There have been controversies on the topic of capital punishment and its role within the society. Capital punishment is interpreted as a person committing a crime and being punished by death through lethal injection or electrical stimulus for it. Capital punishment is also referred by the term death penalty. The government implement capital punishment to control the future would-be criminals. The supporters believe that capital punishment is the only way to make criminals suffer. On the other hand, the opponents think it is inhuman and against our morals. The debate between the two sides just goes on whether to retain it or not. As a matter of fact, capital punishment is suitable for some of the crimes, but it is inhuman, and government spent a lot on it. Therefore, it should be abolished.
First, capital punishment is immoral and unethical. It degenerates the value of a human life, a life gifted by God. It puts life of an innocent at risk. Over the past, few of the possible innocent felonies were executed. One of the case was Brian Terrell’s case. In that case, on a winter night dated December 9th, 2015 just before 1:00 am, Brian Terrell was put to death for a murder of John Watson, a friend of Brian’s mother. It took an hour for the nurse to find Brian’s veins for lethal injection IV. Lethal injections are basically made up of three drugs, i.e., sodium thiopental, pancuronium bromide, and potassium chloride. Sodium thiopental is used to induce unconsciousness, pancuronium bromide is used for muscle paralysis, and potassium chloride is used for stopping the heart. Therefore, it is used for execution. Eventually, the nurse found one on the right hand and inserted the lethal injection into Brian’s hand. Brian was suffering from a tremendous pain, raised head up and said, “Didn’t do it,” to the County Sheriff Ezell Brown. Saying those words, Terrell shut his eyes with pain. Terrell was triad three times. Terrell lawyers argued that no physical evidence that were found linked to Terrell and prosecutors presented misleading testimony. The main reason of Brian’s execution was based on Johnson’s false testimony. Brian Terrell was executed, but was possibly innocent. Therefore, the death of an innocent is unethical
Debate over capital punishment is nothing new, but it reaches a whole new level when the accused is mentally ill. The question then becomes… was the perpetrator aware of his heinous actions by knowing right from wrong at the time of the crime or was the mental illness controlling his actions? While being sympathetic to the grief and heart break of the victim’s loved ones, I believe that execution for the mentally ill should not be allowed, because often their illness makes them incapable of knowing right and wrong of their actions. Many of those with mental illnesses often go undiagnosed and untreated, either by choice or by financial circumstances, because of the stigma and general lack of understanding associated with this type of diagnosis in our society.
Death penalty is also known as capital punishment or execution. Societies from all over the world have used this sentence at one point in history, in order to avenge criminals. Most common reasons for being sentenced to death were war crimes, war treason, murder and espionage. Back then, the capital punishment was almost always accompanied by torture, and executions were public. The most used execution method was by hanging. If an inmate chooses the electric chair it takes anywhere between 2 min and 15 minutes. The criminal receives a jolt between 500 and 2000 volts for every 30 seconds, attending doctor waits for body to cool after each bolt and check if the heart is still breathing. While in some societies, violent death penalties are still being employed – like shooting, hanging, electric chair and gas chamber – in most countries, these have been replaced with a painless method – the lethal injection. When the person is put to death for the death penalty they use a lethal injection execution, in most cases. Sodium thipal makes the person go deeply unconscious but unable to feel himself being paralyzed from the “pancuronium bromide”. On death row an inmate waited an average of 15 years between sentencing and execution but a quarter of inmates die on death row from natural cases. The time has come to make punishment fit the crime, too oppose lethal injection, but not because these untried new drugs might obituary cause pain, but cause confusion, lethal injection conflates
Capital punishment is one of the most controversial ethical issues that our country faces these days. Capital punishment is the legal penalty of death for a person that has performed heinous acts in the eyes of the judicial system. Discussion on whether capital punishment is humane or considered cruel and unusual punishment has been the main issue this of debate for years. Recent discussion goes far beyond the act itself but now brings into question whether medical personal should aid in this practice.
The capital punishment is defined as execution of an offender sentenced to death after conviction, by a court of law of a criminal offense-according to the Encyclopedia Britannica. There are five methods to execute an offender, a lethal injection, the gas chamber, electrocution, hanging, and the firing squad. The lethal injection is the most commonly used, because there is no pain associated with this form of execution. Since 1976, there has been about 1400 executions in the United States of America. In those 1400 offenders about 150 offenders were proven innocent. The death penalty does not deter criminals, proving that it is unnecessary and preventable.
