H-1B Visas In recent years, much has changed in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. Three sources entitled, Rising above the Gathering Storm, Innovative America, and Tapping America's Potential argue that if Americans do not improve in the STEM field our economy will suffer, so will our exports, and will heavily impact America. If we do not improve then the standard of living may fall and so will our economy. The three reports talk about using more innovation and technology, if we do this then our economy will be stable. The proponents argue that we need to close achievement gaps, improve the quality of teachers, increase labor supply, improve our international ranking, and issue more H-1B visas. Workers in the STEM field think that their employers are replacing them because the H-1B foreign workers are cheaper. Although, critics argue that the STEM movement is sabotaging other countries so, America can be ahead. But, for the US to be ahead in innovation and STEM education, we need to issue more H-1B visas. The H-1b program is for guest workers from different countries.
The critics argue that these H-1B visas are “popular” because companies want to obtain workers at a lower cost than American workers.. Ron HIra, the writer of The H-1B and L-1 Visa Programs: Out of Control,” writes about how H-1B workers are supposed to be helping, but instead they are making things worse for American workers. “The goals of the H-1B and L1 visa programs
Each year thousands of mexicans cross the border illegally to find work in the united states. Most perform jobs that U.S citizens won’t do, and they pay taxes, some argue they should receive amnesty. However, opponents argue that aliens are a drain on the system and a threat to security, they should be deported. Should undocumented workers in the united states be allowed to stay? Undocumented workers in the united states should be allowed to stay in the united states. America is spending billions of dollars on different reform plans.
They could do the right thing now by passing a bill called the Bridge Act. It stands for Bar Removal of Individuals who Dream and Grow our Economy. Its chief sponsors are Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin, a Democrat, and South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, a Republican. It would extend protections to the dreamers now eligible for DACA through 2020, once again buying time to negotiate a comprehensive immigration reform
By the year 2020, the Hispanic population in Texas will outnumber the non-Hispanic White population (Petter and Hoque, 2013). However, Hispanics do not play a significant role in the STEM workforce (Robinson, 2007). The drastically low number of Hispanic students with a STEM degree only represent 5% of the total STEM workforce (Clewell, 2006; Malcolm, 2010; Arcidiacono, Aucejo, & Hotz, 2013). To further amplify the situation, 25% of jobs created over the next six years will require a bachelor’s degree (Strong American Schools, 2008).
comprehensive immigration reform could bring to this country, to the native- born and immigrants workers as well. Also, he makes emphasis in how the number of undocumented immigrants has increased since 1990’s; therefore, the economy of United States has dramatically increased.
An American citizen who visits other countries is somehow automatically protected, held to certain regards and given certain liberties, which sometimes the “Citizens” of those countries do not receive. Americans can travel to just about any country without a visa or any form of legal documents. Aside from a passport, they can choose to reside in that country simply because they want to without any form of backlash, ill treatment, or fear for their lives. They get some of the better jobs pushing the locals out of those positions. Therefore, illegal immigrants in the United States do have some constitutional rights that citizens have.
In recent headlines, the H-1B visa has come become a debatable topic. The number of visas distributed to skilled workers (H-1B) and who receives them, and whether the United States should increase or decrease the amount. Currently, the H-1B visa system is structure to administer 65,000 H-1B visas (Services, H-1B Fiscal Years (FY) 2014 Cap Season). According to the United States Citizenship and Immigration, 124,000 petitions were received during the 2013 fiscal year. (Services, H-1B Fiscal Years (FY) 2014 Cap Season). Some are suggesting that we need more skilled immigrant labor within our country for innovative and entrepreneurial exploration, while others are opposed to such a change and would prefer a decrease in the number of
With education being the number priority and the reason why many immigrants came to the United States, but with many organizations have been helping many immigrants in achieving their citizenship, but also helping students with scholarships with non-profit foundation, meaning that the no federal organization gave them money with no strict requirements about their status in the U.S to get this scholarships. An organization located here is here in Texas that is called the North Texas Dream Act which helps millions immigrants that still don’t have legal status yet and helps them in many ways by giving funds and scholarships to students that are in need to find money to finish their career and start a good life. Other ways of achieving funds to pay for tuition at certain college or universities by receiving in state tuition that is based on financial aid but the requirement aren’t very crucial they just to live in the state for two years and graduated from high school or got a GED. For example Texas has the application Texas Application for State financial aid and many don’t even know it exists being that it existed for more than a decade. If parents were to leave and be deported the student
Immigration is important for the growth of the economy because it’s a major contributions towards the economy. The United States has often been referred to as a global melting pot due to its assimilation of diverse cultures, nationalities, and ethnicities. Today, this metaphor may be an understatement. Edstam and Carlson an immigration activists reports that, without the extra work and consumption provided by immigrants, the economy of the United States would collapse. They include in the article saying that, despite the common notion that immigrants steal jobs from Americans, the 2005 Economic Report shows that The Federal Reserve in fact recently raised its benchmark interest rate because it observed a strengthening U.S. economy with reduced unemployment, rising wages and some labor shortages Immigrants continue to strengthen local economies through their higher productivity and increased consumption (Edstam and Carlson). An article by Savajlenka added, Studies show that competition with American workers among immigrants is very minimal and limited to the unskilled labor. Therefore, Savajlenka immigration analyst states that, “Numerous studies have documented that immigrants are needed to replace the large number of retiring Baby Boomers and that the future growth of the U.S. workforce will come from immigrants and their children” (Savajlenka). This is an additional like a shot in occupations that presently use several older employees, like janitorial and truck driving
It is said that both high-skill and low-skill immigration leads to increased economic growth. Immigration benefit the U.S in two ways, “it had increased immigration to expand the American workforce and encourages more business start-ups” (Furchtgott-Roth 1). It also “increases economic efficiency by raising the supply of low- and high-skilled immigrants”( Furchtgott-Roth 1). Immigrants work and provide much of the low-skill labor for industries. If they didn’t most consumers would pay high prices for hotels and restaurants. Immigrants also benefit from and to the U.S research in science, technology, engineering and mathematics(STEM).
