through what the characters do with the money, how their perspectives develop regarding wealth, and how they are viewed by other characters.

Looking at both stories, the Lottery appears to be a means of how the town remain at a low population and that the Lottery was a way of controlling that population. The Rocking-Horse Winner on the other hand uses gambling as an alternative to making money and that money is earned by being lucky and that you had to have an imagination in order to possess this luck. The Lottery focused its story around an ancient black wooden box that held the Lottery choices within it and the Rocking-Horse Winner was focused upon an old style Rocking Horse that was often used by children long ago and something that is not used today that often. Both endings of each story were odd enough whereas in the Lottery, the death of another person came as a ritual that was expected to happen so very often and in the Rocking-Horse Winner, Master Paul, the woman’s son sought the approval of his Mother concerning his having luck. The boy died that night and the Mother had not acknowledged that she knew that her son was lucky even though she was eighty –odd thousand to the good. Very odd turn of events in both stories and both had unusual endings in which there seems to be that type of contrast. Not that they were similar in story form but that they both ended in sadness. Finally, as the reader of both stories you never realized what will happen at the end until it all happens. In the Lottery when Tessie Hutchinson started to protest against the drawing that is when you realized as the reader that things turned for the worse for Tessie. In the Rocking-Horse Winner, Hester knew something just did not feel right in her spirit.

The short story that has the best quality off literary fiction would be, The Rocking-Horse Winner by D H Lawrence, a story about a young boy trying to win his mother’s love by seeking the luck she thinks she does not have also, wanting to give her the luxurious lifestyle she dreams of by betting on horse races he begins to make money to hopefully make everything better. This short story represents setting, plot, theme, symbol and character very well. Without these main points of emphasis being made a short story would have no structure so that’s what I feel is most important.

To start off with one major difference is the point of view of the stories. In “The Lottery” the point of view is omniscient (all-knowing). “Charles” point of view is 1st person because it is told by the wife. To add to the three major differences is the genres. The genre of “The Lottery” is horror because of what happens at the end. The genre of “Charles” is comical because of the stuff that “Charles” does. Taking into consideration when and where these two stories took place, one can come to the conclusion that they are very different in setting, as the one playoff in a town square and the other in a house. In “The Lottery” we can determine the exact time of the setting, whereas in “The Rocking-Horse Winner” we are not determine the exact time of the setting.

“The Lottery” and “The Rocking-Horse Winner” both provide the reader with settings that could not be more different. In “The Lottery” the author Shirley Jackson uses the setting as a way to avert the reader’s attention from what is actually happening in the little, town square. While D.H Lawrence author of “The Rocking-Horse Winner” uses the setting to shape the story and to gain the readers attention by telling of a beautiful woman and her lack of luck.

In “The Rocking-Horse Winner” we are introduced to a woman who author D.H Lawrence states, “was beautiful, who started with all the advantages, yet she had no luck. She married for love, and the love turned to dust. She had bonny children, yet she felt they had been thrust upon her, and she could not love them.” When I dive into the psychology behind that statement, I come up with a thought that this beginning draws similarities to Lawrence’s own upbringing with his coal miner father and schoolteacher mother. While both authors used symbolism to conduct the message of their stories the themes of the stories could not have been more different. In “The Lottery” the theme of the story is the lack of love shown by the villagers. The villagers follow custom without any questions asked. Other children unfortunately grow up in abusive houses while some live with very living parents. These are all interesting dynamics, and something every child can relate to. Lawrence, is an informative story about luck and one's own fortune.  In this story, Lawrence attempts to illustrate how one can guide one's own fate, instead of allowing things to happen by chance.  He believes that the only person that affects what happens to someone, is really that person himself.  "Everything is what you make of it," is Lawrence's message to the reader.  By his use of characterization, instructional images, and irony in The Rocking Horse Winner, D.H. Lawrence attempts to convey to the reader that success and luck are not something that one simply waits for to arrive, but things that one must works to achieve.

“The Rocking Horse Winner” is a short story written by D.H Lawrence that follows the short and tragic life of a boy named Paul, who assumes he has amazing luck after realizing he can predict racehorse winners by furiously riding his rocking horse until he reaches a trance-like state. Unfortunately, as his family takes advantage of his gift and starts gaining more money, Paul’s luck begins to kill him. Literally. Throughout the story, there are several themes evident, such as wealth, life, conscious, existence; luck, family, and greed. The conflicts displayed are man vs man, man vs self, and man vs. society. The rocking horse has become an obsession for paul and the potential benefits it would have on his family, ultimately not knowing the actual harm it will cause.

When a person is lucky, it does not have to mean that they are fortunate with money. Luck is the chance for things to go the way you want them to go with out having any control over the situation. In The Rocking Horse Winner, Hester, the mother seems to believe that luck is strictly having money, and when there is no money, there is no luck. Hester's idea of luck meaning money brings forth the two ideas of greed and death throughout the story.

of life, Humans have an incredibly high expectation of one another. We tend to expect a lot from our friends, family, or even our co-workers. We tend to criticize one another when what we were expecting from that individual was not followed through on. In “Rocking Horse Winner”, the author paints a portrait of how jealousy and gambling can, and potentially, will destroy and paralyze someone’s life.
