“Fifty Shades of Grey” by E.L. James, “Gabriel Trilogy” by Sylvain Reynard, and “After” by Anna Todd, are books that sold millions of copies all over the world. What do they all have in common? They were all once fanfictions. But, these are just some of the vast amount of books that were originally fanfiction. Because of these books, fanfiction has been getting a lot of attention over the last year. If you didn’t know what fanfiction was before, there is no way you could ignore it now. Some people may say that it’s just a childish trend that obsessed teens have just started doing. Or people may praise it, and say it’s the start of a new era. But, let me tell you, fanfiction has been around for a very long time. It’s hard to pinpoint where
As new genres in the world of novels fade out of the public eye, new ones arise just as fast. A genre that has taken the world by storm is the dystopian trope. Many new young adult novels have this new genre incorporated into the story, often weaving in themes of sadness or conformity being overcome by rebelliousness and hope. It is one of the newest genres, yet one of the most widely varied compared to older ones. Even novels from 70 years ago, such as Ayn Rand’s Anthem share similarities with the same types of stories from only 20 years ago, like The Giver by Lois Lowry.
Some might claim the YA genre has grown to be too dark for its target audience. Meghan Gurdon, a firm believer of this idea, explains why she believes this in her article, “Darkness Too Visible”. Gurdon describes the experience of a mother of three in a bookstore looking to purchase a YA novel for one of her children, when she found herself leaving the bookstore empty-handed due to the content of the teen books. While teen books decades ago contained less violent/corrupted material, times have changed along with the genre. She is concerned that these books could have an effect on these young readers’ brains as they are merely transferring from childhood to adulthood. Gurdon still has faith that YA books would sell just as well and connect with young readers today without all of the dark subject matters discussed in them these days.
Vampire stories have universal themes that provide the backbone for every dark tale. The unholy essence that any vampire story provides sets the stage for the message that the Church is the way of life and will save you from creatures of evil. From in class readings, we can see all the major religious themes of the classic vampire story. The common religious theme is the abscess of light is the absence of holiness and is the path to eternal damnation. Darkness is the prime universal fear of humanity mostly because we, as a species, are not nocturnal creatures; therefore, we have developed a fear of the predator filled darkness of night. Using figurative descriptions of darkness as the enemy, the Church preaches the way of the light. The

The term "at will" applies both to the person hired and to the person who does the hiring. As the term suggests, both parties have the ability to end the employment whenever they wish because there are no "strings" attached to it (Employee Issues, 2012). In a normal contract situation, a person is employed for a specified amount of time and the individual knows that as long as a contract is in force what is expected and the remuneration that comes with the employment. This type of contract comes with a guarantee of employment as long as the individual meets the requirements of the contract. A contract also guarantees the employer that the employee has to fulfill certain obligations by law. In the case of "at will" employment, there is no contract signed by either party. Even though the employee may interview and have to fill out certain paperwork to obtain the job, they are not contracted for the work. The employee is hired with the understanding that they can leave employment at any time and that the employer can do the same. This also means that the employer is free to change the specifications of the job any time they will (Employee Issues, 2012). Another facet of this type of employment is that the employer is free to choose the type of employee they want. Even if a policy seems discriminatory, the employer is able to apply it if it does not in some way violate the law. As a final note on the definition of such employment, employers will generally
As the era of literature slowly declines, the expert critiques and praise for literature are lost. Previously, novels were bursting at the seams with metaphors, symbolism, and themes. In current times, “novels” are simply short stories that have been elaborated on with basic plot elements that attempt to make the story more interesting. Instead of having expert critical analysis written about them, they will, most likely, never see that, as recent novels have nothing to analyze. Even books are beginning to collect dust, hidden away and forgotten, attributing to the rise of companies such as Spark Notes. An author deserves to have his work praised, no matter how meager and the masses should have the right to embrace it or to reject it. As
The hot seller Fifty Shades of Grey is a descriptive novel of a man fulfilling his dirty fantasy. It starts off clean talking about a man meeting a women, Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele, then leads to talking over coffee, and advancing to a friends with benefits. The friends with benefits is more than just hooking up with another, it becomes a submissive and dominant relationship. Christian is the dominant and exercises his sexual fantasies on Anastasia Steele who is the submissive. Throughout the novel there are correlations to the ideas and discussions in the Sociology – Gender, Power, and Society class. There are many different ways that this connection takes place, such as through the dialogue, the way things are described and
