The United States is a country that was built on immigration. The first settlers, Native Americans, represent less than 2% of the total population; the remaining 98% of the population are immigrants or decedents of immigrants. Today, the US still has the highest immigration rate in the world with 757,434 naturalizations in the 2012 fiscal year only (US Naturalizations 2012, Department of Homeland security). People try to immigrate to the United States for many reasons. Some people immigrate because they have been granted a refugee status or asylum and other people immigrate to fulfill their dreams. Immigration has an effect on the American society and economy. The US cannot survive without immigrants.

Before the twentieth century, both individuals and families could migrate to the U.S. without any restrictions, which means that illegal immigration was not a problem at that time. In 1921, restrictive immigration quotas were presented on a temporary basis which was later expanded and made permanent in 1924. On Monday March 6, President Donald Trump signed a revised executive order that bans immigration from six Muslim countries, including Syria, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Yemen, and Sudan. The previous executive order also included Iraq, but was dropped due to the state’s significant role in the war on ISIS. It might be horrible for sending countries especially when they loss skilled labor forces so called “brain drain” but it became worth when the sending countries get remittances to build foreign exchange reserve capacity and the investments they made through their families or by themselves after returning to their homelands.
