Is it more important to stay true to those you love or do what’s right according to the law? In other words, is loyalty more important than justice? Loyalty is more important, without question. People care about their friends and family and will do anything to make sure they are safe and protected. This is especially true when people don’t like the laws and think they are unfair or discriminatory. If you don’t like the laws why should you have to follow it, especially where your loved ones might be negatively affected? For instance, in the book “The Outsiders” by S.E Hinton several of the main characters are Greasers, a gang of people who stick together no matter what even if it means breaking the law. Johnny, one of the Greasers, was a friend of Ponyboy. Several Socs (a rival gang of the Greasers) including Bob, Randy, and a couple of their friends were drowning Ponyboy in a pond at the park. Johnny thought that they would kill Ponyboy so he took out his switchblade and killed Bob. Johnny explained “I had to they were drowning you Ponyboy. They might have killed you.” Johnny risked breaking the law (and potentially being charged with murder) by killing Bob in order to save his friend’s life. Also, from the book “The Outsiders” a Greaser named Dally was being loyal to Ponyboy and Johnny instead of following the laws. He was being loyal to them and not obeying the law (by not turning them into the authorities) when he gave Ponyboy and Johnny a hideout after they killed Bob. S.E Hinton stated that “We’re almost as close as brothers.” That means that they are being loyal and protecting each other even if it means potentially breaking the law. “We gotta win that fight tonight,” Dally said. As stated by S.E Hinton “His voice was hard.” “We Gotta get even with the Socs. For Johnny.” That means that they are fighting for Johnny even if it meant hurting other people. From the book “Mama Went to Jail for the Vote” a girl loved her mom and walked in her footsteps. Mama was loyal to other women. Mama didn’t think it was fair that women couldn’t vote. She got arrested for protesting for her own rights. Mama was willing to go to jail for her beliefs. In the book “Yellow Star” by Carmen Deedy, King Christian was loyal to his people. King Christian didn’t like the law that everyone Jewish was forced to wear a yellow star. He was loyal to his people because he wore the yellow star even though he wasn’t Jewish and broke the law that Jews had to wear one and Christians didn’t. He showed that everyone was the same. From the book, “The Hunger Games” two of main characters Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark were elected to be in the annual “hunger games”. The “hunger games” is a competition that takes place in an arena. The point in the arena is that everyone has to kill each other. Katniss and Peeta were good friends. They both didn’t want to listen to the law that they had to kill each other. Instead of listening to the law they were loyal to each other and protected each other. Also from the story, “The Hunger Games” Katniss Everdeen was selected to be in the “Hunger Games”. She was ordered to kill the other contestants. She didn’t follow the rules and instead protected her friend Ruth. She was being loyal to her
