“On August 6, 1945, a single bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, killing 80,000 people immediately and about 60,000 more within six months. On August 9, a second atomic bomb that ultimately killed about 70,000 people was dropped in Nagasaki.” These two bombs destroyed Japan really bad. There is a big debate about whether United States should drop the atomic bomb on Japan. In my opinion, I felt that United States made the right decision by dropping the bomb. The reasons I chose are retaliation, Potsdam Declaration, and saving American lives. Pearl Harbor was the surprise attack by Japan in Hawaii on December 7, 1941. Japan destroyed American naval vessels, battleships, airplanes. 2,000 Americans soldiers and sailors died from the surprise invasion. Japan deserved the atomic bomb because they weren't innocent. Pearl Harbor was attacked by Japan so there should not be any questioning about the bomb. American lives were destroyed, so the bombs were basically “payback” from America. But President Truman was aware of Japan’s civilians even women and children. “I have told the Sec. of War, Mr. Stimson, to use it so that military objectives and soldiers and sailors are the target and not women and children.”#3 This means women and children weren't the target, even though women help make machines and weapons for war. …show more content…

It allowed Japan to get the opportunity to surrender. “We-the President of the United States… have conferred and agree that Japan shall be given an opportunity to end this war.”#4 Another thing is Japanese military were able to go home with peace. “The Japanese military forces, after being completely disarmed, shall be permitted to return to their homes with the opportunity to lead peaceful and productive lives.”#4 No other choice could be picked. “The alternative for Japan is prompt and utter destruction.”#4 This means Japan was given clear, simple, and fair rules for
