Belize Guatemala Territorial Dispute Should we agree on taking the Belize-Guatemala territorial dispute to the ICJ? The international Court of Justice commonly known as the World Court. It is the central judicial branch of the United Nations, where the Court’s role is to resolve legal disputes and to give consultative opinions on legal questions (International court of Justice). The Belize-Guatemala territorial dispute is an unresolved bi-national territorial dispute between both countries, neighbours in Central America. Guatemala has been claiming Belize territory in whole or in part since 1940. Belize is an independent country that is rich in resources, and this is why more than ever Guatemala is claiming Belize’s territory; therefore history has been made for many centuries regarding this issue and if it is agreed in going to the ICJ there would most likely be some advantages and disadvantage, but still there are Belizeans that agree on going to the ICJ while others opposed from going. This few Belizeans that agree on going to the ICJ have their own opinions regarding this issue, and they share their opinions and reasons that makes them think that going to the ICJ would be the best decision that a Belizean can undertake. Both Guatemala and Belize are two Central American countries that have been embroiled in a territorial dispute over the land and boundaries since the 19th century (Ambergris Caye, Belize). There was once that Guatemala had claimed all of modern-day Belize as its territory, but today claims involves only the southern half of the country and its islands.
