In this world, there are a lot of languages used to communicate. Nation and cultural diversity are a source of variation in the languages. The diversity of the language used by a particular group is a factor of the occurrence of bilingualism. According to Grosjean (1984, p. 1) bilingualism is the use of two or more languages. The proficiency of bilingualism may vary depending on the exposure to the other users of language and opportunities to use the language. It is one of the factors of replacement of the language. This phenomenon known as code switching, it can occur as a whole, the incorporating elements of other languages in the language being used, or the turn of a variation of a language. Based on Poplack (1980) theory code switching is the alternation of two languages within a single discourse, sentence or constituent. Garrett (2010, p. 11) said that code switching is the most powerful feature of informal communication. Due to the presence of the use of mother tongue (L1) it shows the lack of teachers’ incredibility and capability (Labov, 1971, cited in Hughes, Shauness, and Brice, 2006). Linawati (2015, p. 2) also felt a disadvantage of using code switching in classrooms, she stated that the teachers are not creating appropriate atmosphere and encouraging the students’ interest in learning English. In contrast from socio-cultural perspective, the presence of code-switched communication in EFL classrooms encourages capability of using both languages effectively and creative language use (Dahl, Rice, Steffensen, Amundsen, 2010). As for the students’ attitude based on Suganda (2012) and Hamied (2014) studies reveal that students have a positive attitude towards the use of code switching in EFL classrooms. In America, there is a predominant growth in multiple ethnicities and cultural backgrounds; leading to the usage of multiple languages in the American culture. There is a growing need for many people to learn and utilize multiple languages within the workplace and within one 's own personal life. The importance of bilingualism and the knowledge of multiple languages is ever increasing, and therefore becoming more important for the younger generations. The push for knowing multiple languages and becoming bilingual has many potential negative and positive effects.

Annotated Bibliography Throughout WWII, Navajo soldiers, through way of code, sent messages to the rest for the American troops. These Navajos endured many hardships during the war, which leads to the question: How did the Navajo Code Talkers Culture develop and change during WWII? The readers will understand that over 400 Native American Marines severed in the war in the pacific. The audience also finds that Navajos were not allowed to speak of their contributions during the war, until the 1960’s.
In the article, “Learning How to Code Switch: Humbling, but Necessary,” I learned that I can relate to Eric Deggans to my own experience. When growing up I had to code switch, an example when I was in elementary and I was in Bilingual classes from Kindergarten to Third Grade. Then when fourth Grade hit my school wanted to switch me to an English class not a Bilingual classes anymore. My mom that day had a lot of thought about it and she said it was fine that the school suggested that, so I switched. The change was different because I couldn’t speak Spanish in my 4th grade English class anymore and I had to code switch to just speaking English to the rest of my classmates. There are only forty to seventy Navajo Code Talkers still alive. Navajo code talkers used their native language to help win World War II. The book Code Talker by Joseph Bruchac is about a Navajo boy who is separated from his family and hometown and after World War II. The theme language was power was important when Ned was at boarding school and in after war.
The Code Substitution (CDD) Learning is Immediate and Delayed Memory Tests. This test is based on the symbol digit-coding paradigm. The ANAM rendition emphasizes scanning and paired associate learning of the symbol–number pairs. The test also includes a recall component. A string of up to nine symbols and nine digits are paired in a “key” across the upper portion of the screen. During the test, there is a box at the bottom of the screen that contains a single symbol–number pair. Pairings at the bottom change and at times match the pairing in the key at the top. Other times the pairing is incorrect. During the learning phase, the participant indicates whether or not the pairings at the bottom match the key and receives feedback for incorrect responses. An immediate and/or a delayed recall trial can also be included. During the recall phase (M2S), there is no key at the top and the participant must indicate if the pairings appearing at the bottom are correct or incorrect from memory
Code Meshing is the process of speaking both formal and informal at the same time; where as code switching is the process of switching from speaking formal to informal, or informal to formal in order to fit in. I choose not to use either of those methods. I used to use code switching most of my life up until I went to high school. My parents taught me to code switch to show respect to my elders. You should not speak to elders the same way you would speak to your friends. Starr Carter lived between two opposing worlds because her family and friends existed in the impoverished community together with the main character of the book, while she studied in a fancy school located in a rich part of the city. At home, Starr had a role of a loving daughter surrounded by care and support. In school, she was a student standing against the prejudice against her origin that is an uneasy process because other children can be violent. Her identity can benefit her because of the opportunity to develop and succeed due to the prominent education. In the same time, it is a threat because of the prejudice towards young lady in a wealthy community.

In the Modern Family episode “Lake Life”, after reading the obituary on Hugh Duncan and hearing all the kind things said about him, Jay decides he wants to influence his family in a positive way so that when he dies they will write kind things about him. In a particular conversation with Mitchell about an awkward experience he had reuniting with his first kiss he had with a boy; Jay uses both verbal and nonverbal language. He uses code switching, powerful language, haptics, and proxemics, to relate to his son, seem competent and intelligent, and connect with him positively so Mitchell will remember the advice Jay gave him and talk about him fondly. Jay ultimately wants to influence Mitchell and share information with him to help him, as well as help his own personal motives.
Code switching is a part of everyone’s daily life. Gloria Anzaldua expressed how she used code switching in her story “How to Tame a Wild Tongue.” Anzaldua grew up in Texas, near the Mexico border, to a Mexican-American family. Her family primarily spoke Spanish, but while at school and in the community, they had to speak English, the accepted language of America (Anzaldua 530). Anzaldua did not want her native language to die, so she wrote “How to Tame a Wild Tongue” to express her feelings, and to show how code switching affected her everyday life. All these reasons result in social interaction between speakers of different language, which helps predict language contact may result in multilingualism. It is estimated that over half of all countries are multilingual. An example of a multilingual society is Switzerland with three main languages: French, German and Italian and each language is dominant area of its own. John Edwards believes that everyone is bilingual, even if someone can only speak or understand, he believes that you have “some ‘command’ of a foreign tongue” therefore there is no clear monolingual country. Therefore multilingualism is useful in showing how the social interaction between people of different languages help us predict the linguistic results of language contact as it is an example of what happens when multiple languages exist and interact in the same country.
