The controversy between same sex marriage and religious beliefs has been a reoccurring issue in the United States over the past few years. Not only are religion and same sex marriage controversial issues alone, but there is a direct correlation between the two that makes the situation even stickier than before. In 1964, the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission published Title VII of the Civil Rights Act. Title VII states that “no employment should discriminate based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.” (Library of Congress, 2017) Title VII is meant to protect the workplace, and this is not shown in the case of Miller v. Davis. Kim Davis refused to provide a marriage license to a same sex couple based upon her religious belief. She stated that her religion does not believe that two people of the same sex should be married, and instructed her employees to not provide marriage licenses to same sex couples. She also stated that by signing her name to the marriage license, she was agreeing with the marriage, which because of her religion, she did not. (Green, 2015) Title VII is supposed to protect employees in the workplace, but the Supreme Court ruled otherwise in this case. The Supreme Court ruled that Davis’ actions were unethical due to the fact that same sex marriage is legal in the United States; she was denying that couple their constitutional rights. Denying the couple their marriage license was a direct infringement of
We are socialized to assumed heterosexuality is normal because it is all around us. Most of us are born into a heterosexual, mom and dad relationship. As we grow up looking up to them it becomes normal to see heterosexuality. Throughout my upbringing, my parents did not talk about homosexuality much. All of my family members throughout at least the first two generations identify as straight, so it was not something I grew up being around. Therefore it was never talked about in a positive or negative way. In biology class and church we are taught that we are on this earth to reproduce and contribute to the renewal of civilization. To do this the ‘normal’ way you would get married and heterosexually reproduce. It is taught that the only natural way to have sex is inserting a penis into a vagina. Institutions reinforce this by continuing to teach children throughout their education that man and woman are the normal thing. This belief came from the fact that a female egg cannot turn into a fetus unless it is fertilized by a male sperm. The cycle of heterosexual socialization promotes heterosexism because it is promoted as the ‘right’ thing to do throughout all forms of media and teachings. When all you see as a positive thing growing up is heterosexual, married couples with biological kids you are conformed to think that is the only way to find happiness. Heteronormative socialization excludes many different types of people such as couples who cannot conceive their own
“I think people feel threatened by homosexuality. The problem isn't about gay people, the problem is about the attitude towards gay people. People think that all gays are Hannibal Lectors. But gay people are sons and daughters, politicians and doctors, American heroes and daughters of American heroes” (Stacy).
Despite the historical aspects of gay marriage, all across the United States many hetero sexual and homosexual communities have spoken up about their natural rights, freedom of religion.
For the past 3 decades the views surrounding marriage has undergone a great deal of change (Lennox, 2015, p. 1101). This shift is due to the continual discussion of gay marriage. The interplay of religion and politics has led for much controversy. In the United States, the use of Christian and Jewish biblical texts are the main sources drawn upon for opposition, but have also been used as a supportive means of equality. Beyond the religious there are also psychological and physical health arguments, as well as civil rights arguments. Same sex marriage is examined through different paradigms, thus giving rise to religious, political/legal, and religious arguments surrounding the legalization of this institution for gay and lesbian couples.
In recent years, the debate over same-sex marriage has grown into a nationwide controversy, reverberating into the halls of congress, at the white house, in dozens of state and legislature and courtrooms, and in the rhetoric of election campaigns at both the national and state levels. As the debate rages on, the American religious community remains deeply divided over the issue, and over the morality of homosexuality. The debate has grown from an issue that occasionally arose in a few states to a national and even worldwide controversy.
Marriage is a big thing in the U.S. In many religions marriage is to be between a man and woman. Recently the U.S. has experienced many gay marriages. Gay marriage was previously controlled by the states and whether or not that was legal. People involved in the gay community face a lot of hatred, harassed, and ridicule. There are pros and cons of being apart of a gay marriage. Pros are they have the same benefits that a heterosexual marriages, it is protected by the constitution, it is a civil right. As there are pros that means there have to be cons and some of those are children need both a father or mother the absence of one puts the child at higher risk for early sexual activity, legalizing gay marriage could lead down a "slippery slope," giving people in polygamous, incestuous, bestial, and other nontraditional relationships the right to marry, and gay couples will be looked upon as doing something wrong in the eye of religion.
