In addition to stereotyping other cultures, low-context and high-context cultures was also a topic addressed in the book and in class. As it is represented in The Joy Luck Club, The Red Umbrella also shows a difference or clash between low-context and high-context cultures. There can be difficulties when one from a high-context culture begins to live in a low-context culture setting. These difficulties are addressed in The Red Umbrella and The Joy Luck Club. The first example of a transition from a high-context to a low-context culture is addressed in The Red Umbrella. Lucia’s mother never allowed Lucia to cut her hair short, and she respected this rule. In the book she provides this example when her adoptive mother, Mrs. Baxter, offered to cut her hair. Lucia states “She …show more content…
Then, coming after, Lucia had just gotten off the phone with her mother, who was informing her not to grow up too fast, meaning, not to wear her skirts too short, no makeup, and no highheels. Lucia could not take this prevention of growing up anymore. Addressing Mrs. Baxter, Lucia declared “ ‘I want you to cut my hair...short. Really short’” (Gonzalez 193). The two quotes presented are ideal examples of an individual, from a high-context culture, being raised by one of a low-context culture. Mrs. Baxter, unlike Lucia’s mother, cut Lucia’s hair for her instead of denying her wishes. A second example of transitioning from a high-context culture to a low context culture includes the specific bonds between a mother and her daughter. The reading, titled “High-context Cultures and Low-Context Cultures, addressed in class, explains the distinct differences between the two cultures. When presenting information about high-context cultures, the reading informs “ The bonds among people are very strong in a high-context culture” ( Unknown 1). The close bond among individuals can be lossed due to the different beliefs between one born in a low-context culture and one born in a high-context
The book The red Umbrella, written by Christina Diaz Gonzalez, is set during the Cuban Revolution mostly in two towns, Puerto Mijares and Grand Island Nebraska. The author of this book made a careful choice in where the setting will take place because it has great importance in the meaning of this book (GOGB NEW #2). In this story you will read about a family that faced many hardships during the revolution. The family had to make some very hard and life-changing decisions. The family sent their children away in hopes that they can have a better life. Frankie and Lucy, the two children, had to lean a whole new language and take care of each other because their parents are not in this new country that they had traveled to. Frankie and Lucy were
As a young man, while living and working with various ethnicities, I learned that certain elements of social location cannot be altered and this can affect our reality. It has been my personal experience that the social location of a particular group of people may generate a very different set of values and beliefs for them to a group in a different social location. Thus, this principle can help us to better understand our worldview and its effects on the way we view and interpret other cultures.
In her essay, “Context” (1994), Dorothy Allison states that knowing a person well and deeply depends on and requires personal knowledge of their upbringing and social life. The essay was published as a memoir to reflect on people’s perception about others. Dorothy employs flashbacks and comparison in order to express her opinions on understanding, trusting and judging a person. She uses flashback and comparison to show that context provides a varied angle about a person. She further argues that, when not properly understood, it can easily breed rivalry between people from varied social backgrounds. Dorothy writes her essay to a general audience and expresses her opinions about context, upbringing environment, and a social group having a fundamental role in a person’s character.
Claireece’s used her culture to acculturate from the dominant culture. This was practiced at home for reasons of self preservation. She took on traits of her mother to appease her and attempt to lessen the episodes of abuse. In society, Claireece’s used her culture to isolate herself. She often commented about loneliness and feelings of isolation.
In Dorothy Allison’s essay, Context (1994) she suggests that growing up in different a social class may have a negative effect on the perception others think of you, especially the person you are in a relationship with. Through the usage of anticlimactic sequences, ethos and nostalgia, Allison expresses there occurring terror in her mind that her lover will see her as inferior once she meets her family. The use of Allison’s emotional tone helps to convey the author’s purpose which is to inform readers of classism to understand the authors embarrassment of bringing her lover home to meet her family . The authors intended audience are induvial of all social-economic classes.

In the story The White Umbrella by Gish Jen, the narrator throws the white umbrella into the sewer. Even though she wanted the white umbrella it had been a burden for her. It had caused too much damage.
“The Red Umbrella” by Christina Diaz Gonzalez and “ A Band-Aid for 800 Children” by Eli Sastow are both similar and different in many ways. A common theme they both portray is sometimes you have to sacrifice what you have for what you don’t have. The text have both similarities and differences in the theme with the techniques they use.
A strength pertaining to social-psychological theory is the feeling of sharing an important identity to everyday life. Yet, a weakness is how a certain culture behaves and may be
The first example of this is when the narrator is stopped by the police and they said “You’re making people nervous. You don’t fit the profile of the neighborhood." (Alexie). Right after this the narrator is talking about how he is unable to fit into anywhere because of how the culture views native Americans. This is an excellent example of how the culture around the narrator has changed how he thinks about others within his culture.
Cultural Shock: Bruno who is only 8 years old is shifted with the whole family from Barlin to country side as his father was a General in the Nazi military. He was assigned as a command of a Jewish concentration camp in the country side. In Barlin Bruno was used to go to school & play with his friends. He was very happy there. He likes to explore places. He wants to explore the world. He used to play with his friends in his home also. But after shifting from Barlin to country side, he became alone. He didn’t like to read books but after coming to country side he missed his school as well. He also missed his friends. So in Barlin there was a culture but in country side there was another culture. So we can say that this is the concept of cultural
Under the Black Umbrella tells the many captivating stories about the 35 years of Japanese occupation in Korea through both world wars. The memories are all from the perspective of Korean men and women who lived through some or all of it. Many of their stories and the history during that time are influenced by several factors, some of which include their location in Korea or surrounding areas and the government’s involvement in recording history. The Japanese were not all awful to the Koreans, since they were humans all the same, but they committed enough atrocities to have a bad reputation with the Koreans. In attempts to unify, North Koreans employed nationalism and ethnocentrism to fuel their way to become a strong nation again. South Koreans did not rally around such extreme ways and did not utilize their northern brethren’s methods of fear for power. Back then and now, globalization is a part of life and it should not be stifled. Nationalistic thinking will bring about more pain and suffering rather than just trying to coexist. Korea faced many hardships with the Japanese occupation. In recovery to their rule, issues arose when it came to accuracy in history, nationalism, ethnocentrism, and the different roles they all took between the north and the south.
People have different culture backgrounds which are very special to them. Usually families’ tradition and thoughts are affected by their cultural backgrounds. Environment is one of the most important factors in a human’s development. When the term "environment" is used, it refers to factors such as family and cultural tie. In today's society, each individual is living his or her life in different a way than others.' Individual’s life choice is generally controlled, learned, influenced, and raised by the cultural background. “Two kinds’ by Amy Tan and “The Red Convertible” by Louise Erdrich reveal how family is important and precious in culture.
Humans are unique creatures simply due to the fact that every person grows up in a different environment. I know for a fact that the way I grew up is different compared to the way my friends grew up, and it is different compared to how others grew up and will grow up in the past and future. This paper covers the subject of sociocultural context, what it is, how it can impact a child, and how it impacted my own development.
