The American revolution or the Revolutionary War took place in 1775. Years of tension built up the war between the Colonist and the British. The colonist wanted the same rights as British people, but the British Government had many notable taxations on the colonist, that pushed them over the edge. From its very inception, America has relied on the labor of slaves. When the first colonists arrived in Jamestown, Virginia in 1619, they brought supplies (tools, animals, seeds, etc.), their beliefs and cultures, and slaves. As the Revolutionary War was being fought, there was a redefinition and expansion of freedom for white men as well as a proliferation in the use of the word “slavery” because many Americans began to view their relationship with Britain as a form of enslavement . In the process of establishing America as an independent republic, the colonists were granted their freedom from the British government while slavery and the slave trade thrived. For many of the founding fathers, it was easy to justify slavery because of their racism and hypocrisy as well as the fact that their primary disagreement was with the slave trade, not slavery (the act of enslaving). As the juxtaposition between American freedom and slavery became interwoven in American history and politics, it restructured the social system and allowed for the proliferation of an oppressive race-based social system (as opposed to the former class system) and laid the foundation for the Civil War.
In 1787 representatives from twelve of the thirteen states met in Pennsylvania for a constitutional convention. Delegates voiced great concern over the protection of individual liberties and personal property. For southern delegates one of the most important liberties was the right to own slaves. While they wanted a federal government that would protect their rights, they did not want a governing body that would emancipate their slaves. There was a notation that the pursuit of happiness was tied to property. As strongly as people might adhere to the notion of liberty and freedom, they adhere just as strongly to the notion of property.

During the beginning of Colonial America, there were many people who migrated from Europe to settle the new founded American Continent. They traveled from Europe to escape the laws, taxes, demands, and nobility brought upon them at the hands of King George III and Parliament. The Sons of Liberty was the name given to a group of patriots who worked underground to defend the rights of the colonists against the British government in the years before the American Revolution. They represented the ideals of liberty and justice, approving all the grievances and complaints of the colonists.