The political aspects of whether same-sex couples should be allowed to federal and government recognized marriages are a very complex issue. There are basically two sides to the political argument of whether same-sex couples should be allowed to marry. On one side are the liberals who feel that marriage is a civil right that should be denied based on the basis of a person's sexual orientation. On the other side you have conservatives who feel that marriage is an institution in which should only constitute one man and one woman. In this report we are going to examine how the issue of same-sex marriages are affecting our current political environment, how politics is affecting the movement for
Look back twenty-five years ago, on same sex marriage was a ?thought experiment? in our culture. The idea promoted primarily by those on the left and other cultures who?noticed?? amount of?boundaries to personal freedom and behavior. (April 6th, 2013 Dr.Jim Eckman).Just Seventeen years ago Congress pass a Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) which define a marriage, as a union between a man and women. In recent years, the debate has moved beyond questions of individual rights and proper family formation to include questions that pit religious liberty against non-discrimination policies. While all laws legalizing same-sex marriage contain some conscience protections allowing churches and other religious groups to refuse to marry gay and lesbian couples,
Most people believe that they deserve the rights they are granted by the government. An upstanding citizen who pays their taxes, serves their community and abides by the law should be afforded the rights of an American. However, not all citizens are afforded equal rights. Gay and lesbians are consistently denied rights that are typically taken for granted by the average American. Specifically, gay and lesbians couples are denied the right to marry even if they are upstanding citizens. They are held at an unfair disadvantage solely because of their sexual orientation. This discrimination must stop because gay and lesbian couples are law-abiding citizens too, who should be afforded the same rights as heterosexual couples.
There are also marriages that based on love stories, and those marriages are mainly based on the decisions of both man and woman together. Love is the key to each relationship whether a marriage, friendship, etc., “just as marital love offers the special goods deriving from close companionship, extramarital affairs offers a unique combination of excitement, affection, recognition, and strengthened self-esteem” (Martin, p.268). Also, Richard Taylor describes that when loving someone is to take the risk in overcoming normal pressures against extramarital matters. He explains that when marriage is based on mutual love, then it should be strong enough to face and survive any affairs or obstacles that couples might face. In my opinion, love controls every person to see its life positively; it’s a powerful feeling that motives us to do better things every day. However, love plays an integral part in changing the traditional marriage to a more valuable relationship. By accepting ones another opinion, to be jealous of doing the best for one another, to see the success in the eyes of each partner, and to feel fulfillment when taking a decision that is based on ourselves and not others.

Same-sex marriage is a huge source of debate. Whether for religious or moral reasons, many people
Homosexuals have become way more open on television with no shame. Now of days on television it is normalcy to be a homosexual. Ever since the fight for gay rights started, that is when it become more normal and not looked down upon. Not only is there more gay characters on hit television shows, but there are plenty of actors on television shows that are homosexuals in real life. Not only is there more homosexuals, there is also beginning to be a few transgenders that have popped up as well. Some shows that publicly include gay and transgender characters are "Glee," Grey's Anatomy," and "Modern Family"("Gay on Tv: It's All in the Family,"2012). Not only the fiction shows have that, but shows like "Keeping Up With The Kardashians" as well. Their own dad came out to say he wanted to be a girl. He was a major athlete in the Olympics, and he came out. It has been shown that many people have been influenced to come out and be more open with their sexuality, because when they see people on television doing so; they will as well.
As we know, same-sex marriage has been discussed and argued for a long time. Within the controversial topic of gay rights, there’s no area more controversial than same-sex marriage. And all of us ask ourselves if same-sex marriage should be legal or not. But the fact is that we have to start thinking about it as a moral and religious topic. The government shouldn’t legalize the same-sex marriage because the
