Currently in Australia, only genetically modified plants are approved. Genetically modified foods has many benefits to society however there are also downsides to this technology. An advantage of using GM foods is that genetically modified foods will reduce production costs and make food more affordable for consumers. Genetic modification to crops has improved the yield by allowing them to grow in high or low temperatures, become resistant to diseases and insects and enable plants to grow in extreme environments (Freedman D.H., 2013). This reduces the amount of resources (water and fertilizer) needed to cultivate these crops and combined with its higher yield, will make crops cheaper and more affordable. On the contrary, opposing views state that due to the patenting of GM crops, prices of seeds will rise which raises ethical concerns. Due to the high price of the technology, not all farmers will be able to access genetically modified seeds due to their financial status. Large companies patent their GM seeds, causing the price of seeds to raise to a point where it is unaffordable for small farmers and third world countries (Akumo, D.N et. al, 2013).
