The idea of political culture is found within the state’s history. The history of the state is impacted by the people settled in the region, religious backgrounds, and geography. The history of the state influences the attitudes and beliefs that people hold regarding their political system. Daniel Elazar theorized a connection between the states’ history and attitude towards government by explaining differences in government between states. Every state is different with some common ground. Elazar’s theory divides states into three types: moralistic, traditionalistic and individualistic. The state’s constitution defines the powers of government with political culture bias. Because of the state constitution, the political culture …show more content…
The competition of politics is weak since there are limited people who are involved and the elite are assured their status. Some traditionalistic states are Texas, Georgia, and Arizona. However, there are states that see the role of government as a business. Individualistic states are located in the middle parts of the country, parts of the West, and parts of the East. The citizens in these states tend to see politics as a profession who only seeks power in government. The role of government is to be a service provider, however, leaves politics to the professionals. Due to the lack of involvement by citizens, there is a high level corruption in this type of state. For example, Governor James McGreevey was investigated for bribes. The variation of government is due to political culture. The people of the United States have expectations of a state. For example, during elections Texas is expected to vote for republicans because of the state’s political culture. The roles and powers of the states’ legislatures, governors, and judiciaries are established by the states’ political culture. The purposes of state legislatures are the same throughout the United States. The roles of legislatures are to pass laws, create polices, represent the citizens within their districts, and oversee the governor, executive branch, and some private businesses. However, the topics
Individualism puts the individual at the forefront of decision making power (SUO, 2016). Although we do not have specific power in the decision making process, we have a representative form of democracy where elected officials speak for the people, however, the individual has a strong voice in the American form of democracy (Borade, 2012).
Chapter one of The American Political Tradition by Richard Hofstadter is centered on the Founding Fathers. The very beginning of the chapter says that the Constitutional Convention was trying to create a government that would pay debts and avoid currency inflation. The Democratic ideas that the Founding Fathers were so against appealed mostly to less privileged classes, and not at all to the higher classes. This chapter says that the Founding Fathers thought that if no constitutional balance were achieved, one specific class or would take over others. Three advantages of a good constitutional government were listed in this chapter as well. One: keep order against majority rule. Two: a representative government. Three: aristocracy and democracy
Our government is a federal form of government, a federation. States yield their sovereignty to the federal government. The government would have no power if all the states were sovereign. The states would most likely ignore the government because they would have no power over them. An example is the government that preceded the Constitution, the Articles of Confederation that included 13 independent little nations. They gave the federal government little power and there were many disadvantages. Each state had its own currency. Doing business between states was difficult because of this. That’s why the Articles were replaced with the Constitution. A confederation was replaced with a federation. It was set up with a supposed balance. A state politician doesn’t always like the federal laws but that is what keeps it balanced. It would be confusing and probably dysfunctional if every state had its own immigration and foreign policy. We all just witnessed each states different opinion on gay marriage.
Regional political sub-cultures are the trends people in specific regions of the country have toward their government—how it should function and what they feel it should achieve. As far as the state of Florida is concerned, based on recent voter turnout and demography it can be concluded that the state is divided sub-culturally and has been in flux since the theory of political culture began.
Richard Hofstadter examines the political beliefs of the founding fathers in the first chapter of the American Political Tradition. Ideas thought about by most Americans to be the center of our organization, our founders viewed liberty, democracy, and property, as evil. The composition can be depicted to be vicious as well, because liberty, democracy, and property are linked to the United States Constitution.
In the year of 1776, the United States became an independent country. At that moment, the great men who fought for its independence began to create the government and shape American politics. In Richard Hofstadter's The American Political Tradition and the Men Who Made It, he identifies twelve of the most influential men and the political traditions they created, including the Founding Fathers who started it all. Additionally, Hofstadter informs the reader of other significant government officials including Andrew Jackson and his democracy, the progressive, trustbuster Theodore Roosevelt, and ending with Franklin D. Roosevelt and his programs of the New Deal. Richard Hofstadter's ideas are brilliantly
Daniel Elazar’s three categories of state political cultures are moralistic, individualistic, and traditionalistic (Smith & Greenblatt , 2016). Moralistic culture is defined in the textbook, a political culture that views politics and government as the means to achieve the collective good (Smith & Greenblatt , 2016). Individualist culture is described as a political culture that views politics and government as just another way to achieve individual goals (Smith & Greenblatt , 2016). Traditionalistic culture is explained as a political culture that views politics and government as the means of maintaining the existing social order (Smith & Greenblatt , 2016). I believe the states can have mixed features of all three of Elazar’s types of

Throughout the world there are many diverse political cultures. A political culture is the attitudes, beliefs or practices among a group of likeminded individuals. (Giardino pg. 27) There are different categories that embrace a political culture like an Individualistic, traditionalistic and moralistic. An individualistic culture is one that prefers less government involvement. The traditionalists’ culture maintains government as the social and economic hierarchy and does not like change. The moralistic culture favors public good and it revolves around social issues. In shaping a political culture demographics such as population size, growth, distribution and diversity are essential to determine how a state is in any of the three categories. Society is strongly affected by decisions of who, what and when does an individual receive any types of goods or services. Government is the structure, buildings and institutions that are held within politics.
The structure of a governments and party systems are of crucial importance for the functioning and well stable effective government. In this case let’s take example of United States and United Kingdom.
The Government is greatly affected by political culture, especially who gets elected. Religion is a big factor. Religions have different beliefs and this causes some candidates
When looking into the ideas of political theorists it is important to the use of political concepts that may play an important role in what the theorists are suggesting and also how they may affect the relationship between to state and the individuals living within a state. The concepts that will be looked at within this essay are: power, authority and also accountability.
The political system of America is very different from other developed and developing democracies. Most notable is the increased power bestowed on the upper house of the parliament, the extensive power held by the Supreme Court and the dominance demonstrated by only two major parties. In the United States, third parties have the least influence on the world’s most developed democracy’s political structure. In this democracy, people are under the US Constitution of the governmental system as well as state government and other units of local government. Local government entails counties, districts and municipalities. The evolution of the American political party system has come a long way; with Hamilton and Jefferson being regarded as the founder fathers of the modern party system. These were heads of the Federalist and Anti-Federalist groups in the 18th century of American politics. Ever since, the country has maintained a party system that has two main parties that are relatively stable. These are Democrats and Republicans and have remained in contest for election every time since the 1860 presidential elections. Initially, the Republican Party was the dominant party but the Democrats later gained dominance. However, the two parties became closely competitive and neither of them has been notably dominant since the 1970s (O'Connor & Sabato, n.d).
A culture can be defined as a way of life of a group of people- their behaviors, beliefs, values that are passed along by communication and imitation from one generation to the next. It also includes the customs, arts, literature, morals/values and traditions of a particular society or group (Virginia Encyclopedia). Culture can also be considered as a way of thinking, behaving, or working that exists in places or organizations. This topic is of huge importance to our society mainly in the state of
