The Outsiders Narrative

“Fear has two meanings-forget everything and run or face everything and rise. The choice is yours”(Quotations and Quotes). Johnny Cade chose to forget everything and run, but soon realized running didn’t help him forget the past. In The Outsiders, Johnny goes through the heroic journey by the fact that he faces a harsh reality that brings him to committing an act he never thought he would, which in the end led him to becoming a hero. His story starts with tragedy and ends with it as well. The tragedy he faced, gave him strength.

Have you ever been part of a social group? Did you ever feel like an outsider? The book The Outsiders took place in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in the 1960’s. This book is about two teenage groups, the Socs and the Greasers. Both the Socs and the Greasers sometimes felt like outsiders. But which group was the real outsiders? Or, are the outsiders the people who see beyond society groups? I believe that the real outsiders are the people who see beyond society groups.

I believe the Outsiders are representation sped up by the greasers like Ponyboy, Dally, Soda, and the others. They are extracted from others and are people that don’t fit in with the crowd. The factor is they are poor and are unnoticed unless they make trouble. These are boys who don’t care they smoke and act like a family. Unlike the other gangs this has no leader and have individual leaders. Like for these examples to use Outsider it needs to be defined. Outsider or an Outsider is a man or woman or group whom doesn’t fit with the rest of the crowd and ends up sticking out like a ball in a haystack it is extractable but easier than the needle. The Outsiders begin with the story of when both Ponyboy and Johnny got jumped and attacked by the rival gang Socs. Ponyboy’s parents died in a car crash and it came down to the responsibility of his older brother Darry to sacrifice his scholarships and work in two different jobs to sustain the life of his brothers. Ponyboy and some of his friends from the gang greasers go to the nightly double and meet up with two Socs girls called Cherry and Marcia. They discuss their lifestyles but when the Greasers do a favor for them, both Ponyboy and Darry get into a fight with more than 4 socs. When Ponyboy was nearly about to die, Johnny stabs the Socs leader Bob making them run away.

In the book The Outsiders by S.E Hinton, it's built around the class division between the Socs and the greasers. The kids in the Socs came from privileged and wealthy families while the greaser grew up in a unstable and poor environment, and it shaped who they are and how they act. The novel deals with issues important to urban teens, and the obstacles that are part of their daily lives, showing realism in Hinton's writing. The Socials are the preppy rich kids who think they can run anybody they want to. The Greasers are the boys that have slicked back hair and wear white tee-shirts, they aren’t rich.
