I. Introduction
In this decade, “design thinking” has been captured attention from innovation scholars. Design thinking, originated from basic practices of designers, is a series of activities and attitudes toward bringing innovation [3][26]. This idea does not claim a necessity of being a designer, but designers may have a high potential to be an innovator in a various occasion.
In fact, recent management studies discovered that industrial designers contribute to innovative scientific research in the natural science field [5][29]. These studies clearly illustrate how industrial designers tactfully set a demand-pull goal and facilitate consensus-building among research project members.
They are also likely to achieve technological innovation in the industry sector. Reference [27] found their superiority in setting a consumer-oriented goal. Indeed, a versatile entrepreneur and industrial designer, James Dyson, invented a novel vacuum technology to resolve a suction problem, which has long made consumers

This company has a certain global market share in the general electronics field, such as electricity generators or transportation systems, similarly it grabs 25% of the domestic home electrical appliance market in 2010. It has a central design department and industrial designers basically assign to the department. A striking benefit of choosing Hitachi is in its design right (a patent-like protection system for a shape of products, and similar to design patent in the United States) documents. The majority of patent or design right applicants do not indicate detailed affiliations of every inventor/creators in their application documents; however, this company exceptionally indicates its design creators’ affiliation at the department level. Thus, by connecting this information with patent data, we can estimate at a high accuracy that whether an inventor is an industrial designer or
Alongside the entrepreneur spirit, Innovation is the process of taking new ideas and implementing them into the market. Key word being “new”, an innovation can be sometimes viewed as the application to better solutions that meet new demand-requirements, inarticulated needs or existing market needs. Innovative ideas range from: goods, services, products, processes, services, technologies or ideas that create value for which customers will pay for. For an idea to be an innovation, it must be replicable at an economical cost and must satisfy a specific need. This means is that one must be ready and willing put their new idea to the test. On the other hand, there is recognition that “innovation is also critical to cultural, environmental, social, and artistic progress as well” (Bullinger, 2006). With this stated, high-tech innovation is ultimately the reason why we can be thankful for the many new conveniences of the 21st century. Although we might see the forefront of innovation being very prominent in today’s world, innovation is truly nothing new. From the start of modern man times, innovative ideas have paved the way for civilization to advance and develop into what we are today and at the same time, we have barely begin to chip away at the tip of the iceberg of our true human potential. Some scholars believe that innovation is a
There are always multiple ways to solve problems to one specific question, or there can never be an answer at all. The process of solving problems is not always as straightforward as it seems when there are no definite answers. “Wicked” problems are not easily solvable, causing the process of solving them to be long and experimental. Many “wicked problems have multiple solutions or none at all, however a solution can be found by using design thinking, an approach to help discover innovative ways to resolve a business's challenges.
The boundaries and scope of design have broaden massively and the limits blur amongst the different endeavours and practices.
With the broad range of expertise in engineering and technology the company has certainly become and innovative leader. “So the company also takes the advantages of the new technology innovation in order to improve the efficiency and quality of the products. By utilizing the efficiency of the workforce, the company can posses the highest quality products and control over the 45% industry all over the world” (Brainmass, 2008, pg. 1).
Some of the key facts and critical issues presented in the case, begin with the understanding the development and evolution of an industry. According to Jack Parnell (2014), the development stages of an industry rely on the influences of competition and the potential profitability opportunities. At the introductory stage, a fairly new industry is being to make awareness of their product, however depend remains low because the industry is new. New industries rely heavily on technology and as demand begins to rises, the industry enters the growth stage (Parnell, 2014). When the industry becomes stagnant and constant this typically results in the parting of those who will carry on in the industry and the loss of unsuccessful competitors. This
The fact that technology is evolving every second means that the way we design, create and even advertise it is changed. Designer can go a long way, in many different directions. Even though the innovations introduced have a major positive impact, they do have a negative one as well.
The core concept behind ‘Design Thinking’ revolves around attaining a goal rather than simply fixing a problem at hand. Since focusing on an objective already helps address any unmet needs, goal-oriented solutions lay the groundwork for other improvements including future ‘Design Thinking’ solutions. As such, solutions of this nature need to be socially fluid, tangible in nature, and broadminded in approach.
Comparing Buchanan’s view with nowadays IDEO’s CEO Tim Brown, for example we see a core difference. Brown states that “design thinking is a lineal descendant of [ Thomas Edison’s research and development] tradition. Put simply, it is a discipline that uses the designer’s sensibility and methods to match people’s needs with what is technologically feasible and what a viable business strategy can convert into customer value and market opportunity” Design Thinking Brown, T. (2008).
Innovations form the main sources of competitive advantages and are always of significance for the growth of a company. Companies or organizations put their greater efforts in improving their performance by finding new ideas and knowledge on the best way of beating their competitors and therefore give satisfaction to their customers. There are various factors involved in the innovation design system which can be either internal or external.
The role of the designer in this book is describes as “the creation of value” (Julier,2008, Page 14). What Julier means by this is that the designer is who creates the value of the product through their originality and creativity. They can also add value by considering social, cultural, environmental and political aspects to their work. The creation of design is influenced by the availability of resources and development of technology. This statement indicates that Julier believes the art lies within creating value for design rather than physically being able to manufacture it. One could disagree with this and believe that manufacturing is a vital part of the designer’s considerations.
Industry pioneers are generally organizations that have exceeded expectations in innovative work (R&D) and advertising capacities nearby their operational abilities, using the data accessible to them to create items that interest to their intended interest group and convey to their customers in an opportune and pertinent way. “Founded in 1938, Samsung is one of the industry leaders in a multitude of industries from power generation through to smart phones” (Kovach, 2013).
Design is what I called the spreading of my mind. It is the act that I use in my day to day
The housewives of today rely on innovation to produce household products with the capabilities of simplifying their jobs at home. Companies, such as Electrolux, have teams of employees assigned to the task of creating new kitchen appliances and cleaning products geared around the needs of the world that can take their company to next level in modern technology. With the fierce competition threatening the success of Electrolux, the company revamps their strategy by appointing Hans Straberg as the new Chief Executive. The strain on the company’s finances left Mr. Straberg with no choice but to
Change is ever present, as the challenges of technology, environment and society demand our continuous attention and we struggle with issues of complexity, we see that the science, social science and humanities need a means of working together. Design research provides the orchestration, the systematization and visualization to bring together the disciplines to build bridges to the future. Such research will provide the evidence and insights upon which professional designers, industry and society can create
