The Ramones: The Rock Band Of The 1970s

The hippie aesthetic era was an important time in rock and roll during the late 60’s and on into the early 80’s. It was a time were rock had a sense of purpose. They sung about the issues that plagued the country. It was also a time where technology would play an important roll in the sound of music, with the advancement in recording and synthesizer technology (Covach, “The Hippie Aesthetic”). The hippie aesthetic was not immune to the advancement of music. This essay will go over three songs that represent the different aspects of this era. It’ll will review a song that is predominately hippie aesthetic, a song that is a little of both, and finally a song that has no trace of hippie aesthetic.

The Ramones' distorted and fast-paced style was influenced by pop music that the band members grew up listening to in the 1950's and 1960's, such as the Beach Boys, The Who, The Beatles, The Kinks, Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones; and bubblegum acts such as the 1910 Fruitgum Company and Ohio Express.

The radio is turned up as high as it can go. I can hear the ripping guitar solos of Eddie Van Halen. Goose bumps are slowly riding up my back; that is the feeling of Rock ‘N’ Roll. Rock and Roll can be defined as a new wave of music, which later grew into what we call today “Rock Music.”

One very known artist was Pink Floyd that was popular for following one theme throughout an album. Punk Rock started in the 60’s and continued into the 70’s (Pearson). Punk Rock was more upbeat than any music type in the 70’s (Pearson).The band that was considered as the first punk rock band was the Ramones (Pearson). The Ramones started in 1974 and ended in 1996. Funk came from R&B, Jazz, and soul music (Pearson).

The Ramones helped conceive punk rock by mastering a simple but effective sound - a combination of swift grooves, sing-along tunes and deadpan lyrics that achieved a sort of absurd brilliance. The sound influenced thousands of bands, and proved so durable that the Ramones stuck to it for their entire career.

They were like nothing seen or heard before. Their torn clothes and spiked hair sent a visual message that they did not care what others thought. The band was actually put together by Malcolm McLaren, who used the band as an advertisement for his fetish clothing store. Their chains, tight leather, and torn clothes have since been associated with punk.

The sound of can be hear from the idols of Joan Jett, the rhythm guitarist, consisting of Keith Richards, Suzi Quatro and the drummer Sandy West influences, Queen’s Roger Taylor while Gene Simmons can be heard in Jackie Fox’s bass playing. During the summer of 1976, The Runaways and Ramones toured together throughout American. However, there was minimal similarities between the two.

In the early 1990’s a new genre of music and fashion was born amongst the United States. This new statement, called Grunge, quickly spread throughout the United States and became a rapidly growing phenomenon. Nirvana would become the poster child of this culture during the nineties. Nirvana’s front-man, Kurt Cobain would empower the grunge era with his strong lyrics, and dramatic guitar riffs to help popularize this new sound. Before the tragic end of Kurt Cobain, Nirvana would help jump-start a new genre of Indie-rock music, popularize fashion and forever be memorialized as one of the greatest bands of the 1990’s.

Music has been evolving for hundreds of years, leading to major breakthroughs starting in the late 1950s, early 1960s. There are many different types of music genres, which all have different sounds. We have the blues, folk music, classical, country, hip-hop, pop, reggae, and rock and roll. Rock and roll has continued to grow since the 1950s. Some of the most iconic music comes from the 1980s, especially from the hair-bands. Guns N’ Roses, a one of the most popular rock and roll bands ever, produced some of the best rock and roll the world has seen.

It is argued over whether rock n' roll is a counterculture or not because it was widely popular amongst children and adults alike at it’s prime and ultimately did not present any radically different ideas, but what can’t be argued is rock n' roll’s seniority and perfected tone. While there is much to be said about the bands that proudly wear the label punk or rock n' roll as a button on their acid washed jean vests, something has to be said for the history and subculture that defines each respective genre. Punk refutes social attitudes that have been perpetuated through willful ignorance of human nature, and rock n' roll is just a trend that people followed because of it’s attractive ideal. If it were not for punk, voices as strong and influential as Billie Joe Armstrong or Sid Vicious would never had made an impact on millions of angry citizens who were surfeited of systematic oppression and capitalistic ideals. Counterculture has always been political and driven by the underground, whether it be the Lolita girls of Japan, the Kontrkul’tura movement in Russia, the Nambassa lifestyle in New Zealand, or the Basque Radical Rock movement in Spain, but nothing quite compares to the raw grit and blood that goes into being punk, the ultimately universal counterculture.

Another diverse style and philosophies of punk culture would be the Ramones. The Ramones, from Forest Hills, Queens, helped invent a simple but effective sound of punk rock. Their sound is influenced thousands of bands and establish their influence on genre of music. The Ramones were influence by the style of The Velvet Underground and it helps define punk rock sound. The Ramones were active from 1974-1996. Ramones style was very simple and stripped down lyrics, with the usage of four chords for a simple and catchy melody and revolutionary sounds. The group simplicity reflected in their image by no makeups, or light shows when performing. The groups did target dark subject matter like The Velvet Underground but they also brought high-energy

The quarrymen eventually became “the beatles”and also became on of the biggest pop boy bands in america, new england, and britain.The band was so popular that at every concert the girls would get so excited and thrilled they were performing that they would pee themselfs and scream so loud they would lose their voices halfway through the concert. The boys in the band had started doing drugs and the public began to think they were strange.
