The Outsiders
Christopher Reeve once said “A hero is an ordinary individual who finds strength to preserve and endure in spite of overwhelming overwhelming obstacles”. In my eyes a hero doesn't need a cape or superpowers to help people. All a hero needs to do is help someone up when they fall down, they don’t need to fight for the galaxy, they don’t need to save the planet from an invasion all they need to do is help others. In Fact, the dictionary definition of a hero is, “a person noted for courageous ability or character” for example, He became a local hero when he saved the drowning child. In the magnificent novel The Outsiders the plotline follows a gang in Oklahoma the “Greasers” a poor group of east siders are at odds with the “Socs” a group of wealthy west siders. The two groups attack each other in violent ways. In this novel I believe that Ponyboy Curtis and Darrel Curtis show heroic attributes.
Darrel Curtis proved in the novel The Outsiders that he has heroic attributes which therefore make him a hero. To be specific, Darry shows a caring parental role towards Ponyboy, Sodapop, and the Greaser gang. Darry stood up when both of his parents died and took their role. Darry took up two jobs to support his family. Darry was very motivated to go to college but, he didn’t due to the fact he knew he couldn’t support his family if he left. So, instead he was saving up to send Ponyboy to college this shows the hardship Darry goes too to help his family. Ponyboy describes Darry as a young man who grew up too fast and as handling things no one his age should have to. If Darry was substantially motivated to go to college and could have left his two younger brothers in a boys home, instead he stood with them together through their hard times. Darry stood up to the plate and took the responsibility of raising his two younger brothers and working two jobs to send one of them to college. As well as he actually shows compassion, and love toward his family which is a rare trait that is shown in someone in his circumstances would do. For example, when Ponyboy ran away with Johnny to the church Darry was on the search for them, he didn’t just move on like many would, he kept looking and looking and finally
Have you ever been part of a social group? Did you ever feel like an outsider? The book The Outsiders took place in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in the 1960’s. This book is about two teenage groups, the Socs and the Greasers. Both the Socs and the Greasers sometimes felt like outsiders. But which group was the real outsiders? Or, are the outsiders the people who see beyond society groups? I believe that the real outsiders are the people who see beyond society groups.
Darry Curtis is one of the most heroic characters in the book The Outsiders because he gave his life away to support his family. Darry could’ve had the opportunity to go to college and have a successful life, but instead he wanted to take care of his younger brothers. A quote that shows this is, “He thought Darry worked too hard anyway. I did, too. Darry didn’t deserve to work like an old man when he was only twenty”(16).
The Outsiders message is about “Nothing Gold Can Stay.” It explains that nothing good can go on forever and nothing young can last forever. It tells you about how and why we should enjoy what we have and keep and cherish everything we have to its maximum limit. Why shouldn’t we cherish what we have? Why do we need more? Why can't we be equally treated with same amount of things such as money and houses? That is the real question. We have that to this very day. In The Outsiders, their lives are exactly like this. They have their awesome rich people lives and the poor have unhappy lives. Some of each gang just want to be normal, the same, or similar at least. But their money splits them up. All because of a little extra
A Hero’s Journey: The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton brings to life many notable characters who will long be remembered. The story is centered around the Curtis brothers: Darry, Sodapop, and protagonist Ponyboy. Other members of their greaser gang, such as Dallas Winston, Two-bit Matthews, and Steve Randall, also played a role in bringing the story to life. However, no character stands out more than the “gang’s pet” Johnny Cade. In the novel, Johnny undergoes a compelling transformation from a victim to a hero, evident in his standing up to Dally, defense of his friend by killing Bob, and the courageous rescue of helpless children from a burning church.
