Obedience is an act of faith; Disobedience is the result of unbelief. Obeying to a higher authority shows that someone has faith in the judgment of the one giving the orders, while it is the result of unbelief when someone disobeys against the word of those who are higher in authority. In some cases it is necessary to obey to the orders one is given, but in life there is always the tough decision one must come to, whether to obey the authority and cower down or disobey their request and do the right thing. I believe that obedience is the conventional way of life and is needed in a day to day basis, although I do believe that disobedience is needed during certain situations. Obedience is the process of bowing down and taking orders one is given. …show more content…
Many obey to conformity because they are afraid to speak their own mind afraid to be alone. Going against conformity means you are making the bold decision to stand up against the majority of people alone speaking your mind and thoughts that those around you do not agree on. In many cases obeying to higher authority is the best way to go, but disobeying is needed in your day to day life. In the article “The Power Trip” by Jonah Lehrer mentions that leaders are chosen by their good traits, but their traits disappears when they raise to power. Instead of being nice, honest, and outgoing they become mean, cruel, and hostile towards others (Lehrer 654). When a higher authority becomes this way it takes a great act of disobedience to stand up and release people back into freedom. For someone to be a good leader and show that they are someone you can obey you must have just authority. In “The Follower Problem” by writer David Brooks he mentions that “Lincoln and Jefferson are presented as the embodiments of just authority. They are strong and powerful but also humanized” what Brooks is saying is that their can be good in obedience, but those who want it should be strong and powerful, but also understanding and civilized. With these traits a leader can provide the responsibilities needed to successfully guide others to a life of
“I don’t believe we were put here with all of our differences to conform to a uniform state of mind” ~Sonya Teclat. Conformity is when people change to act the same as other people in their society. The government, media, and social groups are a big part of the society. These things encourage people to conform. One of the books that have people conforming is Among the Hidden by Margaret Peterson. In Among the Hidden Jen, one of the characters is very outgoing and brave. Luke another character is very shy, once he meets Jen he conforms to be brave like her. In addition, society encourages conformity through government, media, and social groups.
Conformity is a form of social influence, when we conform we act and think like members of our group. Often people even alter or change their personal beliefs to match those around them. When we conform we feel pressured to fit in with others, to be a part of the majority. While we may still have contradicting beliefs towards things, we change our behaviors and actions to match what everybody else is
Obedience as an act can be traced back to the very beginnings of human history. The common belief has always been to obey authority at all cost. This act has never been questioned because authority corresponds to the common belief that respecting authority and obeying them will lead you to success in all aspects of life. Obedience is not defined to specific situations and its context can be portrayed in various ways. For example, Erich Fromm writes in his essay, “Disobedience as a Psychological and Moral Problem; “Human history began with an act of disobedience, and it is not unlikely that it will be terminated by an act of disobedience.” This statement suggests that everything which we perceived to be
According to the Oxford dictionary Obedience is defined as a compliance with an order, request, or law or submission to another's authority. In many situations authority demonstrates the ability to control man to go against their beliefs in what is morally right. Due to fear and the insecurities of man, authority may push the limits of society to a point where the individual may temporarily give up their identity. This is proven by The Stanford Prison experiment

“Conformity is the jailer of freedom and the enemy of growth” John F. Kennedy. In both cases the conformist and the nonconformist face problems because of their choices. When you are placed in situations that can effect you, do you chose to conform or not? Boxer, a horse from the book, Animal Farm, is an example of someone who chose to conform with everyone one else under the oppressor. Martin Luther King Jr. on the other hand stood out amongst the masses against all of the people that tried to keep him down. It is undeniable that these two beings are completely different. One chose to conform and the other did the opposite. Conformity and nonconformity can be both good and bad things. While this is true, both result in long-lasting effects. Conformity is a double-edged sword that stabs those in the line of power, while also slashing the hands of those who reside under the authority. There is no way to avoid this.
Conformity has always been part of our society and influences the trends we have today. Throughout the years, our society has evolved and jumped from one social norm to another due to great leaders and the power of demand they had, such as Martin Luther King Jr. during the civil rights era. His voice left an imprint on America and showed others his perspective on what equality should be and most conformed to his ideology and made America what it is today. Despite the peaceful ways to persuade, to achieve a person’s mind and to comply with a different societal norm, people with such high power turn from persuasion to oppression and dehumanize people in the process.
The portrayal of Rowlandson's captors develops just as she develops through her imprisonment. Rowlandson's verbiage to describe those capturing her were strong for a woman from a Puritanism faith. She used phrases such as "merciless heathens"(258), "barbarous creatures"(259), and "merciless enemies"(259). It seemed that as her emotions ran high with her circumstances that her words became more harsh. When she felt like there was no other believers near to her, her terminology for the Indians was as bleak as her view of her circumstances. "having no Christian friend near me, either to comfort or help me. Oh, I may see the wonderful power of God, that my Spirit did not utterly sink under my affliction"(Rowlandson
People do many different things in attempt to fit in, even while wanting to make a difference. However, that person could be too afraid to do so, and instead go along with the crowd. This is conformity, trying to blend in with society just because they’re too afraid to speak out. A person can live a fulfilled life by not conforming to society’s standards and opinions, and by living their life bravely.
A conformist is a person just accepts the normal behavior of others without speaking out. These people affect their environments positively and negatively. They can impact their environments in a positive way by not saying anything and going through the motions. This prevents their “leaders” from retaliating harmfully due to their willingness to speak out. But with the positive it is also a negative in the situation. The conformist and his or hers will continue to be disrespected as a whole.
According to Webster Dictionary, conformity is defined as, “in compliance of rules, laws, or standards.” Mark Twain’s, “Cone-pone Opinions,” demonstrates how society reacts to new conformities; individuals eventually conform to popular ideas and inevitably abandon these ideas for something greater. Twain states, “It is our nature to conform; it is force which not many can successfully resist.” (Twain 2). The reason people conform is not for self-approval, but rather, for the approval of others.
People have been changing their behavior or obeying someone else’s commands for years. This continues today in our everyday lives. Conformity and obedience seem similar but differ in several ways. Conformity is defined by psychologists as a change in behavior or belief to accord with others. Similar to this, is obedience. Obedience is defined acting in accordance with a direct order or command. Normally people conform to reap a reward or to avoid punishment. If we comply with a direct order or command it is considered obedience. Most of the time when people comply, it is to be accepted among others so they are not seen as outsiders. On the other hand, when we obey, we are obeying a command an authority figure
Whether one acknowledges it or not we all obey authority in one way or another. It is something that is embedded into us from the day that we are born. We begin to become obedient to our parents, elders, our teachers, law enforcement, the list goes and on. Authority has a major impact on human behavior. This is especially evident in the case of the concentration camps in Germany. There were hundreds if not thousands of people following Hitlers unethical orders, and clearly they outnumbered the one person controlling it all. However, they did not go against him but they simply followed his orders. For a person to obey authority, one has to accept that it is legal, and right for the order to be made of them. It also involves somebody of a higher power or status to be involved in making the commands.
This does not necessarily mean that all disobedience is good and all obedience is bad. That would ignore the relationship between obedience and disobedience. An act of obedience to one principle is usually and act
Once upon a time, there was a being called Mr. Jones, who was the first of his kind to break through to our reality. Jones was able to inhabit human bodies and utilized this skill as a means to experience our world with human senses. Regrettably for Jones, though, the initial people he was able to inhabit couldn 't handle his occupation. In fact, they became so overwhelmed by the entity 's take-over of their bodies that they were driven to self-destruction by suicide.
