The Negative Effects of Grief
Grieving is the process in which one goes through after feeling deep sorrow for themselves or others. Grief is a seven stage process that covers shock, denial, anger, bargaining, guilt, depression, and acceptance. The stages of grief are not in a specific order, but all grieving ends with acceptance. Although grieving varies in both time and severity, one must survive the seven stages of grief in order to recover from sorrow. Yet, recovery comes with negative consequences. Grieving causes one to experience emotional pain, erratic behaviors, and isolation. The symptoms of grief are shown in Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” and Hansberry’s “a Raisin in the Sun”. Grief is often experienced after one loses a loved one. Death is a natural part of life, but there is still a time needed to sever the emotional connection of a relationship. Dorian Gray starts off as an attractive socialite, but after meeting lord Henry Wotton, obsesses over his beauty. This obsession transforms into grief, after Dorian realizes that he will not be young and beautiful forever, and will age and wither away. Dorian’s grief drives him to deceive, lie, and murder those he loves. Dorian feels remorse because of his actions and goes through a dark stage of depression, that ends with suicide. “On the Rainy River” by Tim O'Brien also demonstrates how grief can change a person. O'Brien is fearful when receiving a draft notice from the U.S. military. After recently graduating from college, O'Brien wants nothing more than to start his life and make his family proud. However, he does not want to serve and go through the horror that is war. O'Brien also does not want to be seen as a coward for refusing, so he decides to leave the country and save his