Additionally, the character, Darrel Curtis, can be considered a hero because he cared deeply for his brothers, sacrificing his future
Darrel “Darry” Curtis was a 20 year old boy who took responsibility and parented his brothers while keeping two jobs. In the book The Outsiders by S.E Hinton, Darry was a grown up boy, smart and brawn, who was the leader of a gang called the Greasers and was a guardian for his brothers. Darry took this role as a guardian or father of his brothers Sodapop and Ponyboy Curtis after the death of their parents. The Greasers were in a heated rivalry with another gang called the Socs. Darry took responsibility for his family and gang members while working two jobs. Through the ups and downs Darry protected his brothers. Darry, as a 20 year old boy, had enough responsibility to parent his
Darry can be described as responsible for many reasons. Darry was a hard worker; he had to support himself and two other teenage boys. A quote from the novel, Ponyboy states, “Darry didn’t deserve to work like an old man when he was only twenty” (Hinton 16). He worked hard all day just to put food on the table and a roof over their heads. Darry wants Ponyboy to exceed excellence in life. He often yells at him because he cares and wants to make sure he has the best future he could possibly get. Ponyboy says, “I never could please him. He would have hollered at me for carrying a blade if I had carried one. If I brought home B’s he was A’s. If I had A’s, he wanted to make sure they stayed A’s. If I was playing football, I should be in studying, and if I was reading, I should be out playing football” (Hinton

Define heroic. What do you think the word heroic means. The word heroic means: a person that has the characteristics of a hero or heroine; very brave. But, some people are heroic in different ways. Like the character Ponyboy from the book “The Outsiders”. Ponyboy was heroic when, he came home to meet Darry and Sodapop, when he talks to Cherry for the first time, and when he stuck with Johnny in the worst of times. The Outsiders is a book that stars in the 1950’s when there was lots of problems. Ponyboy Curtis is a 14-year-old boy whose world has been turned upside down. His parents were killed in an automobile accident just eight months before The Outsiders story takes place in. He lives with his older brother, Darry, who is 20 years old and has legal custody of him and his other brother, Sodapop, who is 16 and dropped out of school.
The Outsiders, by S.E Hinton, is a novel which tells the story of two rival gangs from Oklahoma in 1965. The rivalry is between Greasers who are much poorer than their counterparts from the west-side, the Socials. Ponyboy Curtis is the narrator of this story, and it is through his eyes that the events unfold. In this classic, there three characters who stood out from the rest: Darry Curtis, Dally Whinston and of course, Johnny Cade. But, are they heroes? To answer this question, one must first know what a hero is. In my opinion, a hero is a person who, in the face of danger, adversity or from a position of weakness, display courage and self-sacrifice for the greater good.
No matter who you are, you can be a hero. In the novel “The Outsiders” by S.E. Hinton, the book takes place in the 1960’s. There are two different groups of people where they live, the Socs, which are rich, spoiled teenagers from good families that also like to jump Greasers for fun. The other group are Greasers. They are the hoods, they are all brother like, they have greasy hair and not great home life.
The Outsiders movie which was released on March 25, 1983, is a American drama film directed by Francis Ford Coppola .It is a crime thriller and is adapted from a novel of the same name by S.E. Hinton .The Film was shot on location in Tulsa, Oklahoma and set in 1965 .The story of this movie revolves around the conflict between the two different social groups ,which is the rich and the poor. It is a class versus class conflict which gives rise to a physical conflict between the Greasers and the Socs .I feel there are physical fights throughout the story between the two groups due to enculturation. The native culture that is transmitted from one generation to another among the Greasers is the reason for their limitations.
The title of the story is The Outsiders. S.E. Hinton wrote it. Dell Publishing published the book. The main characters include Ponyboy, Darry, Soadapop, Dally Winston, Johnny, Cherry, Two-Bit, and Marcia.
The Outsiders, a novel by S.E. Hinton, shares moralities that encourage themes of brotherhood and heroism with literary elements - which includes setting, point of view, characterization, conflict, plot, and theme. Each element influences the big idea of flawed heroes and friendships to readers. With her powerful novel, Hinton is able to express the necessity of unity and brotherhood within a community, despite differences in classes, ages, or ideals.
Who do you think is a hero or has shown heroism through their life. In The Outsiders, Ponyboy’s interests and behavior contrasts his gang. For example, he hates to fight unless he has to, unlike his friends who fight for the fun of it or because everyone is doing it. Though he is the oddball of the group he still displayed great heroism throughout the book. In S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders, Ponyboy displays many heroic traits and is a risk-taker. He shows great courage, his personality, and his actions are respected by many people.
