The Scientific Revolution is said to have begun when Nicholas Copernicus released his book, The Revolutions of the Heavenly Bodies, in 1543. He released this book right before he died because he knew that he would be accused of heresy. The church, at this time, believed that the Earth was the center of the universe. Because he was trying to say that the church was wrong, he knew that he could not release his book. He waited until right before his death to release his book. The timing of the release of Copernicus’ book was an essential part of the Scientific Revolution because the Church could not confront him after the book was released.
The idea that the Earth was the center of the universe was not challenged until about 1507 when Nicholas Copernicus went to Rome and chaired the mathematics department. He wanted to find out how Earth works so that he can glorify God. His findings, however, contradicted the church’s scriptures, or more specifically, the Bible. Because his work had no backing, he could not prove that his theory was valid and therefore could not confront the Church. His findings were ahead of his time. Nicholas Copernicus was a Polish monk, astronomer, and mathematician. He studied medicine in Padua and later took the chair of mathematics in Rome. However, this pattern of gaining knowledge did not pick up significantly until the Scientific Revolution. In the sixteenth and seventeenth century, the Scientific Revolution started, which concerned the fields of astronomy, mechanics, and medicine. These new scientists used math and observations strongly contradicting religious thought at the time, which was dependent on the Aristotelian-Ptolemy theory. Astronomy was a highly debated topic between scientists and the Roman Catholic Church. The Roman Catholic Church believed that the Earth was the center of the universe and there was a place for all of the gods/zodiacs in it. While the Roman Catholic Church believed that the earth was the center of the universe, Nicolaus Copernicus’s discovered that the Earth actually was one of the planets hat revolved around the sun. “For, in the first place, they are so uncertain about the motion of the sun and moon that they cannot establish and observe a constant length even for the tropical year. (Document 1)” The church belief did not make sense because it was wrong. They were going off wrong information that they could not establish a constant year, which confuses people. In document 2, “The Church taught that Earth was placed by God in the middle of the universe… Copernicus reasoned that indeed, stars, the earth, and other planets revolved around the sun” clearly states the difference between the Church’s teachings and Copernicus’ new theory. This was the issue. This new theory confused people because it was so different than the information they were previously taught by the Church. Scientists, like Galileo or Kepler, started to research and continue supporting Copernicus and his ideas. Many discoveries due to this idea proved that the Church was wrong- which caused disagreements between the scientists and the Church.
The Scientific Revolution was a time of improvements in medicine, knowledge of the body, and knowledge of the universe. People questioned nature and what was taught by the Church. Sir Issac Newton developed the laws of gravity when an apple fell from a tree, Robert Boyle distinguished between elements and compounds, and Andreas Vesalius made the first accurate detailed study of human anatomy. The most revolutionary theory is seen in Document C. Greek astronomer Ptolemy said that the universe was geocentric, the earth is at the center of the universe. It agreed with what was taught by the Church and was accepted by all. However Copernicus said the universe was heliocentric, the sun is at the center of the universe and the earth revolved around it. Another important figure in the Scientific Revolution was Galileo Galilei. He was an Italian born professor of mathematics who had a great interest in the workings of the universe. Galileo served as a professor at the University of Padua, and it was during this time that he began to question the accuracy of the Churches representation of the world. Galileo’s approach towards knowledge was much different then the afore mentioned Copernicus. Where as Copernicus presented his finding to the mercy of the church, Galileo wrote his conclusions and left the Roman Catholic Church interpret them as they chose. The very nature of his findings pitted him as an opponent of the church.
The Catholic Church played an important role at the time when all the works in which the movement of the earth was admitted, Catholics were forbidden to teach, and even read, the Copernican theories. The “Copernican Theory” modeled some problems of enormous importance for Christian’s obviously theological nature. Leaders like Martin Luther and John Calvin told us that Scripture brandished against Nicolaus Copernicus and provoked repression against its followers, but generally abandon the fight Protestantism once the “Theories of Copernicus” were confirmed with indisputable evidence. In this paper, I will first evaluate the history about how “Copernican Theory” and its model of the earth came into existence. I will also analyze the “Copernican Theory” in light of Churches idea of the earth being flat. I will ultimately argue that Nicolaus Copernicus played an important role in the history of Philosophy of Science.
The Scientific Revolution was when modern science was essentially established, which came along with the major scientific discoveries took place at the time. Some major scientists that contributed to this major era include Nicholas Copernicus, Tycho Brahe, Galileo Galilei, and Isaac Newton. The scientific revolution took place following the Renaissance, from the mid-1500’s until about 1700. This revolution took place throughout Europe. This occurred because, following the Renaissance and the reformation, people became very curious and wanted to understand how the Earth worked. It was almost as if, being that this occurred after the reformation, that they wanted to either confirm or refute the church’s claims. The significance of the scientific revolution was one of great proportions, it changed mankind’s understanding the importance of science, and of how the Earth and solar system function.
The Scientific Revolution was an era where Francis Bacon, Galileo Galilei. Nicolaus Copernicus, and Johannes Kepler challenged the status quo, and where many discoveries that would change the way people thought about everything including the universe were made. Before the Scientific Revolution happened, many Europeans only believed in what the church said, but the revolution unveil new answers based on science; totally the opposite of what the church had adopted in earlier years. This period became the foundation of thinking in a different way, and the Enlightenment relied on those new perspectives to expand other theories that would forever change life.
