Continuing, Dallas Winston is another heroic character in this book. Dallas may seem like he is mean, but he really cares for others. Dallas shows this when he helped Johnny and Ponyboy after Johnny killed a Soc. Johnny and Ponyboy were in deep trouble and Dallas helped them stay out of it. Dallas gave them directions for a place to hide out, he gave them money, a gun, and Ponyboy a change of clothes to stay warm. This shows in the text when the author writes, “Dally appeared after a minute. He carefully shut the door, ‘Here’ he handed us a gun and a roll of bills” (Hinton 60). This quote shows that Dally cared for Johnny and Pony and wanted them safe. Dally loved Johnny the most and was willing to do anything to protect him. He wanted to make
For one thing, Dallas Winston is another hero in the book because he stood up for Johnny and Pony multiple times like when he told the cops that Johnny and Pony were in Texas. Dally knew he could have been in big trouble for lying to the cops, but he did this in an act of loyalty to his gang. Therefore, this is a quote that showcases his loyalty and his heroic self, “‘The fuzz wont be lookin’ for you around here,’Dally said, lighting up. They think you’ve lit out for Texas. I’ve got Buck’s T-bird parked down the road a little way.
From the start, Dallas Winston was someone who was not afraid of anything. He wasn’t afraid to do anything and everything to get what he wanted. When it comes to the church fire, Dally was not afraid to run into the burning building to save Johnny as the roof collapsed on him or put out a fire on Pony’s back to save his life. Dally was heroic by not only saving Pony and Johnny, but also took great care of Johnny while he was dying in the hospital. As shown on page 60, ”’
Dally only said some words to him and ran off. Dally only said a few words to Johnny because he feels bad for Johnny because of his home life getting abused. Dally views Johnny as his long-lost brother. In the quote, Dally says he doesn't want Johnny to get hard in jail. Dally is basically
A Long Way From Home Disclaimer: No, silly, I never have nor will I ever own The Outsiders. S.E. Hinton owns The Outsiders. *sighs* :( I simply borrow them for my own creative enjoyment purposes. Summary: "Steve never thought his life would come to this
Additionally, Darrel Curtis is another hero in the book because he works two jobs: to keep Ponyboy in school and to keep the family together in general. Furthermore, Darrel gave up his future to stay back and support his brothers through their childhood. In addition, Darrel also got rid of his Soc friends so he could support the gang. A quote to support this is on page 48 when the text states, “and Darry, getting old before his time trying to run a family and hold on to two jobs and never having any fun” (Hinton). This quote supports the claim because it tells about how Darrel is forced to take up a role as a parent because his parents have just recently died so he is Ponyboy and Sodapops legal guardian. And because of that, Darrel works two
Aidan Callan Mr. Thomas English 9, period 7 March 4th, 2024 Outside the violence. The first example of violence that was used early on in the novel. This form of violence really gives you a thought on the Soc’s and what made Johnny, Johnny. The quote states, “Johnny was lying face down on the ground.
Darry Curtis is one of the most heroic characters in the book The Outsiders because he gave his life away to support his family. Darry could’ve had the opportunity to go to college and have a successful life, but instead he wanted to take care of his younger brothers. A quote that shows this is, “He thought Darry worked too hard anyway. I did, too. Darry didn’t deserve to work like an old man when he was only twenty”(16).
Dallas doesn't want Johnny to end up like him, cold, emotionless, and heartless. Therefore, Dallas Winston proves to be an exceptional character and human being, showing us that even cold hearts have kindness inside them. The character of Dallas Winston in the novel, the Outsiders, is a true hero and an extraordinary character. Lastly, Cherry Valance is another hero in the book because she sacrifices her social life, reputation, and friends to stand up for what is right. Cherry understands the risks of doing what is right and how it can alter her personal life while saving others.
When Johnny asking about his family Dally replies, “Shoot, my old man don't give a hang whether I’m in jail or dead in a car wreck or drunk in the gutter. That don't bother me none” (Hinton 107). Similarly to Johnny, Dally does not have good life in his family either. Instead of desperately wanting love from his family members, Dally does not care about his family and his father does not care either. Ponyboy is introducing Dally by saying, “Dally had spent three years on the wild side of New York and had been arrested at the age of ten. He was tougher than the rest of us- tougher, colder, meaner” (Hinton 13). To clarify, Dally had gone through tough situations that made him tough and he was not afraid of anyone. This transformed him into a person who was hardened and had lost most of his innocence. The moment Dally died, Ponyboy said surely, “He died violent and young and desperate, just like we all knew he’d die someday” (Hinton 187). To put it in another way, Dally asked for death because he could not face the truth of Johnny’s death. Different from Johnny, Dally did not die in piece, where as this death was caused by mourning over Johnny. In conclusion, Dally’s family background had a significant impact throughout his life on his hardened personality and his perspective toward
The first person narrative book, The Outsiders, Had many interesting characters one of which was Dallas Winston. In the story of a group of hoods living in the early 60’s, Dallas or Dally for short, is the type of guy you would go to for something you're not supposed to have. Dally is one of the oldest of members of the gang and doesn't really have a place in life. He pretty much just goes around to parties and does things a criminal would do. Dally doesn't really have a father figure or in fact a family, “You think my old man gives a hang if I'm dead in a car wreck or drunk or in jail or something, he doesn't care but that doesn't bother me.”
After Johnny killed Bob, Dally helped Ponyboy and Johnny run away, as criminals, to an abandoned church in the middle of nowhere. “Dally walked us back to the door,
Although he was often caring and helpful to his friends, Dallas was an extremely selfish person to others and would put himself before anyone that wasn't in his gang. To begin, Dallas Winston also known as Dally was a very cold-hearted to any person who he did not know and was made that way when he lived on the streets of New York city before he moved. He describes to his friends how New York is a dangerous city where you could possibly mugged at any given moment and how murder is common
In chapter 6 (Pg.81), Dally got questioned from the cops about where Johnny and Pony where, Dally said they were in texas; diverging the cops. If Dally instead said where Pony and Johnny actually were the entire plot would've changed and they would of gotten in major trouble and possibly even go to jail. Furthermore Dally was a hero to the both Johnny and Pony because he was the one who gave the materials and the plan they needed to hide out and being arrested. On page 61 Johnny and Pony go to the gasoline station, where Dallas works ands asks hims for money, a plans, and maybe a Gun. Dallas then gives the boys some shirts and jackets for them to keep warm when it gets cold, then tells them to hop onto the three-fifteen freight train to windrixville, buy a week’s supply of food and stay inside until he arrives. This is very heroic of him to give supply’s, money, and instructions of what to do, back then many people wouldn't do this type of thing and would just tell them to “get lost”, but Dally did not do that and decided to help them
On page 93 it states, “Dally was standing there, and when he saw me he screamed ‘For Pete's sake, get outta there! That roof’s gonna cave in any minute. Forget about those blasted kids!’ ” (Hinton). This shows that Dally really cares about Johnny and Ponyboy because he would let kids die to help them.
One of the reasons that this book is still popular today is because of the great characters. My favourite character is Dallas Winston – a high ranking, short tempered vicious wild greaser, with a kind heart that is well hidden. A key trait in Dallas’ character is his violence:
