When it comes to Enrique and Lourdes I believe that they do defy the stereotypes. This book gave me the knowledge of what really goes on with illegal immigrants. The trouble they go through to get to America is unbelievable. Some even have to the repeat the trip multiple times. Enrique himself had to eight times. The worst is the beatings he went through most times. How can one endure something like that multiple times? The police were nothing, literally nothing. The law is meant to protect people not join in. The emotions come from Lourde and her story leaving your children behind is something I cannot imagine. After reading this I do not think anyone judge immigrants the same. I believe that Americans think that these illegal immigrants are these dirty people who only want to come here to take our land and our jobs. We judge them based off what we think illegal immigrants should be not what they are. I do not think Americans truly understand the dangers that these people are put through every day as they try to make their way into America. We do not see first-hand a little girl being thrown off a train to her death or the police brutally beating the immigrants. That is a big controversy that this book brings to life. The immigrants are not worried about life after getting into America. They are worried about being beaten, raped, and mugged. Parents who leave their children behind worry about never seeing their children again. These illegal immigrants deal with a lot more
This book is a great book and wonderful to open eyes to immigration, this book would
The Red Umbrella by Christina Diaz Gonzalez and “A Band-Aid for 800 Children” by elli sastow both show the subject of immigration and how it affects families. Even though both of these authors use similar techniques to portray the subjects, they also use very different techniques to show their feelings about the effects that immigration has on most families This paragraph is about the similarities of The red umbrella by Christina Diaz and “A Band-Aid for 800 Children” by Elli Sastow. One similarity in both of these books is Family separation and how it's similar is in the book red umbrella the kids had to leave because of the war and the parents didn't want them growing up in a war type of area so they had to make them leave and the parents
Immigration has been a very disputable topic in America. Newcomers to America undergo many struggles during their time trying to get a better life from which they came. The author Cristina Henriquez is that of Latino immigrants, she published the book in 2013 around the time when Immigration started becoming more controversial. Henriquez wrote the book as a way to show the point of view of immigrants escaping corrupted homelands or in search of better lives but sometimes at certain costs. An article on the Book of Unknown Americans editorial eyes says “Book of Unknown Americans plays against the idea of America as the promised land for people running from social or political upheaval, or people running toward a shining dream of success in a
Throughout this first chapter of Latino Americans the key points in my opinion were the following. Starting with the origin story of the Americas, the book mentions there might not be a definitive starting point because there “500 nations in North America before a European ship ever dropped anchor off the Eastern Seaboard” (Suarez 3). The book from this point on chronologically starts narrating, first about 55 years before Protestant refugees from Mayflower ever stepped on American soil, a Spanish sailor Pedro Menendez de Aviles forced French protestants from their Florida coast settlement to then stablish St. Augustine. From this point the book continues to tell the stories of Juan de Oñate, from witnessing the founding of Santa Fe, the oldest capital of North America, to exploring more than half a dozen of American states, he is one of the most fundamental conquistadors who is the least
I started this essay off with a quote one of the characters mention in the book because it basically gives us the main idea the author is trying to get readers to understand throughout the book. By looking at the title of this novel, “The Book of Unknown Americans” and by looking at the author’s name- Cristina Henriquez, we can already get an idea of what this novel is going to be about. When someone first takes a look at the title and author of this book they would assume that it is going to be about immigrants who moved to the United States and struggled to fit in. After reading this novel, I now understand how difficult it was for these Latino immigrants to leave everything they have in hope for better lives here in the United States. Each person has their own meaning of what it means to be an American and their own reason of what most immigrants come here for. The Rivera family came here in hope for better resources to help treat Maribel because they didn 't have the resources they needed back in their country.
while stories highlighting the contribution and struggles of immigrants accounted for only 17%. This reinforces the misconceptions that Latin American immigrants are primarily criminals or threats, ignoring the complex economic, social, and political factors that influence most immigrants to migrate in the first place. By focusing disproportionately on negative aspects, the media creates misinformation, generating negative generalizations about
The central theme of the book Just Like Us, is that immigrants both, legal and illegal are both powerful and vulnerable members of American society, and that like everyone else they deal with the daily struggles of life, with the added stress of being told, who deserves to live in America. I believe the author was trying to personalize immigration, by looking at the four top girls and their struggles, as well as looking at their families, critics, and advocates, who all affect or are affected by one of the most sensitive social issues of modern America. And the perspective of the author gives the reader insight into And what happens when we don’t agree. Moreover, the author includes viewpoints other than the four girls, including those opposing
Ruth Gomberg-Muñoz’s, Labor and Legality is a book written on the Mexican immigrant network in the U.S. She centers it on the Lions, a group of Mexican men from Leon, Mexico that all share their lives and help explain the many networks and strategies that are used in order to excel and gain happiness. There have been many different sorts of misconceptions about immigrants, and in recent years about undocumented immigrants from Mexico. The U.S. has made a sort of war on illegal immigrants and has made it a seemingly high priority in the media and in politics. Therefore, many Americans have been mislead and ill-informed about the history of immigrants/undocumented immigrants. Gomberg-Muñoz’s Labor and Legality helps set us straight. She unveils undocumented immigrants for the people that they are instead of the criminals that the media leads many to believe. Although she doesn’t have a wide range of participants for her study, I believe that she addresses many of the misconceptions and just plain ignorance that American people have of people that are undocumented; why stereotypes are supported by the people themselves, why politicians include stronger illegal immigration laws, and everything in between. Many of her topics reveal a sort of colonialism that the U.S. practices on Mexico; the exploitation of undocumented peoples to the benefit of the U.S. through economics, hypocritical laws and campaigns, and the racist and prejudice consequences.
America is deemed the land of the free and the home of the brave. The very fabric of this great nation was built upon immigrants from the Pilgrims landing on Plymouth Rock to the millions of immigrants landing at Ellis Island. America is known as a melting pot of many different cultures and ethnic groups with roughly 11.7 million illegal immigrants living here. There has been a long standing love/hate relationship with the issue of immigration. It has long been debated as to whether or not we should continue to allow immigrant into our country so freely.
The debate of who should be allowed to enter the United States has been an issue for many years, with the large number of people entering and living here illegally this has become a significant talking point amongst the candidates in this presidential election. But are their views something that should be shared and supported by Christians today? There are definitely two opposing views from Christians on this topic. I will present both views regarding illegal immigrants in the United States and then I will present my own opinion on this topic.
Which makes a twisted kind of sense. The man captured the attention of an entire country when he started off his presidential campaign railing against undocumented immigrants, and has made a name for himself as a presidential candidate spouting off hateful drivel. It’s been a ratings boon for networks, a rallying cry for conservatives and self-congratulatory bonanza for liberals that have taken to Facebook to bash him.
In the United States of America, there is a big problem with illegal immigration. Illegal immigration is an enormous issue that during the 2016 presidential primary debates. It was a problem when President Obama took office eight years ago, and it is an even greater problem now that he is getting ready to leave office. Most Americans want the border closed, but that will only solve half the problem. The other half of the problem can be solved by deporting the illegal immigrants that are already in the United States. Illegal immigrants are taking American jobs. Therefore, negatively affecting the economy. Furthermore, they have a higher crime rate than the average U.S. citizen. Yet, supporters view illegal immigrants as a good thing because it helps grow the economy by doing jobs nobody else will do. Besides helping the economy, supporters believe that illegal immigrants are not criminals and will not do any more harm than coming into the country illegally. Most U.S. citizen believe that the U.S. immigration policy needs to be reformed. Illegal immigrants should not be allowed to stay in the United States because they take away U.S. jobs, they negatively affect the economy, and contribute to crime.
Fellow Americans, The United States faces many complications. I believe that our country is failing at doing its job and that compared to America years ago, we are worse off than before. Our country as a whole isn't the only thing that is failing, our educational system has been a problem since 2009. Illegal immigrants are also a problem. They contribute to another issue the US faces, this issue is the National Debt. That being said, I do believe that every problem our country faces can be solved or at least prevented.
The way in which this story is told I find is very unique. The Book Of Unknown Americans is written in a first person perpective where each chaacter gets to personnaly introduce themselves and explain their life story. When reading this book it almost feels as if you are talking one on one with a close friend. Henriquez has a way of pulling your right through text and submerging you into the same word as the characters throughout the book. Henriquez makes a point of keeping the characters thoughts and emotions very clear, its as if we are the character. Its very easy to realte to eachinduvidual in the story, which is purposefully done by the auther in order to make Henriquez message clear on what she wants us, the reader, to take away from her fictional book. No matter where we come from, we all want the same things in life, to find love, safety, and a sense of purpose inthis world. Just becasue osmeone is a foreigner does not mean that their ambitions what they strive for in life are foreign concepts as well. We are all human and must treat one another as nothing less.
Immigration is one hot topic in today’s conversation and society. Many think that immigrants coming to America are taking many jobs away from who need them. Some also think that there are jobs being taken away are not ones that Americans would not perform due to the horrible working conditions, low pay, and lack of important medical coverage. The immigration issue has come to a point where the United States must make a decision to spend a lot of money to curtail the amount of immigrants coming here.
