Being “different” today means a whole lot. It could start riots or debates no one is really equipped to handle. Everyone is “different” in their own way and shape but that won’t stop the movement for peace and equality. This also stands true to bilingualism. Many people in the world speak hundreds of different languages but English and Spanish are very prevalent in America. In order to find peace with these two conflicting languages one must find a medium that does not segregate others in a education and allows for others to live and function properly in society. Being bilingual means that people have the ability to speak two languages while others are able to understand your intent and meaning. Espada and Rodriguez, two well credited writers, contrast in their meaning of bilingualism. Espada, a professor of English at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, addresses the need for English and Spanish to coexist. To stop English because it brings political unfairness to non-native speakers. Espada writes,”Under the best of circumstances, the language of the law has great power to disorientate its victims, even those who are well-educated ” (13). Mostly applying to those who cannot speak English, the law is used unjustly against others speaking in the “dialects of the powerful: Legalese, … bureaucratese” (5). Espada simply wants peace between English and Spanish not any conflicts between these two languages, but political jacka**es and English zealots refuse this simple
