Going into the dark and facing rough patches is part of life. It is a phase in life that one conquers, that one HAS to conquer to learn about life as a whole. After this so called dark time has came and left, there is the light that seeps through, allowing one to see the good in life. Allowing one to see the people that were there for them when they were at their low, showing them the support that received, however inevitably pushing them away in the sole time of need. In the essay “The Politics of the Brokenhearted” written by American author Parker Palmer, he heavily addresses the fact that people need to learn again that it is okay to have someone there when you are struggling. That being in the light will come soon enough, the dark times only …show more content…
After a storm there is a calm. After the night there is a morning, and after an end there is a new beginning. There is always going to be cause and effect in this world. One thing happens, either good or bad, and there is a reaction, a side effect. The essay is addressing the world-wide issue that connects democracy and simple real-world problems. The points being proven is the fact with realistics in today's world. How today’s world effects every little thing surrounding us. Another big fact of the essay, leads upon the bitter idea of someone else being there for you, someone who acknowledges the situation without spitting biase across one side of the parties. This essay is supposed to teach others about the stressful and dark times, it forces one to become into contact of a different of a different type of dark time. In the essay, “The Politics of the Broken Heart”, author Parker Palmer grazes on the side of “dark times”, and “seeing the light” and that these two trips aren’t that far apart, that the drugs are not needed when moving on/stages. Being able to tell good times against hard times is a skill that one needs to possess when lusting to become apart of this ever so crazy time
One thing that is important to know is that when things get tough to carry on. During tough times most people get lost in the bad things that happened, but what they should do is keep going and realize that things will get better. In NightJohn by Gary Paulsen, shows that people can preserver through tough time and keep going.
With hate burning in everyone’s heart, fueled by political and social tensions, it is important that the fire is extinguished. Their hearts must open to allow new ideas and viewpoints to flow in, extinguishing the fire. In the prelude chapter titled “The Politics of the Brokenhearted,” Parker Palmer addresses the reason why our nation is in constant fear of each other, and the social divide that grows larger by the day. In this chapter, Palmer’s purpose is to encourage the nation to view the opposition with an open heart in order to put out that fire that burns inside. Through personal accounts, historical references, and present day examples, Palmer shows how our nation controls the fate of democracy, and what they need to do to keep it standing.
“Hard times are about losing spirit, and hope, and what happens when dreams dry up.” (225) In the novel Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse, Billie Jo, a young girl living in the Oklahoma Panhandle, finds herself in a tough situation when she sees her mother, the “glue” of her family die, and her beloved farm fail. This situation causes Billie Jo to look for hope to help her get through this tough stage of her life. Similar to Billie Jo, during a person’s life, when he or she is in a hardship or in a tough time, usually, the only thing that gets them through is hope.
But even in the darkest hours, when hope seems to be dwindling, there is always an opportunity to
In the era of the contemporary United States, a country that has had the longest standing democracy, we are used to thinking very highly of its system. However, throughout our history, there have been a couple of critics to the system of democracy. It comes as no surprise that democracy does have its issues. One of the first pieces of literature where democracy was mentioned and analyzed at a deeper level was The Republic by Plato. This ancient Greek philosopher did not completely agree with democracy, regardless of the fact that ancient Athens was the first civilization that gave rise to it. In fact, in a numerical list that he composes on which are the best ways of ruling, Plato puts democracy at one of the lowest levels. In order, Plato’s list of types of government from most desirable to least desirable looks like this: 1.) Republic (The ideal city) 2.) Timocracy 3.) Oligarchy 4.) Democracy 5.) Tyranny. Additionally, In The Republic, Plato tells us his beliefs and values on certain aspects of life through the eyes of Socrates. So, even though Plato himself does not appear in The Republic and instead Socrates does, nonetheless, Plato and Socrates shared the same ideology when it came to democracy. As we know, Plato did not agree with democracy. As a result, in this paper, I will explore the greatest intellectual strengths and weaknesses of Plato’s view on democracy.
The general understanding of democracy is that it is a state of leadership where citizens of a country participate equally either directly or by representative individuals in the establishment of laws, which run the society. However, like many other forms of leadership, democracy has its cons and may not give the citizens the necessary freedoms that they think they have. Different philosophers have different insights on democracy in terms of concepts such as liberty, which they embraced. This paper will look at Benjamin Barber and Joseph Schumpeter’s idea of democracy contrasting their definition in terms of citizenship, obligation, rights and duties of each individual in the society declaring whose idea of democracy creates a compelling vision (Terchek & Conte, 2001).
Adversity has a way of bringing up challenges unexpectedly, most people shrink away from it and get consumed, but when they push through it people come out stronger than they were before.
Democracy is a unique type of government, and the purpose of this essay is to illustrate the strengths and weaknesses that a democratic government provides. I will detail that many components of this type of society are both strengths and weakness as each component has beneficial aspects as well as unavoidable pitfalls.
What is a perfect form of government? What are politics and why do they matter? Now that you have thought about it, you may have thought this. The perfect government is one that does not internally fight itself over an opinion on a topic. It serves its citizens faithfully and cares for their thoughts and opinions. Politics are supposed to influence the government to make it better and to support its citizens. Politics helps us make a better government. Do you think America fits that description? We should not because American politics are broken and ineffective at their main purpose.
The author has been able to fulfill the target of the book, which is to test and answer the questions raised by critics through the provision of evidence of the reason no democracy exists at the present. The author presents the arguments in a chronological way that gives a better understanding of the past, today, and prospective future of democracy. The root of the present democracy is stated in the book and lays the basis of the other arguments in the book. Dahl argues that there are conditions that any state should attain in order for it to be considered as a democratic
one essential conviction, expressed in the word democracy itself: that power should be in the hands of the people. Although democracy today has been slightly inefficient in this idea, with the wealthy, elite class challenging this right, “it nevertheless claims for itself a fundamental validity that no other kind of society shares….” To completely understand the structure of democracy, one must return to the roots of the practice itself, and examine the origins in ancient Greece, the expansion in the Roman Empire, and how these practices combined make what we recognize as today’s democratic government.
Many of us had been though a couple of rough times and some pretty amazing ones as well. Difficult times for most people can take away their energy, taken away emotions, and break a person’s spirit. The good times on the other hand can lift someone’s spirit up, boost their self-esteem, and show signs of our capability. This is called self-efficacy, it connects with four of the 6 dimensions of health mental, emotional, spiritual, and social wellness. These effects tell people to feel good about themselves, help them control their social anxiety, and maintain a positive lookout on life.
Indeed, this tension between the benefits (and pitfalls) of a globalized world and the notion of democracy, as experienced in the nation-state, is a common focus of
Winston Churchill once remarked that “democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried”. In agreement with his statement, this paper will examine the problems of democratic governments using specific examples, and compare it to the failure of fascist governments in Nazi Germany and Italy and communist governments in the Soviet Union and China.
