“The only rock I know that stays steady, the only institution I know that works, is the family.”(Lacocca,Lee). “The Treasure of Lemon Brown” , written by Walter Dean Myers and The Pearl, by John Steinbeck both have the same genres of fiction and the theme of change. The Pearl illustrates a family that lives in poverty and has a chance to be rich, but decides to stay poor for the sake of their family. “The Treasure of Lemon Brown” illustrates a young defiant boy who has an experience that changes his attitude towards his dad. In both books, The Pearl and “The Treasure of Lemon Brown”, both characters go through life changing events that change the character into a different person.

“I traveled around, and one time I come home, and there was this letter saying Jesse got killed in the war. Broke my heart, it truly did. They sent back what he had with him over there, and what it was is this old mouth fiddle and these clippings. Him carrying it around with him like that told me it meant something to him. That was my treasure, and when I give it to him, he treated it just like that, a treasure. Ain’t that something?” (Myers pg. 25).This makes Greg feel bad about how he has treated his father. This makes Greg think again about his father and how his father is right for being concerned with Greg playing basketball. “Juan Tomas nodded gravely. He was the elder, and Kino looked to him for wisdom. “It is hard to know,” he said. “We do know that we are cheated from birth to the overcharge on our coffins. But we survive. You have defied not the pearl buyers, but the whole structure, the whole way of life, and I am afraid for you.” (Steinbeck, pg 54). This shows that Kino has changed because he is defining the way of life. When Kino leaves the pearl buyers office, he shows how badly he wants to be rich by rejecting the small amount of money the pearl buyer has offered. These experiences show how Greg and Kino maybe starting to change and become
Living in the tall skyscrapers and smoggy air of Harlem is very different than living in a small town with barns and grassy fields. You will see how living in Harlem effects parenting, compared to the parenting in a normal neighborhood. Randy Wilkerson, a young boy, walked the cold streets of New York on a school night after dinner. He stumbled upon an old woman with a beautiful old ring. After time went on, the old woman told Randy the back story of just how significant that ring was to her and her life. Randy, a lot like Greg Ridley, understood the importance of his life after hearing a back story from Lemon Brown’s perspective. In the story “Treasure of Lemon Brown” Walter Dean Myers, the author, establishes the theme by showing readers that what's important to someone, isn't something that has to do with money.

There was blue dye on his hands from the wild irises... that the color of the sky was a shade that could never be replicated in any photograph, just as Heaven could never be seen from the confines of Earth.” Descriptive adjectives help a reader picture the setting in their mind and also understand the mood in the story. The quote shows a similarity in the book “Two Kinds” and “The Treasure Of Lemon Brown” because the treasure of lemon brown, greg wants to do something that the father doesn't want him to do. From the book Two Kinds it shows that the girl's mother wants to be in america because that's where her dreams are. As Greg walks in he finds out that he isn't the only one in the apartment, an old man named Lemon Brown is also there. Lemon is there for a different reason though. Why does this title have a peculiar title to it and what is it about? The short story “The Treasure of Lemon Brown,” by Walter Dean Myers, is about a young boy named Greg Ridley who really struggles with school. At the time he was fourteen and failed his math class. His father would always give him lectures about how failing in school is not okay and in turn isn't aloud to play basketball. One day he got so mad that he ran away and ended up in some old run-down building with graffiti all over it. Greg has four big coming of age moments all throughout this story. Coming of age moments are big moments that happen in life. His first big moments is failing his first math class.
With the current technology on the rise and its ability to learn and track what we do, eat, whom we talk to and when we sleep it is such a big part of our daily lives that consumers don’t realize the possible dangers. The issue that come from letting these websites, computers and phones etc. can have a huge impact with our daily life. What else do these companies know about us and how much freedom and privacy do we really have. Allowing Big brother and little brother being in bed with one another. Allowing big name companies and smaller companies to have access to literally everything that we search on the internet and simply what we like is a problem.
At the beginning of the story they both felt content and happy as show in this quote “Sometimes it rose to an aching chord that caught the throat, saying this is safety, this is warmth, this is the Whole.”. They did not even speak because their understanding was so great. But after Kino found the pearl his relationship steadily deteriorates as shown in this quote “"Kino," she said huskily, "I am afraid. A man can be killed. Let us throw the pearl back into the sea." "Hush," he said fiercely. "I am a man. Hush.”. That shows that as time goes by Kino is acting ruder and harshly to Juana all because of the greed the pearl caused. Another example is "This thing is evil," she cried harshly. "This pearl is like a sin! It will destroy us," and her voice rose shrilly. "Throw it away, Kino. Let us break it between stones. Let us bury it and forget the place. Let us throw it back into the sea. It has brought evil. Kino, my husband, it will destroy us." And in the firelight her lips and her eyes were alive with her fear. But Kino's face was set, and his mind and his will were set” this quote shows that Juana is becoming increasingly fearful yet Kino is sure this is the way and is willing to do whatever is necessary to become wealthy. This causes a strain between their relation. Finally the worst thing Kino commits is the act of attacked Juana. He is described as a snake hissing at her and hitting her that makes her fall. He even continues to kick her after she has fallen and she accepts it and knows he may even murder her. This shows that Kino has broken all limits of humanity and is being consumed by
After traveling long and fighting against the whole world, first with his town filled with people trying to steal it, then fighting for the money, then against himself and finally against the trackers, he was left weak, and there was no more strength to fight anymore. “The people say that the two seemed to be removed from human experience” (Steinbeck 88). His struggles with the pearl have left him dehumanized and stripped of emotions because after so many battles with himself and others, it has ruined the pearl’s value by taking away the shine and leaving a dusty grey as all of his original plans of a wedding, new clothes and an education for Coyotito have turned into memories of traumatic moments. “And in the surface of the pearl, he saw Coyotito lying in the little cave with the top of his head shot away.” (Steinbeck 89). Family was the strongest part of his life because it was Kino’s only power throughout his life, which is why when he returns back to his village, people don’t recognize him as he walks through people unbothered by their staring eyes that glare right through the hollowed soul, making them feel scared. Whether Kino can’t feel anymore or chooses to disconnect himself from that battle is a mystery, but, he is still left as a dehumanized
He imagined a better life for his family. Despite everything that went wrong, despite people telling him to throw the pearl away, Kino continued to believe in the value and importance of the pearl. Early on Juana tried to convince Kino to get rid of the pearl, “‘This pearl is a sin! It will destroy us,’ and her voice rose shrilly ‘ throw it away.’”(John Steinbeck 38). Kino would have ordinarily taken into consideration his wife’s concerns and this was out of character. While under the spell of the pearl, It didn’t matter to him that Juana had his best interest in mind when she advised him to get rid of the pearl. Even after Kino was attacked, he was unwavering in his conviction in the value of the pearl, “but Kino’s face was set, and his will was set” Kino was given many chances to throw away the pearl, but yet he was stubborn and continued to believe in the pearl even though his world was falling apart and even though he could lose
