It has been difficult to get information about Genghis Khan and the Mongol Empire until recently because of destruction, poor communication of information, and restriction. The first aspect of the difficulty of gleaning information about Genghis Khan stemmed from Stalin and the Soviet Union. Weatherford illustrates the complete lack of respect for history and culture in the following text: "During the 1930s, Stalin's henchmen executed some thirty thousand Mongols in a series of campaigns against their culture and religion". A lack of communication between generations also warped the history of Genghis Khan and made it difficult to learn more about him and the Mongol empire. A bloody conqueror? No doubt. But it is in the facts that history often neglects that we find the true measure of the man who conquered the largest land empire this world has ever known. Chingis was born Temujin, in the year 1162 in the Khentii Mountain regions of modern day Mongolia. A Legend holds that he came into the world clutching a blood clot in his right hand, which was a portent of things to come. At the time, there were no people known as the Mongols, instead, the steppe was populated by disparate warring tribes that were just as likely to war on each other as any outsider. Temujin’s father was murdered by one of these rival tribes before he was ten years old, and in the way of the time his people abandoned him and his family so that the tribe would not have to feed them. It is from these humble beginnings that the man that would one day win the title Chingis Khan, or Great Ruler began his career. As a foreshadowing of the iron will and ruthless nature that Chingis possessed, he killed his own brother for stealing food from the family. In one lifetime, he not only conquered and united all of the peoples of the step into a single nation and people, but he raised an army the likes that the world had never seen. With it he conquered an empire that spanned nearly twelve million square miles (Holiday 2012). With the might of the Merkit, Jurkin, and his original army he battles the Tatar and emerges victorious. Later the alliance he held with Toghrill of Kereit ends and Temujin kills him so he would have one less opponent to stand in his way of supreme power, and he takes over the Kereit tribe.
