The Renaissance period is known for the revival of the classical art and intellect born in ancient Greece and Rome. The Renaissance is also a time that is marked by growth, exploration, and rebirth. The Italian Renaissance started in Florence and progressively made its way into Venice and then into the great city of Rome. During the Renaissance, Rome was home to some of the most renowned works of art and the finest architectural masterpieces in the world - too many that still holds true today. Along with the delicate architecture and grand artistry, Rome was also home to a mixture of people and cultures. It is in this cultural context and through the book A Street Life in Renaissance Rome: A Brief History with Documents, that understanding how men, woman, and specifically Jews and Christians lived in Rome becomes important to better understand this period of renewal. Men who were Catholic in Rome during this period, by far, had the easiest part. For the most part, they had jobs, they were able to hold property and they could vote. They were also the heads of the households, the owners of businesses, and often could be seen in brothels. If a man were to go pay for a prostitute nothing was ever said, men could sleep around with as many women as he desires. Men were also seen less at fault than women. For example, in Document 11, it presents the testimony from a rape trial. The outcomes of this trial are still unknown, however, and an important piece is in the preface when

The Italian and Northern Europe Renaissances were both an important mark in history by changing the ideals of life, thought, culture, and art of the people’s of this time. In this paper I will explain the motive for change in these cultures, including the similarities and differences of the two cultures.
Italy can be looked at as the home of the renaissance and consequently the immergence of great art. Artists such as Michelangelo, Botticelli, Da Vinci, and Raphael are some of the greats and are looked at for standards. But what about the artists whose lives are mysteries, and their works that were influenced by the greats? These artists hold just as much importance in the history of art as do the artist’s whose names can be recalled off the top of an average person’s head. During the sixteenth century things began to change in the art world, and that change was the Baroque. This new style of art brought a revolution to how subject matter was painted, it brought upon “… a radical reconsideration of art and its purposes…” (249) and how artists of all ranks could learn to paint the up and coming style of Baroque.
Florence played a HUGE role in the Renaissance. The Renaissance was the rebirth of most of Europe and most of the changes first occurred in Florence, Italy. During the Renaissance, Florence was the exciting place to be. Florence was a self-governed, independent city-state. Also, they were on the the wealthiest places in Europe. Florence was made up of 2 guilds. The first guild was all the wealthy men, and the 2nd guild were all the buisness men. It was truly amazing!
What did art represent in the Italian Renaissance? Explain the significance of the art in the Renaissance - using examples.
Starting the fourteenth century, until the seventh century a period of new ideas spread in Europe, this period is known as the Renaissance, the word itself means rebirth, or reawakening. This word is perfect for describing this period as it was the rebirth of art, and culture in Europe, from the dark ages. This period brought many new changes in the world of art and sciences. Painter such as Leonardo de Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, Donatello, and so many more came out during this period of time. While art is normally seen during the Renaissance, there were many scientific breakthroughs during the time that can be seen in the arts during the Renaissance.
The importance of the Italian renaissance was very important to western civilization for many reasons. For one, it brought Western Europe out of the Medieval time period and into the modern era, hence the name Renaissance meaning rebirth, which was a rebirth of the way humans began to understand themselves (Norton, p.56). They began to teach and learn about the understanding of high culture, freedom of religion and the importance of enjoying life without questioning the afterlife unlike the north of the Alps. Finance became a big play in changing people’s fortunes that enabled them to support and grow the art renaissance in Italy (Norton, p.56) and being there was no king to build up a government and no pope to encourage or force Christianity on the people, secularism became the new “religion” of Florence. Where there was greatness for people in the Middle ages who undertook lives of poverty, there was greatness in the Italian renaissance for those that achieved “virtue” financial richness and hedonism which was not the case outside of Italy. The “rebirth” also brought about the idea, the great man shaped his own destiny in a world governed by fortune (Norton, p.59) which was unheard of before. In addition, from Italy and especially cities like Florence came a production of outstanding scholars, writers, and artists becoming a city that would be influential for years to come and that would bring a period of individual growth never seen before. Famous families were
First of all, it is important to understand what the Renaissance period was all about and what it encumbered. The Renaissance period (French: ‘Rebirth’) is a progressive cultural movement that lasted for roughly 3 centuries, from the 14th to the 17th (roughly 1330- 1600), and is often referred to as ‘the bridge between the Middle Ages and a Modern Era’ (*1). The ‘Rebirth’ of a society, specifically Italy, was recognition of the past but also that it was separate from the present in terms of belief or ideology for example. This meant that a transitional phase occurred as past
In the late 14th century to the 16th century, the Italian Renaissance was taking place and moving from the Middle Ages at a time when the Catholic Church was indomitable to a period called The Renaissance. After this “rebirth” in Italy began, it started spreading to other countries to then produce a French Renaissance, an English Renaissance, and so on. Italy served a sort of birth place for the Renaissance in European culture. During this time period, more and more people were placing humans as the center of life and art, and the way they viewed every day concepts and ideas were becoming more complex. They started questioning things that were never questioned in past and exploring ideals that were never once explored. The people started breaking from the mold that society had set for them, and some faced repercussions because of this. The people who were practicing this new way of thinking viewed it as a time of powerful wisdom and classical learning after such a cultural decline.
