“Sovereign citizens are anti-government extremists who believe that even though they physically reside in the United States, they are separate or “sovereign” from the United States. As a result, they feel they do not have to answer to any government authority, including courts, taxing entities, motor vehicle departments or law enforcement” (Dempsey & Forst, 2016, p.534). Sovereign Citizens are domestic terrorists who have committed crimes of violence against law enforcement officers. As a veteran police officer, I would give my rookie officers some valuable informational tips about Sovereign Citizens, and how to approach them with precaution before exiting the patrol vehicle. Since my rookie is in training, I will advise that he/she back me up and pay close attention while I perform the traffic stop because Sovereign Citizens are anti-government extremists. I do not want to aggravate the defendant driver because from …show more content…
At my discretion, I know that the offense will continue because Sovereign Citizens are anti-government extremist. In this case, if the Sovereign Citizen provide me with all the correct items like a legit driver’s license, not to be suspended and legit vehicle insurance, and nevertheless, that I am given by the driver, accurate personal information and address, I will issues a misdemeanor citation after checking NCIC. I would conduct a “Field Interview” as a precaution for other law enforcement agencies encounters. If the Sovereign Citizen refuse to comply, then I would make a physical arrest. The arrest offenses would be for obstructing a police officer, driving without a license, no vehicle insurance, and no valid registration. Also, I will tow the vehicle because I have the reason to believe the offense is going to continue, for no vehicle insurance and I would place a hold on the vehicle for
Second, police officers are caught in a dilemma when making a traffic stop. Chances are that drivers stopped try to injure or even kill the officer. Yet, officers are expected to maintain friendliness at best or neutral at worst. Police officers lower their guard when they approach the driver in a friendly manner. If the officer adopts a continuous friendly approach, they may find themselves attacked by hostile citizens or worst, killed because of losing one's guard. Though, the friendly approach has its risks, the defensive approach has its consequences. When a police officer approaches the driver with a guarded attitude, the officer will most likely forget the goal of cooperating with the driver. Instead
When you ask an average American what is sovereign nation or sovereign citizens extremist, most will likely answer you that they have no idea what that is. Law enforcement officers across the country are experiencing a growing number of contacts with Sovereign Citizens. Many local, states and federal law enforcement have been having problems with this group so call sovereign nation group. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) classifies sovereign citizens as domestic terrorists, which are scattered across the United States of America. Sovereign citizens are anti-government extremists who believe that even though they physically reside in this country, they are separate or “sovereign” from the United States (FBI, 2011).
In this essay I will discuss the pros and the cons of the Patriot Act, how it affected the lives of US citizens and the world, and whether or not it fits within our democratic form of government. The Patriot Act was a rapidly drafted and approved Act of Congress which was intended to increase the security of US citizens by combatting terrorism. Although granting increased security to an extent, the Act was and still is extremely controversial due to certain parts of the Act limiting the freedoms of American citizens. The Patriot Act enhanced the government’s ability to spy on their own people, and with far fewer restrictions, so many people were and still are disgusted, but many others completely agree with it. Millions of people, billions across the world have a historical trend of being happy to sacrifice their freedoms for increased security. The controversy lies with how more safe are you in comparison to how much of your freedom you have to give up, and that compromise is weighed vastly different for individuals across the world. Did the Patriot Act save enough lives to warrant what it cost, or did it inhibit the lives of too many people to be allowed to continue. The answer will always be disputed and weighing each side will be a very difficult task.
Citizens United is an organization that wants to restore citizen control of the United States government. They want to restore the America back to a free nation that has a limited government. The way that they achieve this is to produces television commercials, web advertisements, and documentary films. In 2009, Citizen United sued the Federal Election Commission. Citizens United stated that it was illegal to limit a corporation from spending its treasury money to support or attack candidates in presidential elections. This led to outside groups such as the Super PACs to contribute unlimited amounts of money. Super PACs are an independent political action committee. They could raise unlimited sums of money from corporations, and other individuals.
Democracy is known as a system of government when all eligible people of a state can voice their own opinions as well as elect representatives. Democracy is not once mentioned in The Declaration of Independence. Pros of a democracy are, its by the people and for the people. Democracy is meant for everybody to be eligible to vote and they are able to vote. The people are also able to participate in what they think, feel , and voice about the political, social, and economic issues that are presented to them. It's in the people's best interest not just the governments. The goal is to find solutions with decision-makers best interest. The main goal is to is find solutions that are best for the people and regulate conflicts between states and government. A democracy imposes equality, the people's votes carry the same weight, which makes all individuals to be heard and make them feel as if their opinion is important. Other than in elections of the state a citizens
As of current you can only drive unaffiliated to the DMV with at extreme inconvenience, not only due to the fact that structure of our society pushes pack so strongly, but also because those who choose to travel freely in this manner are often regarded as members of the sovereign citizens movement. Sovereignty by definition means to possess supreme power, to identify as a sovereign citizen simply means that you hold the powers granted by our constitution;
My fellow congress men and women, sanctuary cities have been a danger to our citizens for years. They are defined by the department of justice as a local governmental entity that does not repost that there are aliens in custody. Some cities include Louisville Kentucky, Springfield Oregon, West Palm Beach Florida, and many others stated by the Center for Immigration Studies. By decreasing the funding of these cities we can surely reduce the damage these cities are having on the normal populations. Damage including making a dangour environment for citizens, the cities are breaking federal laws, and the trade off between illegal immigrants or citizens in poverty.
