The Reversal of Traditions in Shrek
In traditional fairy tales ogres are man-eating beast. The prince usually rescues the princess; they marry and live happily ever after. How do the makers of 'shrek' use presentational devices to reverse this tradition to reveal the ogre as good and the prince as evil?
In this essay I am going to analyse the characters of shrek and Lord Farquaad, and write about how filmmakers use different camera angles, lighting, music and setting to create an unusual fairy tale. The giant in jack and the beanstalk is what we expect of giants/ogres.

If kids were watching it then they would think the scene in the chamber they might get a bit scared but then the film eases the tension by adding jazzy music and colours.
They are using different types of traditional fairy tales i.e. Pinocchio when he says, " I'm not a puppet I'm a real boy". At the start of shrek it starts like a traditional fairy tale until shrek's hand appears and rips out a page of a book and then rap music starts playing.
In traditional fairy tales princes are meant to be brave, tall, strong and handsome but Lord Farquaad is small, ugly, scared, and weak, Lord Farquaad is not traditional because he is a nasty and evil character like when he is torturing the ginger bread man, plus he sends all the fairy tale creatures to shrek's swamp.
He has an evil side when he sends shrek to rescue the princess from the dragons keep instead of going himself. When we first meet Lord Farquaad he is in the torture chamber and its very dull and the guards are dressed in black so it sets a scary and dull scene.
Before Lord Farquaad asked shrek to rescue the princess he asks the best soldiers in the land to fight each other and the winner gets to kill the dragon but if they fail then the runner up would try, instead of going to try and rescue herself. This is his frightened and weak side of Lord Farquaad.

The tradition of telling fairy tales to children effects not only the listener but also the reader. Maria Tatar, in her book Off with Their Heads!, analyzes how fairy tales instill and reaffirm cultural values and expectations in their audience . Tatar proposes that fairy tales fall into three different tale-types: cautionary tales, exemplary stories, and reward- and- punishment tales. These three types portray different character traits as desirable and undesirable. Due to the tale’s varying literary methods it can change the effectiveness of the tale’s pedagogical value. In Tatar’s opinion, all of these tales are similar in the way they attempt to use punishment, reward, and fear to encourage or discourage certain behaviors. In the cautionary fairy tale “The Virgin Mary’s Child”, the use of punishment and fear to discourage certain behaviors is enhanced by the Christian motifs and values employed by the tale. These literary devices encourage the audience to reflect on and internalize the lessons that are presented in the fairy tale.
Another type of translation technique used in Shrek series by Wierzbięta is allusion, a reference to a particular event, person, thing, piece of literature or art. For instance, the authors of Shrek made allusions to a number of fairy tales, like Cinderella or Sleeping Beauty, that Polish audience is also familiar with and for that reason they will be able to understand them and fully appreciate their entertaining function. The allusion to the popular film productions, like Mission Impossible or Baywatch are also noticeable in the whole series. The majority of such allusions in Shrek is rooted in the visual rather than aural aspect of the film and in consequence, is not of translator’s concern. However, when it comes to the verbal

People have always watched fairytales at a very young age, growing up to believe in them. Some watched them to obtain some kind illusion, for pure entertainment, and others for the sake of love. However, not every fairytale has a purpose of giving us an illusion, of entertaining us, or making us believe in love. Shrek is not a typical fairytale. Scene: This scene in the film comes just after the house has been picked up in the twister. Dorothy's house has been lifted up into the sky and suddenly dropped back down to earth in the middle of the Land of Oz. In the scene itself, Dorothy leaves her home to see that she is "Not in Kansas anymore," and finds the new and amazing world of the munchkin city in front of her. She also meets Gwendela the good witch as her journey in Oz begins.
Comparing Little Red Riding Hood folktales is a multi tasks operation, which includes many elaborations on the many aspects of the story. Setting, plot, character origin, and motif are the few I chose to elaborate solely on. Although the versions vary, they all have the motif trickery, the characters all include some sort of villain with a heroin, the plot concludes all in the final destruction or cease of the villain to be, and, the setting and origins of the versions vary the most to where they are not comparable but only contrastable, if one can say that origins and settings are contrastable.
The Wizard of Oz is an early film but editing is used quite a bit. First off, the absence of color in the beginning and the ending of the film. This sets an overall feeling of Dorothy being home. Next the film turns to color once Dorothy dreams of being in a different world, the color, yet again, set an overall mood for Dorothy in this new world “Over the rainbow.” The first steps of Dorothy being in the world of The Wizard of Oz gives off an example of inside and outside editing. The shot begins with a close up of Dorothy’s face and the camera slowly moves out to show everything else around Dorothy, which was the start of the yellow brick road and Munchkin land. After the viewer see all of that, the camera moves back in to Dorothys face when she says that they are not in Kansas anymore. My favorite character in this book would have to be Peter. He was a little bit of a tough guy yet timid, but wasn’t afraid to fight for his siblings lives. Peter was the oldest amongst his brother and two sisters and was most likely the brains and brawn of the bunch. In this story, Peter has to fight off a wolf to test his courage or, in Aslan’s words, win his spurs. He returns victorious and is knighted by the lion called Aslan. His brother Edmund, a very mischievous boy and a bother to his sisters Lucy and Susan, looks up to Him though he never admits to it. Peter was definitely the highlight of this book.
She is harsh and demeaning in her words, telling him he “always does this” and she “can’t believe he hasn’t learned this yet”. He lays the puppet down and hangs his head as he walks slowly towards another room where the voice seems to be coming from. The viewers are now left with a saddened emotion as the music has become depressing at this point because the violin has changed its tone to a slow tempo now. As the boy leaves the room the puppet slowly rises to stand looking extremely sad because he has lost a playmate. The next scene is the young boy sitting on his bed with a blackened eye and you see the puppet enter the room and approach the boy. He picks it up and holds it snuggly against his chest as if that’s the only thing that loves him. SFHSA uses pathos in this scene to connect with viewers and make them feel sorry for the young boy.
Growing up, most people read fairytales such as “Cinderella” and “Little Red Riding Hood”. These stories set up some sort of expectation for what life will be like. However, fairytales are just as messed up as life. DreamWorks created the movie Shrek to make fun of fairytale’s social prejudge and idealism. Shrek uses reversal and irony to create a satire about the flaws of fairytales.

The screen then changes to a picture of a cartoon kid and dog in a picture frame and we are told that this is a Tim Burton production early on as this is likely to engage the audience as he is rather famous for strange excellent films. Once upon a time, there was a literary genre commonly know as fairy tales. They were mystical and wonderful and a child’s fantasy. These fairy tales were drastically misunderstood throughout many centuries, however. They endured a hard life of constant changing and editing to fit what the people of that time wanted. People of our own time are responsible for some of the radical changes endured by this undeserved genre. Now, these fairy tales had a young friend named Belle. Belle thought she knew fairy tales very well, but one day she found out just how wrong she was.
Could civilization live a normal and stable life, without any rules and orders to obey? Could you picture, New York City, with no laws to follow and everyone doing as they please? Just imagine the disasters that we will experience. In the novel, Lord of the Flies, written by William Golding, we see how each individual character reacts differently to the exposure of complete freedom from an organized society. Also, awe see how this separation from a structural society causes chaos among all these different characters.

Disney motion pictures have depicted their classic fairytales by painting picture of princess with a loving parent, a dead parent, and a wonderful outlook on life with just the hope of dreams coming true.
