Mark Twain's short story, "The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County," is a shockingly accurate and vivid depiction of addiction on the Western frontier. Mark Twain creates this vivid depiction by describing the worn-down town, the old men in the bar, and the rampant gambling to pass the time, (Twain 83). This story captures the struggles of Western men with no future after the Gold Rush ended and how they wasted their days on addictions like gambling and drinking. The main protagonist, Jim Smiley, is addicted to gambling on practically everything. The story takes place in an old mining camp in California. He did nothing but teach the frog to jump and catch flies for three months straight. The frog is given human characteristics being described as, A frog so modest and straightforward as he was, for all he was so gifted, (Twain 85). The frog was especially talented at jumping. One day a stranger asked about the frog and bet that the frog wasn't special so Smiley offered to find him a frog if he bet on it. The stranger took the bet and when both frogs jumped, Smiley's frog couldn't even get off the ground, losing him the bet. Smiley learned that the man had fed the frog shot. This shows how Smiley has a severe gambling addiction and his cheating opponent illustrates the downside of betting. Gambling is a game where you will eventually lose because the game is usually rigged from the start. The story about Smiley ends there, but one can easily assume he bet right afterwards. Addiction is a mental illness when someone can't resist something. The most common addictions are related to alcohol or drugs. Coming in close behind would be gambling. Gamblers tend to have “diminished cognitive control and increased impulsivity,”