After the American Revolution, the US was in deep trouble. The Articles of Confederation had failed, and the nation needed a new form of government. The first option was using the Constitution. The Constitution provided a quick solution for the nation. It gave the national government the power to act in place of the people (i.e. the government would be representing the people). America would be a democracy. The people would be able to elect leaders into the government who are smart, strong, and will best represent what the people want. This democratic form of government has proven to work within individual states, so it will work to govern the nation as a whole. Also, the Constitution will not allow a monarch to form. Laws will consistently be enforced, which also means that everybody will be paying fair taxes. People's natural rights are provided and protected in the preamble of the Constitution, and the constitution will unite us as one large nation which will be stronger. Despite all of these strong aspects of the constitution, many people were concerned about having one government rule over so much land, and because of the crisis that the United States was in, the constitution had been rushed, and there were many little parts that had been overlooked when it was made. Another viewpoint said that a bill of rights had to be added to the constitution. This side believed that the constitution should be revised carefully and thoroughly before it is used to govern America.
The idea of obtaining a voter ID and presenting it at polls to vote is a concern amongst Republicans and Democrats. Republicans believe that a voter ID should be required at polling areas and create laws in support of this notion, however Democrats believe that by passing these laws we deny the constitutional right of citizens to vote, therefore rendering these laws unconstitutional. I for one believe that we should have voter ID laws which required people show a form of ID at polling stations to ensure that votes registered for a poll are that of a citizen and that of the one who is voting. Based on the three articles from The Enduring Debate, debating whether we should have Voter ID laws, we can see as to how voting fraud can be committed and how it’s only use may possibly be used to push the Republican agenda and disrupt the Democrats agenda.
Throughout the years, the United States has been choosing its president using the electoral college, voter ID laws to reduce voter turnout, gerrymandering to choose our representatives, and using methods to select candidates in the primaries. Through the electoral college, their presidents have been unfairly chosen using the winner take all system. In this system, if they, the voters, choose the losing party, they might as well go home because of how it works. To make matters even worse, voter ID laws have been making their laws even more difficult to surpass, in able to reduce the number of votes. Gerrymandering is used to give a party a special advantage by using the packing and cracking method, and as for the primaries, they are held by
Benjamin Franklin, one of the founding fathers of the United States, once said “Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.” In America’s society today, some are willing to sacrifice their civil liberties in order to gain protection and security over some potential threat. Especially after the events of September 11th and several attempted bombings in U.S. cities. This sacrifice of individual freedoms such as the freedom of speech, expression, the right to information, to new technologies, and so forth, for additional protection is more of a loss than a gain. Citizens of the United States deserve equal liberty and safety overall, as someone should not have to give up
The public police are the primary crime-fighting organization in the government and it is necessary for police and the public to respect one another (Roberg & Novak, 2014). To rebuild trust with law enforcement, communities should educate themselves about their rights. This will allow them to know what exactly law enforcement can ask for and what they must or not answer when it comes down to simple traffic violations or any minor interaction with law enforcement. It does not matter if the individual is of Mexican, Asian, American, or any other origin, there are rights that every individual has. In the case of traffic stops or encounters with law enforcement in the streets, there are rights in place that everyone should be familiar with to prevent situations that could lead to police using force (ACLU,
I negate the resolution, "Resolved: When the United States is engaged in military conflict, national security ought to supercede conflicting claims of individual rights. My value for the round is Human Dignity, or what can be defined as a respect for the individual and his or her rights and virtues. John Stuart Mill states that "Everyone who receive the protection of society owes a return for the benefit... but not to the point that it violates constituted rights." Thus those rights which are the fundamentals of human dignity must be maintained. No fundamental goal should ever undermine this fundamental goal. The criteria which must consistently achieve is the maintenance of a legitimate government, or a govt. that maximizes the rights of
Every human being deserves to have Individual rights and they are a very important part of the justice system. Without individual rights things would be chaotic therefore, public order is brought into the system so that everyone’s individual rights are in place for each individual to use as a backbone for guidelines of what is acceptable and what is not. Although, there are disadvantages and advantages of both individual rights and public order they are still very essential to maintain order.
America is synonymous with the word freedom, even being dubbed “the land of the free” by its own national anthem. But, what makes America so much more “free” than other countries? Some would argue that it’s America’s system of democracy, despite the fact that democratic governments are now the most common form of rule found in countries around the world. American democracy, although effective, is not the best democracy style for all nations; because, like many other countries, its government contains many flaws, including: its low voter turnout, two-party political parties creating division and deadlock in congress, and government positions of power being bankrolled and controlled by the rich.
