Throughout American and world history women have been mistreated and disrespected, this still happens to this day. A famous piece of American history photography known as the Migrant Mother shows the importance, power, and strength behind most women in this difficult Great Depression time. However white powerful men run not only the government but also the social classes. Respecting women was sadly not a top priority of this time period. The literary work Of Mice and Men written by John Steinbeck in 1937 the author uses setting, themes, and character to portray different themes. The corrupting power of women during The Great Depression is the most influential theme found in the short story Of Mice and Men. Early on in the novel the reader can infer that women of this time are not respected and are thought to be unintelligent by being told to stay in the house all day. This act of disrespect shown to Curley’s wife by an African American stable buck is shocking because at this time racism is very present and for an African American to tell anyone what to do is surprising and offensive.