The Twilight Saga by Stephanie Myer created a massive fan following that grew into a supernatural franchise. The story of Bella and Edward was in the hands of countless teenagers and adults alike, captivating audiences with the classic story of young love, but with a vampire twist. The books were published starting when I was a young teenager, and I was not immune to the charms of a sparkly vampire fighting his desire for love for the sake of her safety. I religious read all four books, a few times, until the hard covers cracked at the edges, and the open books fell open to my favorite parts from being opened for so long. After the books created a sensation, a movie series was created. In a non-surprising fashion, the movies were popular, but as any book lover will tell you about any movie made after a book, the book was better, way better. Reading the story at the time, I ignored critics of the book, swearing by its love story and defending the text as it stood in my world. Re-reading this book as an adult who has continued to read, I came to the realizations that my tastes have evolved over time. I still enjoyed the story during my re-read this past time, but the writing was not as striking; gone was the passion and addiction so deep I could not set the books down. The first time I read Breaking Dawn, I read it straight it twelve hours not stopping for anything. I read from 7pm until 7am, this month reading Twilight, was nowhere
“Bridge to Terabithia 2” is an example of fan fiction because of its similarities and differences to the original. Similarities are important because they help the readers understand the original story and what is being changed. Knowingly, the author writes, “Since that fateful day Leslie Burke was only a shadow of her former self” (5). As in the original, one of the main characters is struggling with the emotions of shock, sadness, and depression after the near death of her best friend. However in the original, Jess grieves over Leslie’s death; the fanfiction includes just enough similarities for the reader to understand the story. Although similarities are essential, differences are also needed. Understanding this, the author pens,”’ I can
Romance books are about passion and relationships, but have you read a book that creates fantasies and false hope? If you have, can you remember the name of the book? Well, this essay is going to discuss how Fantasy Theme works by analyzing and examining a book. The book that is going to be examined is called Fifty Shades of Grey written by EL James. This book goes well with fantasy theme because two different people who live completing different cross paths and they have to create a new living style together to meet each other’s needs. Which leads, to many controversy, but at the same time there are people who enjoyed reading the book. According to Brienza, “more then 100 million copies have been sold, and been translated into over 50 languages, and topped bestseller all over the world” (89).
There are three types of major copyright issues that can arise on writing platforms, like Fanfiction.net, that base their work off of others. The first arises when the original author feels the fanfic alters the nature of the original piece. For example, J.K. Rowling does not oppose innocent, truly fan-written Harry Potter fanfics; however, she has taken legal action against those whose stories that try to sexualize her work (2). Another reason an author may object to fanfiction based on copyright infringement is if they feel it borrows extensively from the author’s own work. Anne Rice, the author of Interview with the Vampire and its sequels The Vampire Chronicles objected to fanfics that even used just her characters names, even asking Fanfiction.net to remove anything posted that contains them (3).
“Bridge to Terabithia 2” is an example of fan fiction because it was written as a spoof, not by the original author, but a fan -hence the name fan fiction. In the fan fiction, the author creates a new ending, of Jess dying instead of Leslie. In the original, that didn’t happen. Another example is a new character, Mr. Mason. The writer gives Mr. Mason a role of guardian angel, who comes to take away Jess, as he says, “‘Now, if you will follow me we have another journey ahead of us’” (8). This is implying the afterlife, which Jess has to travel to. In the fan fiction, Jess: “... was placed in a medically induced coma” (5). He didn’t go on the museum trip, instead traveling to Terabithia by himself. The rope broke, as it would’ve with Leslie.
According to my understanding, I can define literature as any form of writing that contains deep meaning, especially in characters, and also presents the view of the author of the piece of literature. It is important to also note that pieces of literature contain artistic value. Works such as fiction, drama, poetry as well as criticism are recognized to contain aspects of artistic value. According to the Russian Literature, written works represent the people together with their language, culture and many other issues over a certain period of time.
For the assignment I am to choose one poem and one work of fantasy from two different cultural traditions. Choosing the fantasy was easy, but choosing the poem was a little difficult for me. For the poem, I chose “High Flight” by John Gillespie Magee, Jr. The poem was listed in our textbook as a sonnet. A sonnet is a very old form of poetry, having gained prominence during the Renaissance period. It is also very sophisticated form and therefore not found much in poetry for children(Russell, Chapter 6, 2009).