In 2005, the three reports entitled Innovative America, Tapping America’s Potential, and Rising Above the Gathering Storm, argue that if the U.S. does not improve its science technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education the standard of living in the U.S. may decrease and threaten the economy and national security. The reasoning that the proponents use is that with more innovation and technological advancements, exports will increase and benefit the economy, but if there is no innovation this will harm the economy. The three reports, according to the Congressional Research Service, argue that in order to prevent these issues, we must close the academic achievement gaps in STEM, improve the quality of teachers, increase STEM labor supply, improve on international ranking assessments, produce more STEM degrees, and increase the number of H-1B visas issued. One of the most controversial subjects of the STEM movement is that companies are using H1-B visas to employ foreigners at cheaper rates rather than U.S. citizens. However, critics of the STEM movement argue that this is a strategic idea called “Brain Drain” where the U.S. is “draining” the most talented and skilled workers from other countries in order to gain an advantage on a global stage. In order for the U.S. to remain a leader in innovation and STEM education, the issue of H1-B visas needs to be addressed.
Illegal immigration is a major problem which most of the developed countries face in the current economy, and it has been major political problem for the political parties in America (republicans and democrats) and over years each party has a different agenda to discuss the problem. Illegal immigration can be defined as a movement of people from a source country to the destination country without any legal documents and violates destination countries immigration laws. People have moved across lands over years to escape a war situation or to get better facilities in a different country. Countries have defined immigration laws to restrict people to enter their land without proper documentation as illegal immigration social and time
Many American companies use H-1B visas to bring in small numbers of foreigners for openings demanding specialized skills, according to official reports. But for years, most top recipients of the visas have been outsourcing or consulting firms based in India, or their American subsidiaries, which import workers for large contracts to take over entire in-house technology units — and to cut costs. The immigrants are employees of the outsourcing
Today’s world economies are so tied together and react to one another that only the brightest and smartest will survive. The better educated a student is in the specific career that they have chosen to earn a degree in will give them the educated edge so that they can out compete with foreign markets. President Barack Obama said "In this kind of economy, countries who out-educate us today will out-compete us tomorrow. Already, China is graduating eight times as many engineers as we are. By 12th grade, our children score lower on math and science tests than most other kids in the world,” (“Full”). American colleges need to do a better job at improving math and science scores so that the graduating student can better compete in the world market Asian countries are continuously outperforming American students. Gary W. Phillips, chief scientist at the American Institutes of Research said “In this case, the bad news trumps the good because our Asian economic competitors are winning the race to prepare students in math and science,” (Dillon). The better colleges prepare students to edge out competitors in the world market needs to be their priority.
Science education has been a controversial topic among employers and schools for years. Employers are requesting more STEM graduates yet the schools are unable to keep up with the rising demand. Unemployment rates continue to go up while positions in the science, technology, and engineering fields have remained open and unfulfilled. STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education is vital to the position of the United States in the world standings in STEM research and design. Currently 3 of the 5 top positions in STEM research are held by Asian countries and sadly the United States doesn’t even fall in the top 10 for the list. There was once a time when the United States led the world in STEM research, but times have
There are many advantages of having an H1B visa, some of which includes the fact that someone can work and live in the United States as an immigrant without having to worry about obtaining additional green cards or going through other immigration proceedings. Further, the H1B process is a lot quicker
