PHN Shadowing Reflection and Self Analysis
1. In preparing for the shadowing clinical experience I have read and reviewed from Garcia, Schager & Schoon (2014) chapter one, chapter two, chapter three, chapter six, chapter seven, and chapter thirteen. I also previously attended an orientation to Washington County Public Health on September 19, 2016. Also, I have read material for Washington County Public Health policies. After this material was completed I was assigned to a local public health nurse that was close to my community to shadow. I contacted the individuals and communicated what information I was looking for in this clinical experience, when and where to meet, and what the dress code would be for the experience.
2. Partaking in the shadowing activities I was present for a full day from 8am-3:30pm. There was one visit early in the morning for a home safety visit. During this visit there was also a child protection agency visiting at the same time. My public health nurse (PHN) briefed me on the case before attending the family visit, explained what forms were used for the visit, and then I just stood in a corner of the apartment and observed what the nurse was doing. I also observed the interaction of the family with all the people that were present. The second visit was right after the first visit. This was interesting because there were multiple police vehicle handling a situation at the same apartment complex, and learned that this was not something new the

Going into this job shadowing experience I did not expect to get hands on experience the way I did on some days. On some days I got to go in patients rooms and interact and make conversation with the patient. The nurse guided me, and showed me what exactly her day was like and what she was going to do with the patient that day. Some patients were better off than others which was very sad to see but is also reality. Once I get a job in this field I have to realize that.
Over winter break on Thursday, December 21 I shadowed Officer Erin Marcotte at the Omaha Police Department at the Southeast Precinct. When I shadowed I was known as the ride along. This is what the department calls anyone that is shadowing or experiencing a day in the life of a police officer. Before the ride along I spoke to the officers about why I decided to shadow there and things that they did in their everyday life. After chatting, I sat in on roll call. This is where the head officer of their department sits down with his or her team and they discuss the previous days work and what everyone’s routes are for the day and or night. During my ride along I was able to sit in the passenger seat of the car. The inside of the car was intriuging
The aim of the reflective essay is to highlight my own personal development skills that I have developed during first semester of my module. However, in this report I will make sure my learning ability phase and what this module has allowed me to work and understand in improving my personal skills and purpose. My major aim is to develop and assess an in depth range of my personal traits as a student in order to endorse my future development plan.
The areas of productiveness in this session for me included the paraphrasing and minimal encouragers. Throughout this session I felt that my paraphrasing was clear and concise. It allowed the client to think about what he had said, while being able to provide me with feedback and allowed for the conversation to flow naturally.
I have always enjoyed writing, and I believed writing was a subject I was naturally good at. I turned in papers that were still rough drafts, I did not evaluate my sources, nor did I ever take the time to fully understand the prompt. It was not until my first semester of college, in my writing composition course, I realized that I had a lot of work ahead of me to be as good a writer as I thought I was. In the writing course, the students were required to compose several essays using different methods to help progress on the course objectives. The work in this portfolio demonstrates that I have used the methods of synthesis and evaluation of sources to advance my critical thinking skills and develop personal responsibility. Though I have
When arranging my shadow experience, I looked to my supervisor for information regarding who to contact on the outreach team. I was given the name of an Occupational Therapist who could accommodate my learning experience, in which I emailed to set up an appropriate time upon approval from their manager. Due to time constraints, I was given the opportunity to do two home visits in the morning with clients that had been on the seventh-floor as inpatients. This was chosen to give me the experience of transition from the hospital to their home and the gaps within the system. Before going on my shadow experience, I made sure to get best practices and the job description of the individual being shadow’s job to help assist pre-job shadow time. The
Reflection is the examination of personal thoughts and actions. For practitioners especially nurses, it means focusing on how they interact with their peers and with the environment to obtain a clearer picture of their own behavior. Kanuka (2002) writes that reflection is an essential component of understanding complex problems, issues, and concepts. Albeit meanings, patterns, and purpose become clear. Elder, Evans and Nizette (2009) say that allowing self-reflection to guide our nursing practice can improve outcomes because a strong sense of self-enables us to deal with problems better and even with other individuals. Looking back at my group before and after the debate process, I realized that the group had members coming from diverse backgrounds, had different opinions, personalities, and belief systems. It was, therefore, imperative to create an environment between the team members that would allow for trust, collaboration, harmony, teamwork, respect, non-judgmental and open to every group members opinions. This would limit confrontation and allow the team to work cohesively and together so as to avoid any disagreements that would arise. Tuckman’s theory of group development was used in our discussion of group development. According to Tuckman (1965), group process development goes through various stages namely forming, norming, performing and adjournment. The group consisted of five members, two opposing the motion while two were for the motion and one person was to be

What concepts, principles, or ideas that you have learned, do you think you will remember the most after you leave this class?
Before taking this course my writing styles and habits were very different. I was the typical procrastinator because I would wait until the night before a paper was due to start it. This did not allow me enough time to properly proofread everything, which resulted in getting points deducted for simple grammatical errors that could have been avoided if I would have had the time to proofread. My writing styles have many strengths and weaknesses and I have been able to improve my writing because of them. I have learned from my strengths and weaknesses how to become a better writer.
During the course of the quarter, I feel that I have progressed somewhat. I've gained a lot of knowledge on rhetorical strategies and how to present arguments effectively. In the writings I have written, I feel that each writing works towards meeting the course goals. Logos, ethos, and pathos were strategies and ideas we were introduced to (if not already in the past) and were built upon throughout the quarter. The knowledge gained over the course of the quarter weren't only those three types of appeals. Rhetorical strategies like proposals helped reinforce the course and using rhetorical analysis in different situations have become easier throughout the quarter. I believe that I have made sufficient progress towards becoming a better
Article Reflections on the Self: A Case Study of a Prosopagnosic Patient (2008) and Movement Cues Aid Face Recognition in Developmental Prosopagnosia (2015) give a review on visual agnosia. These article’s main focus is on prosopagnosia. Sigmund Freud coined the term visual agnosia back in 1891. Visual agnosia is the ability to see an image and store it, but there is an impairment in visually recognizing the specific object. There are a plethora of subtypes of visual agnosia, which include prosopagnosia (the inability to recognize faces), achromatopsia (the inability to distinguish different colors), landmark agnosia (the inability to recognize buildings and places), etc. If one suffers from visual agnosia they can have multiple subtypes of associative agnosia. In the review case study, The Man Who Mistook his Wife for a Hat (Sacks, 1995), Dr. P was diagnosed with Prosopagnosia, Landmark Agnosia, and Simultagnosia.