A[C1] death penalty is a sentence of execution served to culprits found guilty of murder or a capital crime. It is a type of capital punishment. [C2] Over the years, there has been different views on whether murder culprits deserve death punishments or not and while some of these debates have yielded positive results, some countries continue to allow this form of capital punishment. The death penalty is a barbaric and atrocious form of capital punishment and because of its nature of unfairness, immoral values, lack of deterrence and so many other reasons, it has been abolished in majority of countries around the globe.[C3] However, it is still used in about 58 countries. This form of punishment includes shooting to death, lethal injections, hanging, stoning and so on. [C4]
Since the early sixteen-hundreds execution has always been a way to punish someone who’d murdered a person or committed a crime of treason. Ever since 1972 The United State Supreme Justice Courts created Capital Punishment, making a person applicable for the death penalty. In select U. S states a person could earn the penalty by aggravated rape, first - second degree murder, the killing of a Police Officer, killing a political figure / court member in or out of an active court hearing. Therefore, in 2017 only twenty lethal injections have occurred for now, but more participants are still on trial. Although there are restrictions to execution, in the Hall verses Florida Case Freddie Lee Hall would find that he’d be getting away from the death penalty by Judicial Court law.
America is one of the few western nations still using the death penalty to this day as a method of punishment for capital crime. Over 2,000 prisoners are on death row with their fates already determined (Andre, Velazquez) What makes the death penalty so complex, and that is noticed but sometimes disregarded, is the way prisoners are executed, the fact that some of these prisoners may be innocent and the racial disparities that can determine the reason for sentencing people to death. As prisoners wait to be executed, civil rights activists aim to get rid of the penalty by arguing against it for being unjust and immoral. The arguments for and against the penalty are compelling: capital punishment is regarded as unconstitutional as it goes against the 8th amendment of our nation’s constitution, it saves people by getting rid of a murderer or person who is just as bad as a killer, and it is in the best interest of the people for these convicts to not walk the streets we live in. Both groups, left and right, have a say in what they think about the issue, but so far no change has been done to fix it.
Most opponents of the death penalty abhor it for ethical and moral reasons. However, it is not unreasonable to think that some would oppose it in order to facilitate punishments in a different manner. One example of this would be David Zink who in 2001 abducted, sexual assaulted, and the murdered a 19 year old girl in a gruesome act of violence. Only in 2015 was he given the death sentence where he would be lethally injected in accordance with Missouri laws. Before his execution though his final words were:

Although some opponents support capital punishment, it should be abolished and an alternate found in its place because it doesn’t give the victim’s family closure, the inhumane conditions during death row, and the fact it doesn’t work as a deterrent. Capital punishment is the execution of criminals for the crimes they committed. This paper explores three reasons as to why capital punishment is wrong and should be abolished. One downfall to capital punishment includes the risk of taking an innocent life such as Cameron Todd Willingham who was wrongfully convicted in 1992 and executed in 2004. There is also a risk of having a botched execution. A mistake might be made during the procedure, making it long and painful for the prisoners. For instance, Clayton Lockett suffered a gruesome death because the doctors were unable to inject lethal injection into his vein, making it burst. In addition, capital punishment causes harmful psychological effects to correctional officers,
A man on death row is being put to rest even after evidence has proving that he did not commit the crime he was sentenced for. The death penalty is unconstitutional; the due process clause of the Fifth and Four Tenth Amendments says that no person shall be deprived of life without due process law. “One argument states that the death penalty does not deter murder. Dismissing capital punishment on that basis requires us to eliminate all prisons as well because they do not seem to be any more effective in the deterrence of crime (Lowe). Capital Punishment has its positive view points and its negative view points.
The death penalty in America has been around since colonization, although the laws regarding it and the offenses which were punishable by death varied by colony. Today in America the death penalty is legal in 31 states. Opponents of capital punishment often try to refute the practice as unconstitutional on the grounds of it being a cruel and unusual punishment. This argument doesn’t get very far in the courts now though as the method of enacting a death sentence has been widely changed to an injection method which is claimed to be a quick and non violent way of administering the sentence. The issue brought up with this method being that there have
Capital punishment has been a recurring, controversial issue throughout the history of the United States of America. When an individual is accused for a heinous crime such as murder, one of their sentences could possibly be the death penalty. Taking a life for a life seems simple on the surface, but in reality, there are many setbacks and controversies that come with it. Capital punishment has been around for a while but it hasn’t been contested as much as it has today. People who are for the death penalty believe that these criminals are a threat to society and should be terminated. People who are against the death penalty often believe that taking someone’s life is cruel and unusual punishment, thus being unconstitutional. Despite the feud between the two arguments, capital punishment still persists in many states in the US today. There are some people who are even caught in the middle of the two opposing arguments. The issue is often brought up in courts and is constantly bothersome to the political process of the United States. Also, it is one of the most dire and important issues that are consistently brought up in the media today. Due the mass amounts of controversy this topic receives, it should be a problem that the United States makes a priority to resolve.
The United States is considered as one of the most developed nations in the world. The United States is often linked with words such as equality, freedom, opportunity, democracy, and so on. These words used to describe the United States are all great American virtues. One practice that can also be linked to the United States, that is usually not mentioned and is a terrible reality, is state sanctioned murder or capital punishment.