What was the Renaissance and why did it happen? Italian life in the 14th and 15th centuries was lived among the vast ruins of the ancient Roman Empire. The cruelty and barbarism of Rome
Nyctophobia; the fear of the dark. However, it’s not exactly the fear of darkness itself, but rather, what could be lurking within it. Now, the Dark Ages weren’t actually “dark”, but it was a time of rapid decline in Europe in which historians don’t have much information. After the fall of the Roman Empire, Europe was thrown into a never ending battle of hardships. From the Black Plague to the loss of beloved heroes and heroines, the country really was left in the dark, until a flicker of hope emerged offering a new beginning: the Renaissance. The Renaissance lasted from the 14th to the 17th century and was an era of “rebirth” in European history. During this period, culture throughout Europe underwent a dramatic reformation where classic
When contemplating on the Renaissance and its place in history, immediately reflections of Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, Michelangelo’s David, sculptures of human anatomy, philosophical treatises on the human condition, and among others populate the mind, but how did this output of great work manage to seemingly appear almost simultaneously? Firstly, the Renaissance -a French word literally meaning “rebirth-” was an age of cultural enrichment and achievement where the arts, sciences, and philosophy flourished largely due to the revival and revisitation of ancient Greek and roman texts. Its period is generally dated from the early 14th to the mid-17th centuries beginning in Italy. Italy spawned the Renaissance due to its great wealth giving
The Italian Renaissance began in the mid-fourteenth century, and was marked by a turn from medieval life and values dominated by the Church toward the philosophical principles of humanism. The Italian people, especially the educated middle class, became interested in individual achievements and emphasized life in this world, as opposed to preparation for life in the next world, which was stressed by religion in the Church. They believed strongly in the potential for individual accomplishment in the arts, literature, politics, and personal life. Individuals began to be encouraged to excel in a wide range of fields and showcase their talents. The pieces of art that represent this period of time are, The Mona Lisa, The Northern Doors by Lorenzo Ghiberti, and lastly, David by Donatello.
This world has become a realm full of astonishing art ranging from the Stone Age, Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Greek and Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine and Islamic, Middle Ages, Early and High Renaissance, Venetian and Northern Renaissance, Baroque, Neoclassical… to our modern art. Each age is either influenced by the previous one or artists explore whole new concepts and innovations to complete something that has never been done before. As new civilizations rise new concepts and techniques for art are formed with them, such as the iconography, compositions, and media used. Throughout all these ages art has been a huge part but none have prioritized art as much as the Renaissance, also known as the rebirth. The Renaissance was the time of the great revival of art, literature, and learning in Europe (started in Florence). The rebirth began in the 14th century and extended to the 17th century, some say that it was marking the transition from the medieval to the modern world. Artists developed their own new innovations that are still used in contemporary art. The development of linear perspective and other techniques of achieving a natural and realistic painting were greatly used.
During the fourteenth-century, Italy went through a drastic cultural change known as the Italian Renaissance. Self proclaimed humanists announced they were moving past the Middle Ages and beginning a time of rebirth. Humanists were devoted to the resurrection of Roman art, literature, architecture, and the love of education. The Italian Renaissance continued to spread through the innovation of the printing press and with the help of wealthy Italian families like the Medici Family. The Medici Family used their power and influence to progress artistry during the Renaissance. Cosimo de Medici became the first ruler of Florence from the Medici Family and he and his descendants ruled throughout most of the Italian Renaissance. They used their admiration and acquired talents to aid the advancement of the Italian Renaissance, thus leading Western Europe to engage in the revival of classical antiquity until The Renaissance’s end in the seventeenth century.
