Our olfactory system allows us to detect chemical in the air that begin to dissolve once they are inhaled through our nose and processed through our limbic system. What is fascinating for such a matter of fact sense, is memory. Through our sense of smell, exists a powerful gateway to past experiences. A particular smell can trigger an immediate recall of situations that are within the deepest reaches of our memory. Smell is a worthwhile sense to command. Since we know if its ability to connect us emotionally through memory, therapeutics is worth exploring. Aromatherapy is the careful use of scented oils to relax the senses. The practical implications of aromatherapy are that the olfactory system triggers an endocrine and hormonal response via the hypothalamus. This regulatory exercise, while quite natural can be stimulated by synthetic scents, which have been shown to register physiological and psychological benefits. Many concentrated oils come from natural plants and have application for daily relaxation or mediation all the way to chemotherapy or child birth.
We tend to appreachiate order in our surroundings. The air we breath deserves a certain order and although it can be taken for granted, we known when air quality is less than desirable. At best, poor air quality distracts us from what needs concentration. It can be irritating to the point of being an annoyance which is mildly stressful. However, pollutnats can be suspending in the air to an extent where
Smells connection to emotion was also discussed, it turned out to be molecules with receptor signals capable of triggering memory through the olfactory part of our brain and the hippocampus, the site of memory
1. Neurons is a basic building block of the nervous system. The sensory nerves carry the message from body tissues to the brain and spinal chord to be processed. The motor neurons are then used to send instructions to the body tissue from the brain and spinal cord. Dendrites, which are connected to the body cell (soma) receive information and pass it through the axon. Myelin sheath covers the axon and helps speed the process. When triggered by a signals from our senses or other neurons, the neuron fires an impulse called the action potential. The resting potential is the neuron’s visual charge of positive
The nervous system uses sensory receptors, nerves and your brain to control your cells, and acts quickly. The endocrine system uses your circulatory system and hormones to care for your cells and acts more slowly. The reproductive system and endocrine systems use hormones to function. The nervous and endocrine systems are connected by sending information to the hypothalamus and uses the autonomic nervous system to transmit what activity needs to take place in the body. This activity might be what hormones are needed, or what sensations the body feels. While the nervous and endocrine systems send information to the hypothalamus, the reproductive system receives information from the hypothalamus. So all three systems do work together, although
The comments regarded aromatherapy being implemented into healthcare. One regarded the potential for other patient sensitivity to essential oils. Another individual stated in the comments that this would work in the OR setting. Another individual stated that it would be worth trying in their department. Lastly, an individual stated that they are glad to see this therapeutic treatment making its way into mainstream medicine. Overall, we felt that the presentation went well, we felt prepared for additional questions. The staff’s positive attitudes towards essential oils allowed for engaging
In 2010, Darek Fidyka had stabbed eighteen times in the back, with three of the stabs puncturing his lung, by his former friend, Jaroslaw, during a drunken rage. Jaroslaw had felt that Darek had started a relationship with his wife while they were still married. His injury resulted in him being paralyzed from the chest down.
Smell is one of the five basic human senses. Smell is a powerful sense with many abilities. Smell can alert people to potential dangers. Smell brings variety into the world. In addition to these, smell also has one very special ability. Smell can instantly draw memories out of a person.
Definition. Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils to help the mind, body, and soul. It has physiological, emotional, spiritual, and psychological properties
The sense of smell is a powerful tool that humans have at their disposal. It can have an impact on one's psychological system. When smell enters the scene receptors in the nose, the signal is sent to the olfactory cortex and some parts of the limbic system. The limbic system is responsible for emotions, so it is possible that the sense of smell can have an impact on one's mental make-up. Aromatherapy can be used to treat patients with depression and anxiety using odors. However, studies involving aromatherapy are limited and these claims are not fully solidified. A study to see if aromatherapy is effective in treating depression would be a case study. Case studies provide more information over a longer period, which will allow for the patient
The first group was from ages 24 to 66 years old without hypothyroidism or any smelling problems. The second group was comprised of people ages 21 to 71 with hypothyroidism. All subjects went through a subjective smell awareness test that included mint and anise and objective olfactory test. In each subject symptoms of hypothyroidism were tested. The results were average of 85% of the cases. Furthermore the differences were in the objective test. MacKay-sims and Beard last thoughts was reportedly of cortex’s ability to irritate of olfactory nerves gives chances for use in clinical practice.
Aromatherapists often using methods of inhalation to provide physiological or psychological effect, an example being lavender, which can be used to calm the mind, if the lavender essential oil being used is tainted, we cannot know how that will affect the body or mind (Essential, 2015). When an essential oil is adulterated the chemical make up is unknown to the consumer, and when it is unknown is when it can do the most harm. If lavender is being used, it could do the opposite of what it is being used for, it could make someone more sleepless and or it could cause other problems within their body. Potential interference of adulterants with components of the natural oil; this may affect synergy and the expected physiological and psychophysiological activities of the oil (Shutes, Quality). When it is unknown to what is in an essential oil that has been adulterated, it can cause many problems, mentally, physically, and

The truth is, essential oils may get a bad reputation in some cases; however, they really can change the lives of people tremendously, more than society thinks. Essential oils are one of nature's best kept secrets. These products are non-toxic to the body and are said to help the mind, as well as moods and emotions of people in many different ways. On this topic, there is always big discussion on whether or not they actually work and truly benefit people in any way. Some people “believe” in these unique eco-friendly oils, while others do not. So the real question is, do essential oils live up to their full potential as they are described? Do they really benefit people? Indeed they do, and it turns out they improve
The endocrine and nervous system are two control systems of the human body that are interconnected with each other. The nervous system can be described as fast-acting with short-term effects, while the endocrine system is slower-acting with longer lasting effects. The hypothalamic-pituitary axis is one example of a connection between the two systems where neurons can signal the release of hormones from specific endocrine glands.
“Stop and smell the roses” is a famous idiomatic reference many make when they want to convey the importance of appreciating the beauty of life. But have any of us imagined what it may be like to NOT smell the roses or anything for that matter? Humans often take their sense of smell for granted, as they rely more heavily on sight and sound in day-to-day activities. Yet smell-in my opinion- can be such an important aspect of life as the brain has the capability to associate smells with danger and it can even elicit memories. For example, the odor of smoke notifies us that something dangerous could be happening, or walking into a bakery with the smell of fresh chocolate chip cookies can cause pleasure, bringing back childhood memories
Based on the observations of the sensations of activity, alertness, appetite, sleepiness anger and fear, I am able to make an overall conclusions to my body’s Endocrine system. For instance, over the past day I have noticed that my appetite is highest around 6 am compared to the rest of the day. This observation may suggest that my hunger hormones are expressed greater at this time than later on in the day. Additionally, I have observed that my level of alertness was at first low and then grew as the day went on. This may suggest that my alertness hormones act relatively to time of day and my activity levels. As my activity levels increased, so did my alertence. With this in consideration, It would suggest that hormones work to a particular response of an individual’s own body.
