A society which chews up and spits out anyone who has lost their economic worth through various disadvantages. John Steinbeck’s novel, Of Mice and Men, was written and set within the context of the Great Depression and illustrates these dreary times vividly. A time in which society seems to have overlooked and minimized people's value as human beings, and their humanity. This has been highlighted through racism and sexism throughout the book, but it all ties back to the fact that, in these dire times, people were primarily concerned about their own well-being. This “every man for himself” scenario was brought out through different venues in the novel. Times had reached a level of stagnation and rigidity through this, and, as such was certainly …show more content…
People simply cannot afford to take care of others because they can barely take care of themselves. It hit the point at which any attempts at helping others in a compassionate way, was seen as a stark and puzzling contrast against what was normal. Various characters in the novel were always very curious about the nature of George and Lennie's relationship. The boss of the ranch was suspicious about what George wanted to get out of his relationship with Lennie, thinking George might have been trying to exploit him because he had “never seen one guy take so much trouble for another guy” (22). Slim also tried to question George about his relationship to Lennie. The initial assumption was always of exploitation. Understanding that it was a form of mutual need and companionship was easier to show than to explain. With regards to Lenny and George's relationship (tragic as the final outcome was), they were, as human beings better together, than alone. George had someone to care for and be responsible for and Lenny had someone to guide him: they had a friend in each other. They were both better human beings together than alone. George considered it better to have a friend as a wandering worker than be more comfortable and empty with
Thomas Scarseth included several critiques in his published article. Scareth focused on pointing out the examples of theme, character, and symbolism in the novel, Of Mice and Men. He supported his claims with strong textual evidence. Hev then went on to explain the reasoning behind his views.
The common emotion these two dogs caused the narrator was embarrassment. In paragraph one, it talks about a Scotch terrier that had puppies out in the public. This states, “...my moment of keenest embarrassment was the time a Scotch terrier named Jeannie, who had just had six puppies...had the unexpected seventh and last at the corner of Eleventh Street and Fifth Avenue…” This would be quite embarrassing just due to the fact that it took place on a street corner. While the narrator’s dog was having its seventh and final puppy, there were people walking, biking, and driving cars. Lots of people would have seen this which would be a huge embarrassment to practically anybody. Also, in paragraph two it clearly states that the other dog, a large
Barbara Sher once said, “‘Isolation is a dream killer’” (qtd. in Wishcraft). In his novella, Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck scrutinizes the effects that alienation can have on society. Many characters experience loneliness throughout the novel. He illustrates the results of individuals becoming isolated from their peers. In Of Mice and Men, Steinbeck portrays characters alienated from society in order to illustrate the harmful effects of loneliness caused by discrimination.
“Am I my brother’s keeper? Yes, I am.” Scott, Jill “Brotha”. Since biblical times it has been debated over whether or not “I am my brother’s keeper”. In Mice of Men by John Steinbeck, he takes a deeper look at the meaning of my brother’s keeper. Of Mice and Men is based in California during the 1930’s. It is a tale of two friends who travel across California looking for work, and a place to call their own. While the story is mostly about George Milton, who looks after his travelling companion Lennie Smalls, who has a mental disability; the story is also about how Lennie takes care of George. For instance, they often sit and talk about how they have each other to take care of, and when Crooks makes it seem like Lennie is not coming back, Lennie almost assaults Crooks to protect George. Lennie, more than once in the story offers to leave George, if he feels that would be best, sacrificing his

Of Mice and Men was a striking book about a few men simply endeavoring to get by in the Great Depression. George and Lennie had known each other for quite a while and had developed to rely upon each other. All through the book Lennie got some information about them, about how they would get a place and live respectively, they never got the chance to do that, as life would have it, reality acted as a burden. The most questionable point from this book was the reason George killed Lennie. It was the best choice for numerous reasons, the first being that Lennie was a threat to people around him and additionally himself, the second is that Lennie couldn't make do without George and the last being that if George didn't, Curly would have.
Authors don’t always devise book ideas themselves; sometimes they draw inspiration from other, older works of literature. An example of this notion is the novella Of Mice and Men, by renowned author John Steinbeck. In this case, he was inspired by poet Robert Burns’s traditional Scottish poem To a Mouse, which describes a farmer having a one-sided conversation with a mouse. Burns was supposedly plowing in the fields and accidentally destroyed a mouse's nest, which it needed to survive the winter. In fact, Burns's brother claimed that the poet composed the poem while still holding his plow.
In John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men both Lennie and George needed each other, whether they liked it or not. Both the characters have a conversation about how they are different from others. George starts off the conversation by saying, “Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world. They got no family.”. Lennie finishes their motto by saying, “But not us! An’ why?... because I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you.” (13,14). Everyone needs and has a friend, even if they do not think the have one they do, but just do not realize.
Near the beginning of the story George tells Lenny if anything should go wrong at their new job to meet at their resting place by their job. In their relationship they depend on each but Lenny needs George more. The overall theme of the story is that the american dream is never really achievable no matter how close it seems. It also
One example of how George takes care of Lennie is, how George led all the ranch guys the opposite way of Lennie after Lennie killed Curley’s wife. This example perfectly explains the relationship between George and Lennie. George is basically Lennie’s caretaker; he has to protect him, care for him, and make sure he makes smart choices. Lastly, readers can see that George protects Lennie and is there to fix his mistakes. Specifically, when Lennie grabs the woman’s dress in Weed, and she screams and runs away, George is there to help Lennie get out of trouble.

Well for one lennie and george they dont agree to often well they do but its like rare.On the other hand tho you can tell Lennie and George love each other like brothers. In the text it states,¨Guys like us ,guys that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world. They got no family. They dont belong no place.¨George said this and Lennie disagrees with him saying they do have a future indeed when he says,¨But not us why because i got you and you got me to look after you.¨Kinda saying they got each other and they got a future together.

When is the right time to give up a loved one? No one wants to experience the pain of losing someone. If they are in trouble of losing their life and can’t be helped, we have to pick what's right. Euthanasia is a drug used to kill people who are terminally ill and incurable. This medicine refers to George shooting Lennie. Lennie was already in trouble for killing Curley’s wife on accident and he was scared someone was going to beat him up.George knew that Lennie was going to be killed because there was no way of helping him.
