Worldwide, there has always been a plethora of issues concerning whether animals should or should not be used for biomedical research. There are some advocating for the best and most-advanced medicine for the people; with disregard for the animal’s health. They believe people’s needs should be the first concern. However, others put the animal’s health first. If the animal is not in safe conditions, then it does not matter what medicine advances might be discovered. Biomedical research is defined as “The application of the natural sciences, especially the biological and physiological sciences, to clinical medicine” (“Biomedicine.” Dictionary.com, Dictionary.com, www.dictionary.com/browse/biomedical.). Without biomedical research on animals, modern medicine would not exist. Animal testing has enabled the findings of treatments for cancer, antibiotics for infections, and preventatives for illnesses. For these reasons, animal testing should be used in the process of developing biomedical research.
Animal testing is crucial because without it, scientists might never find developments for biomedical research. Worldwide, there are millions of diseases that create devastation in countless families. However, there are vaccines, cures, and processes that scientists have came up with to help fix this problem. How fast and efficiently they come up with these treatments is the difference in many lives saved. Animal testing has been proven to speed up the process of collecting research
Although there have been significant medical breakthroughs based in animal testing and experimentation, animal testing is a poor method of science as it is largely useless and
Throughout the years the use of animals in medical research has been a hot debate around the world. Although animal testing may be cruel and inhumane, thousands of humans are saved thanks to the research that animals supply researchers with. Animals testing have taken over our knowledge of medicine and treatments to a whole different level. Animal testing also does this in a cheap and effective way. Without animals testing out knowledge wouldn’t be up to date, in other words animals’ testing is good.
Although animal testing has some negatives, it also has some positives. The association, Americans for Medical Processes has stated that “animal-based research has contributed to significant improvement in the length and quality of our lives.” One of the ways in which animal testing has assisted humans is in the treatment of cancer. Due to animal based research, scientists were able to discover new molecular and genetic understandings of tumor biology. This knowledge has lead to treatments that help solve the problem of cancer. Another way in which animal testing has helped humans is in HIV/AIDS. Although there is not a cure for the disease yet, animal testings have helped scientists make custom drugs with less side effects. Also, the knowledge
Animal testing has contributed to many life-saving cures, treatments, and major advances in understanding and treating conditions such as breast cancer, childhood leukemia, brain injuries, cystic fibrosis, malaria, multiple sclerosis, tuberculosis, and many others, and was instrumental in the development of pacemakers, cardiac valve substitutes, and anesthetics. Using animals as research subjects is appropriate because they are similar to human beings in many ways.
An estimated 25 million or more animals are used yearly in the U.S. These animals are commonly used in biomedical research as “models” for human disease, they are also used in basic biomedical research which is research for general understanding. Not only are animals used in biomedical research but, behavioral research as well, such as psychology and addiction studies, military, space, and agricultural research, product development and drug testing, as well as science education. Animals shouldn’t be used for such testing, these tests are unethical, inhumane and completely unnecessary. Thousands of animals suffer and die every day in laboratories around the world. In most states, abuse or cruelty towards animals is illegal. A person can face up to 7 years in prison and a fine of maximum $235,600. If it is illegal for cruelty to be conducted on animals why does it make it okay in the name of science?
Thanks to animal research, many diseases that once killed millions of people are now either treatable or curable. Animal testing has not only benefit humans, but animals as well. Some animal testing has lead to life saving and life extending treatments for many of the animals used for testing. A complete alternative to animal testing has yet to be discovered.
This may come as a surprise to some, because the advances from animal testing are relatively unknown. Many medical advances have been found because of animal testing, including “penicillin, blood transfusions, insulin (that controls blood sugar levels of diabetics), kidney transplants, and vaccines for polio and meningitis” (Shany 84). These treatments and vaccines would not have been discovered if animal testing had not been used. Not only have treatments and vaccines been found for humans, but treatments for animals have been too, such as the “vaccines for rabies, anthrax, feline leukemia, and canine parvo virus”(Shany 84). All of these medicines and treatments have been found through animal testing, and the world would be in bad shape if they hadn’t found the treatment for most of
The testing of animals in scientific and commercial research has been debated for many years. Some people view animals as companions or part of the family, but others think of them as a way to advance medicine by providing researchers with a means to develop better medical techniques, discovering vaccines, and helping to find a cure for a disease. Regardless of how a person may view animals, they are worthy of better protection by our government and us as a society. Although some animal testing has been successful, there are research alternatives that could eliminate the pain, suffering, and deaths that animals endure in scientific research. Therefore, animals should not be used in scientific research
Animal testing is used to see the effects of products before the products are put up for human consumption. With this testing, thousands and thousands of animals are kept in cages and subjected to pain and isolation every year. Even though these animals endure this extreme pain for the safety of humans, results are rarely the same in animals as they are in humans. Even though animal testing is deemed as bad science, people say that every major medical advance is because of animal testing. This is not true, since we have vaccines, CAT scans, MRI, and many more advances that are not due to animal testing. Do we even need animal testing? Animal testing is misleading, cruel, archaic, and is not essential to medical research.
Animal testing is not only beneficial to human but also animals, at least to those who are not used in the experiments, such as pets and endangered species. Along with researching for new treatments and medicines for
Most people have heard the phrase animal testing, but some are still not aware of what it actually involves. Animal testing can also be called animal research, and it refers to the experimentation on animals for many different medical treatments for humans. Several different animals are tested on, from rodents to primates. It can take place at medical schools, universities, or pharmaceutical companies. Some animals are bred specifically for medical testing. Others, can be taken from the wild, and placed in an animal testing facility. Without animal testing, we wouldn’t have the knowledge or successful treatments for: Leukemia and breast cancer, kidney failure and transplants, Alzheimer’s disease, HIV and Aids, polio, and premature birth. Whether
One of the most positive things about animal testing is that “animal testing has contributed to many life-saving cures and treatments” (Animal Testing). “Testing on animals can be attributed with almost every medical breakthrough in the last 100 years” (Andrews). Many new medicines that are made need to be tested to make sure that they are going to treat diseases and cure them or stop them from growing. New medicines are not always going to work the first time around, so experimenting on animals helps scientists know how medicines will react on the human body. “Experiments in which dogs had their pancreases removed led directly to the discovery of insulin, critical to saving the lives of diabetics” (Animal Testing). And according to that, without
plays is a pivotal point in which advancement of medicine can progress to new heights. Scientists
In 2014 767,622 animals were used for medical research. Without these animals to test on we would have had to test on other human beings. Who would you rather test on, a rat, or a loved one? Medical animal testing is needed to keep moving forward in the medical fields and to keep our society strong.
Throughout the years, animal testing for biomedical research has created a significant amount of controversy. With all the talk, many people end up forgetting what the main reason biomedical research is for. Scientists don't want to hurt the animals on purpose, but they want to make sure humans are cured from their diseases and illness. They should be able to test on animals for biomedical research purposes because animals have helped us find cures, and animals being used for testing is more beneficial than the animals being free animals.
