The Past is the Key to the Future Heather stumbled into the empty apartment. Through the walls, she could hear the sobs of the neighbours in mourning, the atmosphere filled with sorrow. Today, September 24th only marked the fourth day after the big news was announced. In her head, Heather had played and replayed the events of that day countless times, yet the truth still holds. This is the reality. Four days earlier….. You never know what to expect each day until things have played out, you don’t know when it might just be your lucky day. Although everyone is saddened by this news, some people had taken fate into their own hands. An 8th of the global population was deceased upon five days of receiving the news. The first day the news was released in which we call the Big One, was the day that Earth had exploded into chaos. Approximately 10,000 people died of heart attacks just upon receiving the dreadful news. Many more committed suicide, crimes and the chaos claim the lives of numerous others. By now things have settled down, but the changes in the atmosphere are subtle. Now, outside activity is strictly monitored, each person only allowed to be outside for 30 minutes each day. Not only that, many people are already showing side effects of the changing air qualities at ground level, developing a sickness that makes your lungs collapse. This was only the beginning of something that will develop to be much more disastrous. After setting down her bag by the door, Heather flipped open the TV again to check on the updated news, she was shocked. The US government had declared that they are using their nuclear bombs to end their problems once and for all, and offered no further explanation. Heather knew the aftermath of unleashing such a powerful biological weapon would be catastrophic. Not to say that Heather’s small town in Ontario would disappear with no signs of existence.
