Contemporary social movements such as Arab Spring and Kony 2012 use the Internet and social media as potential tools towards change. But why are some more successful than others. This paper argues that when news outlets see the potential for change, they “premediate” (Richard Grusin) its possibilities, and make that change ever more possible in their coverage. On the other hand, extant stories that are more reactionary do not get the same amount of new exposure, and remain static. In other words, our media - not just social media, but news organizations - play a great role in shaping current events. I will compare and contrast the unfolding of the Arab Spring story, and how little changed regarding Kony 2012, as cases in point. …show more content…
The best example of premediation is the movie Minority Report. The plot of the movie is set in the near future where they are able to arrest murderers before they commit their crimes. This division is called “Precrime” and the main character who works in this division is accused of committing murder before it even happened. They premediated this event saying that it could happen or will happen in the future.
One of Grusin’s first examples of premediation, was the Iraq war. In his example he talks about how the constant premediation of having a war with Iraq was shown in the various news medias which had started even before we declared war on Iraq. The reason that Grusin gives is that they made it seem war was inevitable and that when we did go to war with Iraq, the public would would feel as if we had already been in the war with Iraq and there would be little opposition to the war. It was said that the protests to this war was the largest socially networked opposition to the war but because of the premediation and the ineffectiveness of the protests many people knew that the war was going to happen anyways. Another example of premediation was the occupy wall street movement and how a contemporary social movement was formed
In Grendel, the dragon tells us that fate is, in fact, totally decided ahead of time:
People are influenced by decisions made in the past. Every situation that a person comes upon can change what happens in the future and because of human's ability to choose we can gain or lose from it. In The Road by Cormac McCarthy, decisions made by himself and others around him in the past alter the fathers future.
The prefix -pre is a abbreviation for predict. Pre Crime is a organization that predicts crime, and precogs are people that predict crime as well. Minority Report also has a paradox because Agatha claims that John has a choice to change his future. Pre Crime says that everything the precogs predict is accurate, although John killed Crow a few minutes after he was predicted to. Also, Agatha’s visions showed Lamar killing John, but Lamar actually ended up killing himself.
In this chapter he talks about the swine flu ‘epidemics’ of the late seventies and of 2009 serve as an example of how extrapolation can lead to improper predictions, particularly if you assume that things will keep proceeding as they have in the recent past. It notes that self-fulfilling and self-canceling prophecies complicate the process of determining the future, by altering which directions the given traits proceed and altering their progress. The efforts to change the progress of certain events, helping the good and thwarting the bad, mean that many traits change their course from their initial progress (as when the swine flu outbreaks were stopped shortly after starting). Self-fulfilling predictions can be caused by the sheer act of releasing the prediction. For example, when news about H1N1 flu is broadcast, more people go to doctors and more H1N1 is identified. Self-cancelling predictions can also occur. Navigation systems show where the least traffic is but simultaneously invalidate the route by sending all traffic there en masse. Chapter 7 deals with the dangers of extrapolation and overly simplistic assumptions, using misfiring flu-predictions as an example. Also discussed here are self-fulfilling and self-cancelling predictions. Often the very act of prediction can alter the way people behave (an observation that also John Adams makes with regard to risk - a form of prediction, of course -
Furthermore, this premise means either things that are going to happen are foreseen by god or what god foresees will happen. In both cases humans free will is gone or either destroyed.
Here is al list of verses supporting predestination: John 8:6-7; Rom 11:5-7; John 6:12, 37-39, 44, 46, 65; John 15:16; John 3:5-7, 19-20; John 15:16-19; 2 Cor 5:14-17; 2 Tim 1:9; Matt. 20:16; John 8:34; Romans 8:6-7; and 2 Tim 2:26.
Within Christian theology, the concept of Predestination can be defined as ‘the doctrine that God has foreordained all things, especially that God has elected certain souls to eternal salvation.’ (Mifflin, 2011) After studying accounts of Predestination from St Augustine of Hippo, Martin Luther and John Calvin, it can be specified that I am not convinced by the concept of Predestination. I have formed my answer on the grounds that the concept of Predestination raises too many issues for it to be plausible, for example it questions our free will, moral responsibility and the nature of God. Furthermore, arguments against the concept of Predestination from schools of thought such as the Arminians and Laudinism seem far more convincing to myself.
He has foreseen a lot of the things that have happened, with technology and government oppression. He knew that technology, in the wrong hands, could bring about a police, something we are getting closer to each day, if not already living in one.
Self-fulfilling prophecy is an idea that becomes true when acted upon (p. 88). A real life example of self-fulfilling prophecy that happened to me is when my I went to the beach with my wife and children (5 boys). I do not let my youngest son swim far because he may drown. He began to insisting to go out with his brothers so I decided to let him go. By the time he was half way he almost drowned. Because of this we bought him arm floaties and now he is able to be with his brothers. Another real life example is when I bought a bike for my boys. I did not think that my older boys were going to have a problem riding the bike. When I finished put the bike together and made that they were sturdy, I give it to the older boys and they were able to

Stephen Hawking questions the theory of predetermination in his essay Is Everything Determined? Hawking questions the problems he finds within the theory and responds to them creating a sense of confirmation. Leaving readers confident in his work until he answers the question is everything determined with a yes but we would never know because we don’t know what was determined.
The theorists who label an individual as Predestined do so because it appears that he or she committed a crime out of helplessness and the seemingly forceful temptation coming from their environment. As opposed to the perpetrator feeling as though they are the victim (The Victimized Actor), they feel as though they have been left with no choice and must commit said-crime regardless of potential outweigh of risks or
Gray: In addition to Albert Camus arguments, everything that you do in life is predetermined. As humans, we all know what we want/should do ahead of time and make plans for it accordingly to our schedule. If something were to halt you plan from happening, as a pessimistic fatalistic person, you would already have expected that to happen and knew it was inevitable.
When analyzing the role of social media in American society, several questions come to mind. What is social media and are these social media and networking sites helpful to the people of America; can these sites be used to enhance or do they intrude in the relationships people have with others, and can they be integrated into their daily lives successfully. As the world becomes more and more technology friendly, the internet has transformed into a place that nearly everyone can go to get away. With the constant click of a mouse for some is all it takes to relieve the stress of their day.
